Pro's and Con's for a trip in May?

Hi! As a Florida resident I’ve been in May several times. I’ve done both the first week of May and the third week of May with kids within the past 5 years. If you don’t want to pull your kids out of school, it’s probably the best time to go. The earlier in May the better, due to crowds and heat. The first three weeks of May are hot but not unbearable like Orlando in June, July and August (humid). It’s also not as crowded as the summer. It does rain at that time so bring those disposable rain ponchos. It’s pretty in May here, You have the Flower and Garden show and again, it’s not nearly as crowded as the summer.

when do kids in florida get out of school?

Last day of school for Orlando area is May 25. Neighboring Hillsborough County is May 27. A lot of the other districts are similar, although it looks like Miami-Dade isn’t until first week of June.

i'm going first time in May (15-20). Looking forward to it. We went last year in June first time and it was wonderful. not too hot that week, idk if we just got lucky or we are used to late aug. as we used to always go then too. so we did flower and garden last june for the first time. and we will do it again this time. which is fun. we aren't pool people so that doesn't matter for our stay. happy schools aren't out yet so there's a plus.

May would be my preferred month as we went in 2018. It's not possible for us anymore but early May had good crowd levels and great weather.

We've been early May before as well. Weather was beautiful but blast it--could not STAND the love bugs! I'll take the no-see-ums here in the PNW any day over those foul beasties. I think our sweet spot month is still June (or late May)

We always go the first full week of May - unless May 1 is a Sunday, then we go the 2nd week of May. We rarely have to deal with rain, but the temp can fluctuate greatly. Some years it’s sweatshirt weather and others it’s need-a-shower-after-walking-from-BW-to-HS weather. Since you’re going a week or so later, I imagine you’ll be on the warmer side. We have never dealt with bugs, though (I used to live in Orlando in the 90s/early 2000s, and I can’t remember dealing with them in the park when I was a regular). In a normal year, our week starts out very nice crowd wise and as the week progresses it picks up as schools gradually start to let out for the summer. Here in my part of the Midwest, we’re almost always out well before Memorial Day unless we’ve had an unusually bad winter - and we haven’t. All-in-all, (during a regular crowd year) it’s a pretty good time to go. It’s anyone’s guess if that will reset this year or not.

I went in May 2019 and it wasn't very busy at all- the worst it got was stuff for Avatar (which was still pretty new). I could ride Frozen Ever After multiple times a day with little problem. It was hot, but not excruciating- you just had to get into the shade once in a while.

The lovebugs were REALLY bad at one point, particularly at Disney Springs, and in EPCOT for a bit (I remember Belle had a technique where she'd just pick them up by the wings and blow them off the palm of her hand), but after that they'd vanished. I don't know if Disney sprayed them all to death or what.

what is lovebug season and how does it affect a May trip?
"Lovebug season" is when the lovebugs come out to mat- two weeks in May & two in September. They come out in droves, mating via a butt-connection, so you see them fly around in twos like that. At a peak, they'll be all over the place, landing on any available surface. It's fine and won't affects things overly much- it's just kind of gross if you don't like bugs, because they fly everywhere.

when in may actually? mid may?

We've gone towards the end of May and it was pretty warm. But not nearly as bad as our "towards the end of August" trip. That was brutal! We are going the first week of May this year and I'm hoping for warm weather and minimal rain.
We went in May a few years ago and the rain was horrible. It wasn't those "rain for an hour and then it stops" type of showers. It rained almost all day for several days of our trip. I saw it was supposed to be rainy for most of our trip, so I packed my rain suit. I'm so glad I did. We finally just sucked it up and put on the rain suits and went out and enjoyed the parks. This was the trip where we saw the most spectacular showing of Illuminations too. Since it was raining, the lasers reflected off the rain drops and it was really magical.
