Had lunch with a girlfriend, she lost her diamond off her engagement ring. She's been married for 19 years so the ring is that old. She has no idea when or where it happened, but the diamond (with prongs) just broke off completely.

So have that setting check from time to time..

Always do! There is a Fast Fix in the mall that does it - while you wait if you catch them at a non-busy time.

:)

Poor thing! Even though it is not the same thing, I hope she had insurance.

I lost my diamond once. I was driving back from a shopping trip and ran my hand through my hair and "felt" the hair going through the ring. I felt it (it was dark) and could tell the diamond was gone! I have no idea how I stayed on the road. I got home and THANKFULLY the diamond was in the bottom of the trunk. It had gotten pried off by a big box. I promptly took it to a jeweler and had it replaced with a 6 prong holder.

Great PSA - thanks for sharing!

Awww, she must be heartbroken. :(

I had my prongs replaced a couple years ago on my engagement ring. It's a high H setting, so it gets bumped a lot.

I almost lost mine because of my wedding band. It was rubbing against the prongs. Luckily my mom's buddy is a master jeweler. Sent it to her, she changed my setting from a four to a six and secured my wedding band.

mine broke also. The prongs broke at the ring level. Lucky for me I was able to find it.

great reminder. I lost one of my diamonds out of my ring. Thank goodness it wasnt the big diamond but none the less I now have to replace the small diamond on my ring. And I miss wearing it.

Last year 3 days before our summer trip to WDW, I noticed one of my prongs was broken. We have always had insurance, as it's a costly ring, so we would have been covered, but it's not the same thing, that's for sure. I get my channel set anniversary ring and engagement ring checked and cleaned at the jeweler on a regular schedule.

Needless to say, the ring went into the jeweler and I got it remade into white gold, with an awesome channel setting. Much lower setting, so that protects the ring.

Hope OP's friend had insurance, Tiger

I get my prongs checked every couple of years - I have had them repaired and replaced about 4 times in the last 25 years. My setting has 6 prongs on the main stone, even if one breaks the stone is not going anywhere.

The jewelry store I bought my wife engagement ring from (30 years ago:scared1:) wants you in every 6 months for a free inspection. If you do, they will replace the diamond for free if it falls out. We've had the prongs rebuilt twice. That cost $50 each time.

my ring get inspected at the jewellery store every 6 months and if they need any repairs or lose and stones they are 100% covered thank goodness.

My engagement ring was orginally my grandmother's diamond in it's original setting (from the mid-1940s). We had the ring sized, inspected, and took out an insurance policy on the stone. After about three years, I could hear this clanking sound when I would move my hand. It turns out the prongs (only a four-prong setting) were weak, and the stone was actually SPINNING in the setting. Needless to say I got a whole new band with a six-prong setting. Even if the stone is insured, there would be no replacing my grandmother's ring.

Gosh I wish I had thought about this! It is just something that never crossed my mind....and I did lose my diamond from my engagement ring a few years ago. Had worn it for over 25 years, and it never occurred to me to have the prongs rebuilt or even checked. How stupid was that?! I had just recently replaced my plain wedding band with a diamond surround, now that's useless. I know where I lost it--in the Patriot Center at George Mason University--talk about a needle in a haystack! :rotfl:

I haven't replaced it yet because I can't bring myself to spend the money with kids in college. Maybe someday later. Now I wear my mom's 25th anniversary diamond band but I really miss my ring! I try to remember that it's just a "thing"....

Good reminder to have those prongs checked!!
