Proms

Oh, I went to all of them. The only one that was special was when I was in 10th grade and had a senior boy friend. He was an amazing guy and we had a beautiful evening together. In 11th and 12th grade, I went with guys who were just friends and it was not at all the same. One of them opened a bottle of champagne in the car and it exploded all over my dress before we even got to the event.
Funny, I can't remember where any of these proms were held. I think random country clubs that were somewhat out of town.

Didn't go. I asked a girl I was interested in and she turned me down. So I arranged to work on prom night.

Junior prom-the guy I was really interested in came over one night for 3 hours and chickened out asking me (I had heard from friends he was coming over to ask me). So the day of the prom, my best friend's brother found out I wasn't going and told me to go get a dress, he was taking me. (he was 3 years older than myself and best friend). I went and got a dress, he went and got the corsage. We went to dinner with his cousin and date to a german restaraunt (those in Sacramento, remember the one on Fulton Ave). The whole time, the boys talked and stared at the waitress tops (low cut peasant). It was at the hall at Howe Ave park (which I wouldn't go to today as it is not a good area any longer). We dated for a few months afterward but it didn't work out as I was always at his house (had been at his house for years since it was my best friends also)
Senior Ball-went with the paperboy LOL He was a year younger and had a brother in my class. They are Hawaiian and extremely gorgeous. Both were boy of the year, homecoming princes, etc. It was a friend type date. I offered to buy my dinner but he said absolutely not-his mother said NO, he was to pay, got the corsage, etc. We went to pick up my other girlfriend and then to get her date. Her date stood her up. So, my date also paid her dinner even though she offered. We had our ball somewhere downtown because I remember going to Farrell's afterwards on the mall. Found out through social media years later that my date wasn't into girls. I don't remember where we went to eat but my mind is remembering it was a nice place.
Did not end up marrying either one...
ps..to a pp...my senior date also wore the powder blue tux with ruffles.

I’m so glad kids don’t have to have dates anymore to go to a prom. Why ask someone to go who you might not even like much just to be able to attend? My son had so much fun going to all his high school dances. Just big groups of friends getting dressed up for a fun night out. He finally asked a girl to go to homecoming his senior year. He was so nervous. It was the cutest thing ever. Then for prom a girl from his class asked him to go. He was walking on the clouds. ☺️

Went to my Senior Prom with a friend. I had a good time but nothing ever developed. (didn't meet DH until after I was out of College). The Prom was held at an area hotel ( think it was a Sheraton) that is now an Assisted Living facilty.
We went with other couples bowling and to a Diner afterwards. Next day we all went to spend the day at the Shore. Think it was Margate ( belong to someone's Parents/Grandparents ). We all had dinner at a "fancy "restaurant on the way home.
Like RedAngie my Prom was during 18yr drinking in NJ. All if us ordered a drink including the 2 of us who were 17 year olds.

In 11th grade I went with a boy I asked specifically as a friend after he mentioned he was turned down by other girls. He decided that it meant that we were boyfriend/girlfriend. It was super awkward and I had to break up with him after that.

I skipped my senior prom because I had a volunteer project I wanted to do the next morning. I was happy with my choice.

I went to senior prom but not junior prom.

Our school only allowed you to buy tickets as boy-girl couples, and there were lots of restrictions on bringing guests from other schools. I ended up going with a friend.

Limos were reasonably common at our prom, but we didn’t take one. My date’s dad had a Delorean (like the one in Back to the Future) that he was allowed to drive… but it was a stick-shift and he didn’t really know how to drive it. (He was so excited about having that car for the night but I would have preferred just his regular car.)

There weren’t any school-approved after party events, but there were private parties. We went to one (my parents knew the host parents. If they hadn’t, I’m sure they wouldn’t have allowed me to go.) But we had to leave early because my date had to be up early for his paper route.

Overall we had a nice time, but we didn’t go on any other dates.

No. Didn't pay any attention to any of the social stuff in High School. School was from 8 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday, I lived my life the rest of the time.
Now, I did date my High School's Homecoming Queen. But that wasn't until we had both graduated from College. And she was the girl next door. Never went further than a few dates, we are still friends 40+ years later.

Did you go to your high school prom? Was your date a steady BF/GF? And did that date eventually become your spouse/S0?

My HS prom was held in a local hotel ballroom. The drinking age was 18 at the time, but the prom was alcohol-free. That didn’t stop many from going out to their cars for liquid refreshment.

My date was a guy named Brian in my friend group. We dated casually a few times but were never a couple. I lost track of him after we went to separate colleges.

Hiring a limousine was unheard of in the Stone Age. He picked me up on his parents’ Chevy Monte Carlo.

After the prom some people hosted private parties. We went to two, then there was breakfast in the school cafeteria from about 4 to 6am.

Prom was Friday night. After sleeping most of the day Saturday, The Thing was to go to the Jersey Shore. We went to Lavalette, near Seaside Heights. I still don’t know who actually owned the house. I think it belonged to the grandparents of one of the students, but I’m not sure which student.
Lavalette - there’s a place I never thought I’d see on this site - my dads whole Family would spend the month of August thru Labor Day at Lavalette! Love that beach…I went to my HS prom with my steady BF (we weren’t serious and broke up during our freshman yr in college)…we went to a park the next morning. I think our prom was in the school gym…

I did go to prom with my steady BF who is now my DH - the day was 5/5/89

It was so cold that day & night, but we still insisted on arriving with the top down on my FIL’s convertible (so stupid, but we were kids. I can only imagine what our parents were saying when we drove away, because I know what I would be saying as a parent now - it was 35 degrees outside)

After the dance we went to downtown Chicago with some friends. We had dinner and went on a carriage ride.

The next day we drove 1/2 way to Six Flags Great America to find out it was closed due to snow, so we turned around and came back home and went to see the movie Major League.

The next day was nicer so we went to Great America that day.

Good memories!:goodvibes

So, basically, prom, just not named as such? ;)
Yes. Never heard the word prom used here. We just call it grad - referring to the dinner dance.

And nothing in lower grades. Sometimes middle schools have a dinner thing. I did but my kids didn’t. Just an awards ceremony and precovid a farewell BBQ in a park

Are proms held at the end of the school year?

Two proms, mine and hers. She was a girlfriend. Went with a friend of mine and his date to dinner prior. To dinner with a friend of hers and her date prior to my girlfriend's prom.

Prom was until 11 pm I think, maybe 10, at a local hotel. After prom party at the school until 4. We left the after prom early, I stayed at her house on the couch, and we went to Cedar Point the following day, both years.

The 2nd year at Cedar Point we didn't do anything. It was cold and massively windy. We got there, ordered a pizza, I put the pizza on the table (a real sized pizza back then, would probably be called an ultra extra extra extra extra large these days) and the wind blew the pizza off the table and onto the ground (face up still in the box.) We ate the pizza and went back home.
That's 2 posters who went to Cedar Point after the Prom. I am from Ohio, close to Columbus, and that was not our tradition. It must have been fun (even with the wind:)

I wore the same dress—that isn’t done anymore. My middle daughter is a senior this year and knows a few girls going to 2 proms and they are purchasing 2 dresses. I loved my dress so much I was glad to wear it twice.

:worship::worship::worship:

My daughter went to two proms. She and her date went to different schools and met a a marching band event. She insisted on wearing two different gowns. Who in the world was going to notice that she wore the same dress twice besides her date. I'm sure he didn't care.

When I raised the subject both DD and DW rolled their eyes, looked at me like I had two heads, and said that I "just don't understand." I guess not.

I went to my senior prom with a gal I was dating casually. It was at a suburban hotel and very nice. Afterwards the school had a early morning "breakfast" about 1am.

She and I remained friends but gradually drifted apart, but we reconnected on facebook about 10 years ago.

I went to my senior prom with my then boyfriend. It was at the Anaheim Hilton about an hour and a half drive away from where we lived. At the time there was no place around us nice enough for a prom. The school offered charter buses for those that wouldn't be able to find themselves that far. My BF had a car and drove us and another friend couple. My aunt lived close by so we got ready there, went to the beach after and then back to my aunts house for the night. We had a lot of fun. My BF and I broke up about 2 years after HS but are still in each other's lives to this day, he's one of my best friends.
