What do you use to protect furniture when you are moving it yourself? Some family members will be taking antique end tables and coffee tables from my parents' house. The furniture is not particularly fragile, but I would hate to have it get scratched during the 5 hour drive.

I see that U-Haul sells "quilted pads" for $14.95.

But I also see that the Christmas Tree Shop sells blankets for $16.99.

I was thinking of buying blankets for them to use to wrap the furniture. After the trip, assuming the blankets are still in good shape, they can wash them and the use them if they need extra blankets.

Is this a dumb idea?

not at all-it's what we did when we moved antiques (didn't let the moving company touch them). you could actually get off a lot cheaper by just hitting a goodwill or salvation army store. launder them before you use them and they can be kept, tossed or redonated after using.

I would go the rent furniture pads route. Those pads are thicker then blankets!

Don't buy those from the rental place, that would be costly. Just rent some extra ones from them.

We just used our spare quilts/comforters that we have in our house when we moved the antique ice chest, antique dining room table and the antique side table. Nothing got scratched or damaged.

It worked perfectly. We have a spare quilt or comforter and blankets for every bedroom in the house and when we moved we just used the spares to wrap everything up. I even used our extra towels to wrap up the kitchen plates, bowls and glassware. It saved us money and aggravation. I just washed everything once we were set up in the new place.

You guys have great ideas!

I called the local U-Haul and they said they rent a bag of 6 quilted pads for $5.00.

But I also bought a blanket because they were on sale at JC Penney and I had JC Penney cash which expired today. It almost covered the cost. (That's like Kohl's cash. I didn't even know they did that at JC Penney.)

I also noticed when I was in CVS that they sell fleece throws which are 50 x 60 for $3.99 or 3 for $10.

I am keeping the towel idea in the back of my mind in case they decide to take some small things which were not part of the original plan. We don't have extra quilts or blankets but we do have extra towels at my parents' house.

You are guys are awesome. Thank you for helping.
