PTR-Cheating on Mickey w/Harry!...OMG! Only a month to go!

What restaurant did you get the sushi from? I'm more of a raw fish chick than a rolls chick, like you.

We actually got the sushi from Whole Foods, they had a lot of different options in the raw area, but I don't do Salmon or Yellowtail, just never liked them. Everything else is cooked, I like to get mine at Sushi bars, cause I tend to like the scallops, and some of the other more unique stuff, but this was still good!

So another REAL trip update! While I was gone over the weekend, my DME documents arrived in the mail! I have two different trips scheduled since we're staying at OKW the first night and then switching to BLT. Either way it's so nice to have those luggage tags. It's hard to believe the trip is less than a month away, and it will fly by with the DC trip only days away!

So on Saturday night we had plans to visit my mother’s friend’s house. He has recently remodeled his kitchen and back yard with a Koi pond and evidently a stellar kitchen remodel. Unfortunately he was not feeling up to visitors, so our Saturday night plans were changed. It worked out OK because we had lots of leftover food from the night before and plenty of other food that we could work out dinner. For Sunday we had planned to make Rib Eye steaks, so we moved that dinner up one night and decided to start of the evening with some of the leftover sushi and sake.

Next we cooked up some Rib Eye steaks, I toasted the remainder of the baguette for the cheese with some garlic and butter. We sautéed up some Japanese style vegetables with crushed red pepper, soy, sake and peanut sauce. We put out some of those pesky Aloha fruit rolls, but they paled in comparison to the other offerings.

We enjoyed some very nice wines with the Steak, a Beaulieu Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon, I forget the year, but probably somewhere around 93-94 and an 2000 Opus One. Both wines were very different and both tasty. The BV was a little more tannin, while the Opus was more fruity, however there was not enough Cabernet in it to call it a Cabernet, hence the name Opus One. Regardless it was good.

So our accommodations are always quite well appointed which is why I always enjoy going to visit the folks. In addition to the great food and wine we always have, the accommodations are very nice. This is the tub in the bathroom in our “wing” of the house.

And here is the living room

The food pics are making me so hungry right now. I just came home from work and now I'm having a craving for Outback.

I was one of the lucky few that scored Discovery Cove tickets for $175 total per person on Tues, that was a nice $275 savings.:woohoo:

I saw that post about savings at Discovery Cove and Seaworld. We put off Discovery Cove until our trip next May. Fran thinks it won't be warm enough to swim in October! :lmao: :lmao: You learn to pick your battles!

I want to hear all about it!

I figured for that price I'll take my chances on the weather and I'll let you know if it's worth it. Hopefully we don't freeze and we're not too tired from the MNSSHP the night before.

So it looks like we'll fly into Orlando on Halloween, do the MNSSHP on Nov 1st and Discovery Cove on Nov 2nd, then it will be off on the Dream for a week.:thumbsup2

So three days from now, I should be safely landed in Virginia with my luggage picked up from the Baggage Carousel, and waiting in line for a Taxi to our hotel in Downtown DC. I have had a request for our itinerary so that others can follow along vicariously. As I stated on another forum as we only have three ADRs and still no tour reservations :headache: these plans are more a guideline. And not part of the pirate code. :rotfl2:

Itinerary

Tuesday, April 19, 2011
9:25AM flight out of LAX on American Airlines, this means we need to be at the airport by 7AM maybe even 6:30 so I have time to drop Fran off at the curb with our luggage scooters, and then go park the car! :scared1:
Arrive Dulles around 5:20PM, catch an accessible taxi to our Downtown Hotel, I estimate two hours.
There is a Whole Foods less than a mile away, other than that the closest restaurants are all very ethnic and probably more than we are up for after a long day of flying. There’s not even a fast food restaurant within a mile of our hotel, so Whole Foods or CVS is it for dinner for us!

Wednesday, April 20, 2011
Our hotel has a complimentary breakfast. so we’ll hit that between 6 & 9 AM. Our plan is to visit a Smithsonian Museum, and based on my analysis of the exhibits and our ratings (don’t ask, it’s way too OCD over the top! :lmao:), the Museum of American History wins for the first day. That means Julia Childs Kitchen, the lunch box exhibit and many other interesting things.
Hopefully we’ll take a night city tour, but since we haven’t booked it yet, I doubt it will happen, we may just retire to the room and call tour companies to book one for later in the trip.

Thursday, April 21, 2011
This was the day that we planned to take a city tour for the day, but we have not booked it. All the guide books say that if you need an accessible tour, you need to book it days in advance. Technically we have a few more days, but time is running out, so maybe we’ll end up at a Smithsonian again. The next one up is the Natural History Museum, but perhaps there is still time to book the city tour, cool.
This is the night that we have an ADR at Kinkeads. This is one of the top seafood restaurants in DC, I’ve read countless reviews of the place and though it is pricey, everyone has said it is worth the price. I’m looking forward to this dinner.

Friday, April 22, 2011
Again we plan this day to visit one of the Smithsonian Museums, possibly the American Indian Museum as it has less galleries than most of the others. You see today we are picking up our rental car at 3PM in preparation for the remainder of our trip. Once we get the rental car we plan on visiting the Spy Museum. It is open much later than many of the others so we plan to stay until 9PM when they close. I have made a reservation at a Brazilian Steakhouse (Churrascaria) Fogo de Chao for 9:30PM as it is only a few blocks from the Spy Museum. After a late night, we’ll head back to the room and pack up for transfer the next morning.

Saturday, April 23, 2011
This day we will transfer hotels. We will move from Downtown DC to Alexandria, VA. I am hoping that the pace will be a little slower out in the burbs. I know that a Downtown hotel will drive me nuts after a few days, and I will relish a hotel with free self parking. The ability to come and go with our own car will be much more comfortable than a hotel where we are dependent on public transportation and cabs.

We actually have no plans for this day, other than we need to hit a supermarket because we will be cooking in the room a couple nights while in Alexandria. I’m sure Fran will come up with some ideas of what to do!

Sunday, April 24, 2011
This is Easter Sunday and we are hoping that most people will be in church, at brunch or planning for Easter Supper. Instead we plan on visiting one of the Smithsonian Museums. This time perhaps the Museum of Natural History, where they have the Hope Diamond on display, and we’re also interested in the fossils and dinosaurs. After the museum we’ll go back to our hotel, do some laundry and make spaghetti for dinner.

Monday, April 25, 2011
Writing up this itinerary has caused me to rethink our plans, and I have moved Monday’s activity to Tuesday. As a result the majority of this day is free. Our only obligation is dinner at Gadsby’s Tavern, a place where many famous people have dined including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison & James Monroe. The building was built in the late 1700’s and while it has not been in continuous operation (the Union Oyster House in Boston bears that distinction of continuous operation since 1826, and we have also eaten there), the restaurant and museum are kept in business through a lease to modern restaurant entrepreneurs. It serves a Continental Menu with some Traditional Tavern Favorites.

Tuesday, April 26, 2011
We’ll get an early start this morning because we plan to drive to Fredericksburg (about 45 miles south) to visit the Old Town, Museums and Battlefield. This was a significant battle as it was one of the most one-sided conflicts of the Civil War. The North suffered twice as many casualties as the South due to delays in the arrival of the pontoon bridges, thus allowing the South to further entrench themselves and defend against the North. This will be an all day trip and we’ll probably catch our meals as we can either fixing dinner in the room when we get home, or if we’re starving hit a drive through. :rotfl2:

Travel home day. Always bittersweet on vacation, on the one hand we miss our kitties and want to go home, but also enjoy sightseeing and our travels. Check out is at noon, but our plane doesn’t leave until 6:20PM so we have until around 3PM before we need to head to the airport. Who knows leisurely lunch, shopping…

That’s it, anyone with any suggestions or has any more information, let me know!
Thanks!

We'll have been in Orlando for almost a week when you get there. On Halloween is when we switch from BCV to VWL. We're still debating MNSSHP, I guess we'll decide when the tickets go on sale. What resort are you staying at again?

The Dream sounds so cool. We need to take a couple cruises on some other Disney ships first and build up our standing so that we have some good choices when we make our Ressies, I don't want to be stuck with slim pickings for Remy and Palo and the excursions when we go on that ship!

We'll be at AKV Kidani for the 3 nights. We'll have the nieces so I'm thinking we'll skip Palo and Remy this time.

I knew you were traveling with young children, but I don't see that we ever will. We have none, and we CERTAINLY will not be taking my nephews anywhere (one has a behavioral disorder and the other is still way too young). My sister and her daughter maybe, but only to DVC resorts. Anything paid like a cruise will be just the two of us, I can't wait to finally try Remy and revisit Palo, it was 10 years ago the last time we did a cruise! :scared1:

AKV is nice, hopefully we'll be back there in a little over a year.

Since my Mom passed away years ago I'm sort of a combo Aunt/Grandma to my youngest sister's three kids. Each niece/nephew gets to plan their own special vacation when they turn six and this niece picked the cruise over WDW. My sister helps with some of the costs like airfare and excursions/tickets and we do the rest. Let's hope by the time the youngest one turns six I'm still up to chasing them.

My sister and her husband sent a clear message to the family when they moved to Washington State (her husband will not get on an airplane EVER) that they were not interested in keeping up family ties. My parents go up and visit at either Thanksgiving or Christmas and me and my DP get them for the other holiday each year. We try to alternate who visits who, but for a while there Fran couldn't travel becuase of her joint problems.

I envy all the folks who have large extended families and take the whole gang to Disney on their DVC points. We would be happy to do that, but no one is really interested. My parents went in Jan 2010 and while my Dad is interested in going back, my mom flat out said last weekend, "Not for a while." So we'll be taking our friends who love Disney instead. (((Sigh)))

You're lucky to be able to enjoy these trips with your nieces. I'm glad THEY have their priorities straight!

You and Fran can adopt me and mine ANYDAY!

It's true we can't pick our family, but we sure can have great friends. I'm sure your friends will appreciate it too!

Don't worry we have our share of dysfunctional family too.:rotfl:

Enjoy your trip next week, it sounds like a good one.

I think I would like to get back to DC now. I'm sure you will have a great time there. Look forward to the pictures.

You can adopt Stephanie and me too! :goodvibes

Just popping in to say hi and drool over your food pics. Sake tasting sounds like so much fun! The sushi looks amazing. I ended up staying home all weekend with double pink eye. Gross, I know, and I was afraid to leave the house and give it to anyone else.

Do you have other plans for DC besides the museums? Are you going to get your picture taken in front of the White House and (st)roll by the the reflecting pool? Hopefully you will get a tour booked and they will take you to do these things. Any chance of hearing one of the military bands?

Hope you are doing well and that your house project is complete before you leave for DC. Have a fabulous trip!

Wouldn't that be one big happy amusing family! :rotfl2:

Thanks, the sad part is that this is the least dysfunctional part of the family. The in-laws (who I'm sure are not resting in peace) were the crazy ones!

Welcome! Hopefully I'll save some good pictures to share!:thumbsup2

So I have some good news! Today we booked our night tour for Wednesday evening and city day tour for Thursday at 10AM. It's one of those tours with multiple stops and normal people can just purchase a ticket, and get on and off at the various stops. However since we need an accessible bus, it needs to be booked in advance. Because we're on the plane all day tomorrow, today was our last chance to book and we did!

The tour stops at all the major Mall stops, The Capitol, Union Station, a few Smithsonian Museums, the White House, the Vietnam, Lincoln, FDR and Jefferson Memorials, and the Holocaust Museum and Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This will definitely be a full day!
