Is there any penalty for canceling PS's like the day of the reservation if you change your mind?

Unless it is a PS that required payment in advance (someone correct me if I'm wrong) like the dinner shows, there is no penalty.

If you simply don't show up they will just move on to the next party on the list. However, calling to cancel is probably the polite thing to do so it can open up a PS for another party.

I can confirm the first point, and strongly agree with the second.

Me too...I finally got my PS'S just as I really wanted them, through many
calls, switching, etc. And as soon as I secured my desired ps, I canceled
my "back up" in the same phone call...apparently, not everyone does this
cuz I would say, "please cancel my PS for this restaurant and the same date,
and make it available to another family. the CM's always said not everyone
does this. Let's all help each other to get our dream disney vacations!
