Just a note to anyone with pets that take the evacuation route up to Hattiesburg, there is a shelter here that will take pets and even has places for horses (and I would assume other farm type animals). Its the Forrest County Multi-Purpose Building on Highway 49. They also have an area for campers.

Wow this is so great to know! I will buy more water and a pet first aid kit. I wonder what to do when places (shelters or hotels) won't take more than 2 pets? I'd never be able to leave one behind.

FYI: All La Quintas take pets and they are not high cost.

Yup - technically he's an "early generation" bengal -only 3 generations from the Asian Leopard Cat (whereas a registered bengal must be 4). We later adopted his great-grandma, a retired breeder. Incredibly sociable, entertaining critters - more like dogs than cats. Love 'em to death!

I know everyone on the Gulf Coast is focused on the oil disaster right now, but don't forget that hurricane season starts in one week. Let's hope for a quiet season, but be prepared, just in case.

I'm surprised at how much has turned around when it comes to pets.

Even though Katrina did the most damage that year. South Florida had quite a bit of damage from Katrina, Wilma, and Rita (I think it was those three that year). And by Wilma, there were a lot more on pet evacuation areas. And more every year since.

Yes, there was a lot of backlash from the pet situation during Katrina. People were told that someone would be back for the pets, and no one was ever sent. People who refused to leave without their pets were threatened to have their pets shot. I've heard too many grusome stories from the vets that came back to share here, but it should be much easier to leave and find shelter with your pets now.
