We are planning a trip to Disney next summer(2014) and are trying to decide on whether to stay on property (we never have) or rent a house (like we did in 2011). I am hoping to get opinions on which way to go and the pros vs the cons of each. We know staying on property will cost more so we are concerned if the benefits out weigh the savings of renting a house. Thanks for all your help - I love this board!!!:)

Need a bit more info. Amount of people, relationship to each other, budget, objectives, etc.

It is hard to give an opinion without any information.

I can plan an "affordable" trip that allows me to stay on-site and be immersed in the magic. It means the world to me.

It's all a matter of preference, IMO. If your trip is strictly Disney, I think staying onsite is well worth the extra cost over staying offsite. Some of the benefits of staying onsite are:

- Free transportation from the airport (Magical Express)
- Disney transportation to/from theme parks, water parks, DTD
- Extra Magic Hours
- No need to leave Disney property or rent a car

For us, staying onsite is the only way to go as we love being immersed in Disney magic 24/7.

We tried renting a townhouse a couple of years ago, after many onsite stays. It was a lovely three bedroom, three bath unit in Windsor Hills. While it definitely had advantages, including price and a washer and dryer in the unit, that trip just didn't feel like a Disney World trip to me. I really enjoy the Disney resorts and that experience is worth the upcharge to me.

My opinion, if you can afford to stay on property do so. There is something so magical about being on property. The real world seems to disappear.

Besides the perks that the previous poster listed are

- Disney Dining Plan
- Package delivery from parks/Downtown Disney
- Storing luggage upon checkout until you actually leave
- If flying flight check in for several airlines.

Even though staying on property can be more expensive, I think it is far worth it.

Good Luck on making your decision.

Thanks for all the replies!! It will be myself, my husband and our twin boys (9 old at that time). We are planning to visit all of the parks but would also like a little down time - is there things to do on property other than the parks?

when we first started visiting Disney we always stayed off property, it was what we could afford, but for the past 5 years we have stayed on property at FW cabins, WL, and POR. I would never go back to off property. For me and my family there is something magical about being totally immersed in Disney. If you can afford it I would definitely stay on property
