PS questions, I need help

I do photography so I am familiar with PS but working with .BMP is new to me. So I am having problems.

When I create something, a name for an iron on for instance, it is not letting me move/add the .BMP clipart to what I have created. What am I doing wrong?

When I open a .bmp and try to move it, it just opens a new .psd and won't let me move it onto my new background? Does that make sense?

Before you try to move it try converting it to an RGB format. I usually copy and paste images from one to another. Only problem I usually have is losing the transparency if I don't convert first.
