Easter Lillies are very, very poisonous (at least for cats).

We found this out a few years ago when our dear kitten, Cinderella, chewed on one little leaf. Four days later she was gone.

:guilty:

Everyone talks about poinsettias (are they poisonous? aren't they? who knows?), but few people seem to know about this.

Just a public service announcement.

Thanks for posting. Exactly the reason why we don't have any plants inside because my cats eat everything!! They wouldn't stay away from anything green.

Most lilies and even daylilies (which are a different plant altogether) are poisonous for cats. My cats have eaten easter lilies before and just thrown up and been fine. I'm not saying this is normal but that's been my experience and they've done it several times over the years. :confused3

I just looked it up and about 3/4 of the things in my garden are poisonous to cats (I have outside cats). :flower3:

I also had a dog that ate three chocolate bars with no ill effects.

Also, chocolate is just as bad for cats as it is for dogs. Cats, however, usually don't like the smell of it and just don't eat it but if it's in something they might like, such as milk or ice cream, it can be deadly.

Lillies are one of my favorite flowers but because of my kitties I can't have them. Thanks for posting the info for those who didn't know :thumbsup2

I had no idea.

Sorry that your kitty had to pay the price.

We have never bought them, but with lots of kitties--that is very valuable information. I had never heard of that.

My kitties and I thank you for posting this PSA.

Yes, they are poisonous, as are lily of the valley, foxglove and any number of other plants.

I'm sorry, but with pets or children, it is the owner/parent's responsibility to find out prior to bringing something home whether or not it's going to be a hazard.

I totally agree. Someone stopped by with it as a gift, and we only had it for less than a day before I saw something on the news about it being poisonous, so I took it outside immediately. As I walked back into the house, DD13 told me Cinderella had started throwing up (sorry if tmi!). I was just a few minutes too late. I've felt guilty about that since.

Over the next few days her kidneys shut down, and we tried everything until the vet finally told us it was hopeless.

I did not know that...also, here are some other common plants that are toxic to cats:

(from the CFA website...too many to list all of them)

Aloe Vera
Azalea
Black Eyed susan
Chrysanthemum (mums)
Daffodil
Elephant Ears
Ferns (most)
Geranium
Honeysuckle
marigold
Morning glory
Schefflera

And there are lots more...these are just the common ones...

I had no idea...and I have 2 house cats...

Same here. If it's green (or inappropriate in general, e.g. Easter grass, plastic bags), my cat's all over it. I can't even have artificial plants in my house.

Poinsettias are midly poisonous (at least to humans)

It would take quite a few bracts (the brightly colored leaves) to inflict any ill effects in a human (even a child). In animals it might not take as many. Long story short, if you have them, keep them out of reach.

Acorns are also poisonous...my dogs love chewing on them (they must like the crunch? :confused3) and we have them ALL over the yard since we have a few very large oak trees. We pick them out of their mouths all year long!

Thanks for posting, I had no idea.

Cheeto is a nightmare for eating flowers - we try not to have them in the house, but if someone sends us flowers or something we put them in the spare bedrooms and shut the doors - but for those few minutes I have them in the kitchen to trim the stems and arrange them, Cheeto will be all over them.

Sorry about your kitty
