Prone to motion sickness -- Would Caribbean or Mediterranean be better?

We did a 3 day Bahamas cruise in late Sept (25th - 28th) on the Dream.

I'm prone to motion sickness, so I was prepared with my patch and sea bands. Although I was not ill, per se, I did have that uneasy feeling, specifically on the 1st and last nights at dinner and in the theater. One of the servers told me that it was because the ship was moving fast to get to the ports since it was a quick cruise (?).

Despite that uneasy feeling, we had a blast and we'd love to do a longer 7 day Caribbean or even a Mediterranean cruise.

I'd appreciate others' insights on whether either of these would be a good option in regards to the movement on the ship. TIA

As a side note, we did a Carnival cruise to Grand Cayman, Cozumel & New Orleans about 15 years ago and the movement didn't bother me. I was also wearing my patch & sea bands then too!

The Med in July and August us very good, bar the odd storm, June can have storms.

My 12 night Med cruise in August had perfect seas and sun, it was glass like.

I think next summer in the Caribbean will be a very active hurricane season.

Haven't sailed on the Mediterrean, so I can't offer you a comparison, however from our experiences sailing on six DCL Caribbean cruises I believe that the motion that you experienced was due to the ship crossing the Gulf Stream, not speed. We did do one Western cruise (we prefer the Easterns) and if my memory serves, we did not experience as much motion on the first and last nights. I believe that was because we sailing south and north along the Florida coast and not cutting across the Gulf Stream. These are just my thoughts from our experiences, I'm sure that other Disers will be able to give you a better comparison.

We were in the Med this past August and it was the smoothest cruise we have been on. Never felt any movement. We have always felt some movement the first night we have left from Port Canaveral for the Bahamas or the Caribbean, nothing to bad, but the gulf stream can cause some movement. If you are concerned about it, Alaska was also a very smooth trip, it stays in the inner passage between the islands off of Canada and we did not have any waves at all, was very similar to how smooth the Med was.

The one Med cruise I was on was significantly more bumpy than any Caribbean cruise I've taken, but maybe that was just bad luck.

FWIW...I did the Western Caribbean in July and the Eastern in October. In July I could definitely feel the ship moving - in October barely at all (and I expected to feel it more on the Eastern based on what I'd read on the boards). :confused3 And that was in the same room location (deck 7 mid-ship). I've heard the Med cruises are really smooth.

I feel like I always feel it the most in the dining rooms, adult areas and in the theater, and mostly on the first and last nights like you said. But it's always WAY worse if I really, really focus on it. I think that's something that will get better the more I cruise and the more comfortable I become being on the ships. :)

The western Caribbean is generally calmer than the eastern, as there is less influence from the Atlantic. Cruises from PC or Miami to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean will cross the Straights of Florida and the passage, although quick, can be a little rough. Hurricane season extends from June to November and is more likely to affect eastern cruises than western. However, storms can form in the southern Caribbean and Gulf and effect the Gulf of Mexico.

In general, the Med would be smoother than the Caribbean, especially in the Adriatic region. Stronger current possibilities would be between Spain and Italy. Late spring can be an issue especially if sirocco winds are coming north out of Africa. In later summer the meltemi winds can affect the Aegean area.

That being said, you can have a very smooth cruise or very rough cruise in either region.

Perhaps one of the new European river cruises that Adventures by Disney is doing might be nice for avoiding sea sickness.
