OHH! I am sooo frustrated! And now I remember being frustrated last year about this too. I just finished filling out our property tax refund form. Yeah, a little late I know, but you can qualify as long as you have it in before August of the next year. Anyway, once again we did not qualify because our property taxes are too HIGH! HOW does this make sense????? If we paid $2000 in prop tax, we would have gotten $800 back but because our prop tax is $3000 we get nothing.

Is there ANY logic in that??? Last year, our income was incredibly low. The only way we were able to hang onto our house at all was that my mom helped us out financially. DH was unemployed and I was just starting real estate. Seriously we had made like $12,000 that year and we still didnt' qualify because, you guessed it, our property taxes were over the magic number. I don't get it. I can see not qualifying if your income is too high, but not because you paid in MORE. Dumb, dumb dumb

If someone can explain this system I am listening!

Thank you. Vent over!

I hear ya. Our property just had a reassessment done and it went up over $200,000. The town is trying to make us feel better by saying not to use the old tax rate to calculate the taxes, but the thought of it scares the crap out of me. We get no relief because we're not "low-income" - um, my taxes could possibly turn out to be over $800./MONTH and I'm not THAT "high-income". Of course, it messes with the escrow, which the lender won't let me pull (if I'm sending them $800./month, I'd rather put that in my savings account and get the interest).

Thankfully, our taxes are only due twice a year. So, I can live in denial for most of the year. ;)

I'd guess they figure anyone that can afford a big house with a big tax bill doens't need the rebate. I'm not agreeing with this arguement, but I bet that's the logic.

But you're right, it should be based on income.

That is the only thing I can figure too. But how dumb. We would have sold last year because we couldn't afford the house, but we wouldn't have quailified for anything else. Sometimes you are stuck with what you've got.

MN taxes are dumb all around. (Jeez, I am using that word a lot today!!)
