Promenades and Overlooks....

Okay, silly question, but please keep in mind that I have never cruised at all, so, don't laugh!!...

I have this vision in my mind, like what I've seen on TV commercials for another cruise line, of the 'promenade'. You know, with the wide nautical deck, railings, etc... with the gorgeous couple walking, jogging, or pausing to gaze romanticly over the sea.

I have studied over the deck plans, and am wondering if Deck4 is this type of promenade. Is it unobstructed... even around the front of the ship-WDW theater?

Decks 9 and 10 seem to be very small/narrow, packed with tables, deck chairs, etc.... So, this would not be a promenade, right?

And, from which decks can you overlook forward, over the front of the ship?

Also, is Topsiders/BBB set up as a way to spend some time at night, relaxing out on deck in the open- air? Are they involved in the Deck Parties on those particular nights?

Typically when folks refer to the Promenade Deck, they are referring to Deck 4. This is a full circuit around the ship with full visibility to the outside (except at the front and back of the ship where the path goes through semi-enclosed areas). You can also walk fully around the ship on Deck 10. Probably slightly less distance and no shade, but the scenery would be nice during the day. You can walk <i><b>most</b></i> of the way around Deck 9, but you would have to cut through the Forward Elevator Lobby and the Aft Elevator Lobby (or walk through the outdoor seating area of Topsider's Buffet) to get from one side of the ship to the other at either end.

It's neat to go to the front of the ship on deck 4 both when at sea and then when docked to see the difference - this is the area that the lines to dock the ship are kept & controlled.

Also, a lot (if not all) of deck 9 is mostly enclosed with Plexiglass. You can still see, but it did get very hot during the day (but was nice the night it rained....). Deck 4 had some very underused, cushioned deck chairs also. I liked to go to deck 10 mostly, especially for the forward view.

Deck 4 is the type of promenade you are probably thinking of. It is sheltered on top but the sides are open with railings. There are nice cushioned lounges scattered about with big comfortable cushions on them.

Even though we always get a Verandah room I like to go down there at night with a drink and relax as the sea goes by. This deck is closer to the water and there's usually a little sea splash coming up. That combined with the waves, the night air, and the breeze makes for a very relaxing moment. I have fallen asleep in the lounges because of this combination.

Also, this deck is less crowded than 9 & 10 and not as windy. When the dancing is going on on deck 9 this deck is quieter.

One of my favorite places on the ship by far.

At sunset, this place is very romantic!!!! We must go out here every night before bed....kind of a ritual. Those lounge chairs are the ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!!

I haven't seen those lounge chairs on the Wonder, only on the Magic, at least as of September of 2001. It would be very nice to see them also on the Wonder.

I'll check again when I'm on it in October.

albiats....I've often thought about it and never figured out why DCL would have those great lounges on one ship and not the other. It just does not make sense.

They really should add them to the Wonder....it would make that cruise so much more WONDERful......!!!!!

Believe me, I considered adding one of them to my 'carry off luggage' when I was on the Magic this past January, but I'd rather remain in good standing with DCL for future cruises.

My favorite view from the aft portion of the ship is from a table for two along the windows in Palo's. Second place would be from the secret veranda in the aft section on deck 7.

Speaking of my favorite view from Palo's, my DW and I were seated at a table for two along the windows last January, and it was on the evening that we were leaving St Thomas. The waiter asked about our beverages and then he said something about 'anything else'. I mentioned there was a sunset due any minute, but there was a big giant ship called the Grand Princess that was blocking my view. He smiled and said he'd see what he could do and went to get our beverages. While he was gone, the Grand Princess pulled away from it's berth. When he served the beverages, I said 'not bad' and I thanked him, but I said there's still another ship in my way. He said 'I'll see what I can do' and he went to get the appetizers. While he was gone, the Holland America ship pulled out of it's berth and we did indeed get to see the very end of the sunset. I thanked him again and said I was very impressed, and I certainly took his recommendations on everything for the rest of the night. He also got a generous tip out of the evening with us.

Of course, within 15 minutes, the Magic pulled away from it's berth too.

Now that I've been there, I realize that all of the ships leave St Thomas within minutes of each other, but it was more fun being amazed and thrilled.

They had very similar chairs for sales in the inflight magaize for Continental last year. I forget the manufacturer, but they were almost the exact same chair, made out of teak and cost about $900.
