Protest impact on Disneyland and getting there

This might be a question that locals can answer. What are the affects of all of these protests in the LA area and on Disneyland? And further to the point, what is the impact on driving to DL? I'll be driving the 5 on Sunday, as will many of my friends. We're suddenly quite worried about freeways being shut down. We're also worried about the violence happening to property and people.

We're just not used to protests here in Modesto. At least ones that are this ugly and violent. We prefer to accept life and move on best we can. I certainly don't want to get booted for being political, but these protests are political in nature. Just wanting someone to calm my fears or at least give me some usable advice to deal with all of this.

You should be fine. Law enforcement does put up with some protests, but when you block the freeway, they come out in force.

Plus I doubt the people protesting will do it on a weekend.

LOL. Unfortunately, I can't leave until about 1, so we'll be there around 7. That's prime rioting hours, right? I'm just hoping they get it out of their system by then. But that's just a few days away.

I'm kinda concerned about that for my upcoming trip. I'm worried that the quickest route that it wants me to go, may not always be the best route to take. I know theres been plenty of times I've cussed Google over the route it took me.

I work across the street from LAX and live about 10-miles from DL and I haven't experienced any delays because of the protest. I should mention that I do take the metro train to Norwalk and then drive from that location to my home.

Sorry, having lived in the L.A. area forever and having lived in the most politically progressive city in California for a bit of time, I'm totally used to these things. I forget a lot of people aren't. So...

More than likely, you'll be fine. Shutting down freeways is not typical, so it's not something you'll have to worry about too much. Even if there are protests, they're usually managed fairly quickly when they block freeways. The police are well-versed in it. If the 5 gets shut down, you can take the 210 to the 605 and spit yourself out on the 5 in Downey, which is south of where I would expect a lot of the protesting to happen. It takes you out of your way a bit, but often ends up taking the same time as the straight shot anyway due to traffic. There are a lot of ways to reroute if the 5 gets clogged up. It's a fine art to be mastered around here. Bring your GPS or use google directions in your car and it will help you reroute.

Most of the protests are concentrated downtown, so traveling on the 5 shouldn't be impeded. I know there are protests planned for Sat, but not sure about Sunday. These things are well reported on so even if the 5 is effected, as long as you're watching the news, you should be able to avoid it.

Like any other event that might disrupt traffic, keep an eye on traffic reports. That's all. I live in DTLA. I marched with the protests on Wednesday. The vast, vast majority of protestors were not being ugly, or violent, or "rioting." There have been a handful of isolated incidents of graffiti and property damage, and the people doing it have been quickly shut down by the rest of the group. Furthermore, those incidents didn't involve any bystanders in their vehicles. The only thing you have to worry about, as someone who may possibly drive near a spot that may be closed by protests, is traffic delays. (And, yeah, even that is unlikely)

The protests have been at night precisely because people work and go to school during the day. We are regular people, and your disparagement is unnecessary.

Just as an aside, would you just take the 210/605 to DL anyway? I usually just stay on 5 to ease my mind, but it's always busy through the heart of the city. Just wondering if I should take the 605 or even the 57. Seems like I took the 210/57 once and it was just as bad and long as the 5. Thanks!

Interesting to read this. It's not often you read of a self-policing protest. Most get out of hand - especially in large metro areas. I suppose I'm over reacting to all of this. I suppose we all are.

I'd just take it as disparagement of the more professional type of rabble-rouser.

I was being trained at Amazon in late '99 and we had a direct vote of the Seattle WTO protests. It started very nice. Families, people with opinions, but a nice respectful march.

As the day went on those people went home and it was different. The people showing up later were the ones prepared with gas masks and bandanas to cover their faces and clothing to obscure. They were the professional rioter type.

Of course, which group made it into the media? The news didn't show the families pulling kids in wagons at noon! They showed the same spot, at 3, when the families were gone and the jerks started spray painting the marble-walled buildings.

And for us Amazon newbies, once we were done with training we were made to walk a mile north, turn to the water, then turn south to walk that mile back plus getting to where the buses couldn't get through. Thanks to the professional type of "protesters".

Just assume someone means that sort, the ones that come in disguise and ready for anything, on their own mysterious agenda vs a more heartfelt reason, and you'll feel better.

Depends on the time of day. During rush hour (7AM-9AM on weekday mornings and 3PM-7PM on weekday evenings) the 210 to the 605 is an easier drive. Less traffic, but takes the same amount of time. On weekends, no matter the time of day, I would take the 5 straight down.

If you are a peaceful protestor, who does not block traffic or act like an animal to create mayhem, I meant no disrespect towards you whatsoever. I was merely trying to provide the OP with valid information they can use to avoid encountering those who do block traffic and try to force their opinions onto others through violence and intimidation.

If blocking traffic counts as violence and intimidation, then the people who stop their strollers in the middle of Main Street U.S.A. are terrorists and should be dealt with accordingly.

Protestors, on the other hand, should limit themselves to demonstrations that do not disrupt or inconvenience anyone else. Ideally they would stay home and grumble to themselves. Then we can deal with the real problem: the stroller stoppers.
