PSA - please give up your seat if someone needs it more

People fly for all sorts of reasons, and have to book at all sorts of times prior to the flight. Have you not met poor people before? Those people fly too. Maybe not as often, but they might have a family reason to have to travel as well. Those folks shouldn’t have to leave their kids next to a stranger just because they can’t afford to shell out additional dollars to sit with their kids. And yes, there are good reasons 8 year olds shouldn’t have to sit next to strangers without supervision, as predators definitely exist.

I see this each time we fly to MCO. Those poor people you refer to. Poor people with their matching shirts, Mickey ears, Star Wars Suitcases drinking their Starbucks and eating their Chick-fil-a while waiting at their gate with their family and then getting on the plane and hoping people will move for them so their family of 7 can sit together.

Is it always the case? No. What you are making a huge deal out of is rare. It cost much less to drive...a "poor person" would pay $400 in gas before paying $1600 in airfare. If it were an emergency that required flying, a person with limited means would most likely go it alone instead of schlepping a whole family behind them. We need to stay grounded in reality and not slap a blanket excuse on entitlement. Not everybody gets a trophy.

I thought this thread was about giving up a seat on a Disney bus???? Giving up a "free" seat on a Disney bus as opposed to giving up a seat you paid for on an airplane is apples and oranges!! As someone said above it doesn't cost anything to be kind!!

I've seen many threads go off topic over the years but this one went completely off the rails!!! I'm puzzled to why it hasn't been closed down. Seems like the dead horse has been kicked sufficiently.

Heh. If every thread that goes off topic got shut down, the board would be VERY quiet. lol. Same with repeated questions. At least the "off topic" was still transportation related.

Wow. So. Generally giving up a seat on a random Disney bus is definitely a nice voluntary, selfless, independent of all regulations way of pixie dusting someone who arrived for said bus and decided to board rather than await the next bus that will arrive less full if the current bus was standing room only. The potential standee people can opt to board the crowded bus or wait until the next bus. If toddlers/infants or impatients are waiting, they can remain seated or sit on ground/bench, if so inclined grab a coffee or drink or find hidden mickeys. Important note: another bus will come. Everyone is pretty much in the same boat (or bus) at the end of the day. Choosing to board a crowded standing room only bus is at your own risk, free will, choice, decision, peril.

On an airplane, train, or other reserved seating venue -- dude... I paid to sit in a specific seat so I wouldn't have to deal with free sitters. I took my time examining the seating choices and paid for such a gift. You may not take my seat. Likewise, I may refuse to give up my seat to you if I reserved, paid, picked or otherwise chose my seat.

Unless specifically directed by a bus driver on Disney busses, I prefer to remain on my ECV to not take more space away than is necessary from others.

My children would of gotten up in a second. I have always taught them to offer their bus seat to someone more in need of it, then them. It's a good message to teach children I think and teaches them compassion.

If the lady with the baby boarded when the bus was almost full, only a handful of people could offer up their seat. The rest of the bus couldn't get to her to give up a seat.

I do offer up my seat when I am able. But yes, I do think that if you board the bus knowing that you shouldn't be standing, that is on you. It is a bad decision. You are the one putting you safety (and that of those around you) at risk. What would happen if the bus had to suddenly brake, and you lost balance and knocked into someone else? You could be hurt. The child you might be holding could be hurt. Someone near you could be hurt. If you are in a hurry to get to your resort there are other, safer ways than getting on a standing room only bus when you shouldn't be standing. And then blaming others for not being nice to you.

Yes. Why aren’t children under a certain age automatically seated with parents or guardians? It’s a safety risk.

So would having older people sit without a relative to help them. Where do you draw the lines and decide which group needs help?

I also want to comment on the poster who hoped people were more kind to the elderly and offered them seats. My last trip that I took my dad along he was getting to where it was challenging for him to do the walking, and would have been hard for him to stand on a bus. I took responsibility for him (and didn't expect others to do so) and #1 booked a boardwalk area resort where we avoided 2 of the buses to the parks and #2 paid for a taxi for two when we didn't want to deal with Disney transportation.

My family member, my responsibility. NO WAY would I have put him on a bus expecting someone to stand for him.

I think bottom line is that making decisions about things is our own responsibility and in the bus example boarding the bus is the beginning of it all. Choosing to board a full bus is boarding a full bus. That responsibility doesn't transfer to others to fix your consideration of no seating
