I know they get in free, but is a birth certificate, etc.. required???

This question has been asked many times and the answer is always NO, no one has ever been asked to prove their child's age. Even if they are big for their age, Disney seems to take your word for it. We have never been asked at the 3 range or at the 10+ range.

...we took our son when he was a month shy of being 3...he was a BIG 2 year old...but no one asked us anything! Have a great time and enjoy.

Honesty is always the best policy, no matter how tempting it can be to be a little loose at times. I would just give a warning, especially to new DVC members, that Disney keeps very, very good records of your visits and contacts with them. They now ask the name and ages of all junior and child guests (they have actually done this for a long time on WDW packages, but now DVC needs all the names and ages on reservations, too). They can check for consistency from reservation to reservation and from year to year. I will note that most of this is innocent, but it can be embarassing when a CM making small talk brings something up. Also, there are things that kids need to be a MINIMUM age for (e.g., tours come to mind off the top of my head), so you can end up having the opposite problem. In addition, the arms of Disney do share information, so if you have or are going to take a cruise, they will need the birth certificate and proof of age on all passengers (or a passport which is the same type of thing). So, no real way to lie about ages there. Please understand that this is not a lecture or a response that in any way criticizes or makes assumptions about the OP. The answers given are correct. Just wanted to make sure that people realize the consequences of not being honest down the road. Again, honesty is the best policy. BTW, even being honest can create some unintentional gaffes. DSD has a mid-December birthday and we travel to WDW at Christmas time quite a lot, so it is sometimes the case that when they ask her age I mess up and use her current age rather than what they want (age at the time of the trip). This is especially true when making reservations only one month or so after she has had a birthday, LOL.
