Hi all...

My hubby is wanting to switch to eating 6 small meals a day - 3 low carb/low calorie protein shakes and 3 balanced meals. Sounds easy enough huh? WRONG *grumble*

He is soooo darn picky...won't eat salad...and is picky about the shakes. We had EAS protein power over the summer. For those you'd mix 2 scoops of powder with water and a couple of ice cubes and it would mix up thick. We haven't been able to find the same formulation and figured we'd try the EAS whey protein shakes, as they will comparable in calories and carbs. The problem with them is they mix up with 1 scoop and 1 cup of water....it ends up like the weakest milk you've ever seen in your life and tastes FOUL. His proposed solution is to use 2 scoops of powder (which doubles the calories up to 240) AND mix it with a 1/2 cup MILK (at 15g. carbs per cup).

He gets all bent out of shape when I remind him that if he does this, he won't have enough calories a day to have three good meals (240cal x 3 = 720!). Not only that, but he wants to eat all day..which is okay, but he will NOT just stop with ONE serving of nuts...he wants 2 or 3 then complains because he GAINS weight.

So...please...if anyone has tried any protein/meal replacement shakes...I'm trying to find a chocolate shake mix, that mixes with water but mixes up thick(ish)...the consistency of heavy cream at least. I've been doing medifast and their shakes mix up nice and thick, but it is too expensive for both of us to do.

Thanks for your help.

I have not tried this, but someone recommended "Beverly" protein to me. It is only available online as I understand. The person recommending to me thought this was a good one and she was body building and used it during training. I'm not certain of the calories either and you are definitely correct about needing to keep track so you can have those other 3 regular food meals. The key to the 6 meal idea is to take what it is you would normally consume in 3 meals (about 500 cals or so) and split them. Right that you won't be getting much for "real food" but you don't really get much if you split those meals anyway. I've go to keep telling myself food is fuel and not my main source of pleasure. Good luck coming up with the solution. I do envy you since your DH is trying to do this too.

Muscle Milk is by far the best tasting protein powder I've tried. Have you tried just using less water with your current powder? That should thicken it up.

Very true. The only way to really to get your protein powder to thicken up is to add more stuff (such as peanut butter or a banana) or use less water.

Otherwise as far as the taste goes, I have tried over a dozen different types of protein powders. Some of the best are American Sports Whey, Champion, Dymatize, Muscle Milk, Isopure (lactose free) and ABB. All of these have a very good taste to them.

Hopefully that will give you a couple of choices anyway.

Pure protein bars are pretty good too. When I need candy I grab one of them. If you buy the mini ones, they are around 100 calories and honestly taste really good.

Check out www.vitalady.com

That site is geared toward people who have had gastric bypass surgery, but the products sold are ideal for weight loss for "normal" people as well. :)

They also sell sample packs of protein powders...much better than buying a whole tub and finding you don't like it.

Someone else suggested Muscle Milk. I recommend Muscle Milk Light instead, if he's trying to lose weight. Keep in mind that many of the protein powders are geared toward body builders, who are typically trying to GAIN weight, not lose it.

My favorite type of protein powder is Nectar Syntrax. It mixes with water, and it's juice-like in consistency and taste. The least expensive place to get it (with shipping) is Vitacost.com. Vitalady.com sells sample packs of it. I like the Fuzzy Navel, Roadside Lemonade, and Strawberry-Kiwi flavors. I usually mix it with Crystal Light instead of plain water.

I can also recommend Optimum Nutrition Any Whey unflavored protein powder. I buy it at Amazon. It's unflavored and also heat stable, so you can add it to your coffee, oatmeal, etc. And since it's unflavored, you can add your own unsweetened cocoa powder, or vanilla, etc.

Whatever type of protein you buy, be careful of the ingredients. Not all proteins are created equal, and some are not absorbed as well. Make sure the main ingredient is Whey Protein Isolate, or Soy Protein Isolate. Isolate is the key word to look for.

I had gastric bypass surgery a few months ago, so I'm pretty familiar with protein powder.

Muscle Milk is by far the best tasting protein powder I've tried.

I second Muscle Milk. My favorite is Chocolate Mint. I make a lot of shakes because they are convenient. I usually use 100% fruit juice and frozen fruit along with my protein of choice. Any berry-based smoothie tastes awesome with the Chocolate Mint. Any other fruit like pineapple or peaches or mangos I just go with the Vanilla.

I use pasturized egg whites for my protien, can be found at any grocery store. I usually add some crystal light and berries or a little s/f choc syrup and banana with ice to make an awesome smoothie.

I like the past. egg whites because the are low cal and dont have the sugar, carbs, and salt that protien powders do.
