Prom-Small Town Woes! Update post #32

That is ridiculous!!!!! We had the grand march then the parents hit the road and we danced all night - WITHOUT THE EYES OF PARENTS!!

Parents dress in nice clothes-
If a daughter don't have a dad, a grandpa or her mother dances with her.
The parents can make a donation to the Prom otherwise they don't have to pay.
The dad that started the father/daughter dance-whenever you see him out in public-he is always making a scene-half the time he is what our town calls "socialable drunk". Some parents in this town just keep reliving their youth, they don't want to grow up. So they have infringed on thier kids h.s. activities.

I hope you win!~ I think it is wonderful for you to push the NO PARENTS at Prom issue. I don't know if it is more embarrassing for the child to have their family hanging out at the prom or the parent that is attending.

What parent would fight to go to their child's prom? Pathetic. Me thinks some of these people need a life of their own :rolleyes1

And the father/daughter dance just seems creepy to me. For a wedding? Yes. A prom? Ugh.

Good Luck OhMari! The kids will love you if you ban the parents--I am sure of that :cheer2:

I have never heard of family going to prom. How do the kids have fun if they feel "watched" all night. I think your suggestion was a good one, your not saying the parents shouldn't see their kid your just saying see your kid then go.

Sounds like the parents need a prom of their own, lol! ;)

Does anyone else find a father-daughter dance that takes place AT the prom for girls who are 16 years old or so-kind of creepy? :confused3

ETA: Sorry hentob said it -yes, kind of creepy.

Did you have to do the introduction of your date as well? My school was smaller (less than 50 gradutating girls) and we had to stop to introduce our dates to Sr. Kevin before we were allowed inside. There was basically a reception line of faculty and nuns that you had to go through the line of them before you were allowed inside

My favorite was that you weren't allowed in without a date. One year, a girl got stood up and had to take the limo driver. In my class one girl's bf had to work late so she had to call to get special permission to be allowed inside until he arrived. There were many tears involved in that one until she got ahold of the dean of students. Gotta love the alma mater

Yes. You had to walk the "nun gauntlet" with your date and introduce him. And you couldn't attend without a date. My junior year, my friend Liz's date, Adam, accidentally left his tux on the lacrosse bus, which drove away. He wound up borrowing the limo driver's. The driver, maybe 5'9". Adam, easily 6'4". It was comedy of epic proportions.

This was not long ago! I know it reads like the 1950s, but this was 1998!

Wow, I've never heard of such a thing. I think you had some excellent ideas with the court coming in beforehand so that families aren't taking up the space at the prom. Thats even nicer than what most parents do, which is just take pictures at home beforehand. When I was in hs, I definitely wouldn't have wanted my entire family there watching me.

I do have a suggestion for you, since it seems like you might keep losing this family thing in the future. Get a fundraiser going so you can buy mats that cover your gym floor, and then move the prom back to the school gym. The gym teacher will still lose out on time while the gym is being decorated, but at least the floor won't get ruined.

Glad to see my school wasn't the only one stuck in the dark ages. I graduated in 1998 too and was amazed by the rules that were left over from the beginning days of the school. Apparently there was a fight once, so then everyone was required to have a date, since that would totally prevent 2 girls from fighting - another guy who you were using just to get in the door

I went to a small high school-though I never thought it was until I heard how big others were. We had 106 in our graduating class.

Our prom was always held at a banquet facility(place that normally does weddings) out of town, seniors and their dates only, and no parents at the prom. The senior class voted on which teachers they wanted as the chaperones.
Prom is for the kids not for family members to be there snapping pics the whole night!

;) So apparently the drunk dad thinks the definiton of being a good father is to insist that he infringe upon his daughter's prom so he can get loaded, dance with her and make an *** out fo himself.

::yes:: Sad but true, and because he is such a prominent citizen and so well liked by his peers he can be the biggest town *** and everyone just loves him, go figure! The sad thing is, he will probably end up killing someone behind the wheel of his car.

This is just weird. We have a promenade/entrance. Parents line up there and take pics. Alot of the town turns out. Parents take pics at the house where all the kids meet up. Pics are taken at prom. But I can't imagine parents going to the prom. If they need parents to chaperone they take them from the frosh/soph class.
We have an excellent after-prom at the intermediate school. This alot of parents do go to, or work at. Your parents should concentrate their efforts on something like this. DD went to a smaller hs than this. I didn't go to any of her things. And about the hs gym floor. They left their shoes at the door. Most of the girls would go out and buy crazy socks before the dance.

Well, Prom Weekend is over.

My dd said the court was very nice, but you could not see them, she just saw them walk by. The building was very packed. Then she said, absolutely no one danced. Her group was so disappointed. Coming from Jr. High they used to dance their hearts out at dances.

She said there was absolutely no room. The parents were all on the other side of the bar and were allowed to come around into the dance area and she said you couldn't move. So sad.

At midnight they walked down the road to Post Prom which was at a bowling alley. Get this, they didn't close the bar down till 2:00 a.m. Local Patrons were able to drink alcohol and watch the h.s. kids bowl and play pool. I am really upset about that. And, parents from Prom came to the bowling alley and sat at the bar drinking too. I told you my town is warped. My dd told me some creepy guy made comments at her when she went to get a soda. She said she grabbed her backpack and went in the bathroom and changed her clothes. Most kids changed out of their formals after Prom also. My dd also said the smoke from people at the bar was really bad also.

Anyway, the parents of the Queen that night decided his dd could have a party at 2:00 a.m. it lasted till 10:00 a.m. in the morning. He allowed kids to drink beer and alcohol at his home. His dd is on the softball team. I wonder if this will get out. I can't believe that dad allowedthis. When he was in h.s. he was a huge partier. I thought this guy turned his life around, he is a big volunteer firefighter, he is a great dad, had both girls in sports and helped coach and referree games, I guess the partier in him won out this night. He must of been passed out, my son knows someone who drove home drunk. Can you believe that :earseek: (my son was at his race and he called him and found all this out).

I decided I am going to write a letter and send it to the principal. It don't pay to call, I would rather document something and sign my name to it. At least our principal will have one letter of objection about our h.s. Prom.
