Prom Gowns...what are parents thinking?

I'm so glad my daughter likes to cover up what she has and not flaunt it.

Umm, I don't want to embarrass this girl, but her dress is on backwards.

That's what I was thinking because that's exactly what it looks like.

I never had a battle about appropriate clothing with my DD, she was very very modest. Good thing, because:
I would never let my DD go out of the house in one of those dresses!!!

To each his own, but I would wonder about those parents that purchase those dresses for those daughters, totally inappropriate for their ages. 17 & 18 year olds should not be dressing like that for a school function. :sad2:

That or her head is on backwards! This was my initial reaction.

Times sure have changed from when I went to prom. The more dress the better, add a hoop under it and ain't no guy getting closer than 5 ft :lmao:

Dresses like these are just asking for trouble :sad2:

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I went to 4 proms. I had a hoop under 2 of the gowns and a "krinoline" under the other 2. LMAO!!!! Good old 1984 and 1985!

P.S. The reason I went to 4 is because I went to an All Girls High School. The boy I asked to my prom asked me back to his all boys high school prom both junior and senior year. (Didn't want anyone to think I was a hoochie-mama!) :p

OK, I can't be the only one who has seen the e-mail with all the over the top prom gowns before. The one with the pregnant belly cut out is priceless :lmao:

I was in Victoria Secrets a few weeks ago and saw a mother buying her DD a thong with crystal dangling down the back end. I'm sure it was for prom, because I heard them talking about looking for shoes next to go with her dress :sad2:

Uhh.. maybe the thong 'was' her dress!

Here's a pic of my daughter's prom dress. Do you think I covered her up enough? I thought it was beautiful but showed nothing.

I think it looks very beautiful and tasteful. That is unless it ends where the photo is cropped :rotfl2: (j/k)

C'mon, we had matching yellow panties!!!

Sitting here reading and counting my blessings I have boys! I had mom make my dress, and it was long and could have used a hoop!

My daughter is very modest (dunno where she gets it from!) she is always pointing out 'hooochie mamas' at the Mall saying she would never dress like that.

We are going on a cruise soon that is 10 days with 2 formal nights, I took her out over the weekend to look for 2 gowns, she has such nice taste refusing to try some dresses altogether, she picked two really beautiful dresses, I'm really proud of her.
My daughter is modest too. Its nice to know I do not have to be ashamed of her choices.

I saw that email and I was sitting here with my jaw dropped open at some of those dresses. The one with the cut out was crazy. I dont see how some parents can think that some dresses are ok. I just hope the sweetpea remembers all Ive taught her and wont make me crazy.

Ew. Let's say it all together now class..."trashy!"

And the sad part is that most of these girls who wear those kinds of dresses walk out of the house thinking "omg, I look so hot!"

I agree. It makes me sad, sad, sad. For my proms, I wore ankle length dresses and the big thing was my mom thought I should wear hose with it, and I wanted to skip it since I had open toed shoes. That seems like 200 years ago now! (It was only 9 or 10)

As a teacher, I see a lot of inappropriate clothing, but prom takes the cake. From the cut outs all over, to the no underwear thing, to showing three kinds of cleavage, to the strings that cut into their flesh. (Another teacher refers to this as brasciole (sp?) - the stuffed beef dish tied tightly with butcher's twine. LOL)

It reminds me of something I overheard in the cafeteria the other day. A girl said "I like to (insert word of choice here, I cannot type it) It reminds boys who's better." Many, many girls think all they have to offer is their bodies/sex. That's what upsets me the most about these prom dresses. It's not just poor taste; it's symptomatic of a lack of self-respect.

A mom may think she's doing something great by getting her daughter a crystal thong, but a nice set of values and self-respect would last a lot longer, and serve her much better.

Here's a picture of my daughter at her 9th grade dance, taken this past Friday. (in our district, the kids get moved to the high school bld. in 10th grade due to size..the 9th grade dance is a BIG thing! :sunny: )

While not being overly prudish, I think she chose a dress that wasn't overly revealing. She initially wanted a lower cut one. I knew I didn't want her to wear one of those things, but I thought I knew her well enough to trust her judgement. We went to the mall, I swear, she tried 10 of them on and came out, telling me she didn't like the way they looked. She wasn't comfortable in them. I knew if I told her positively NO, we'd have a battle. :Pinkbounc She used her own judgement and I think she chose wisely. princess:

Aren't the girls wearing these revealing dresses usually the ones who complain that boys are all hands and only want 1 thing from them? Where on earth would they get the idea that the girl was open for business? :confused3  If you dress like trash you'll be treated that way.

it's not just prom dresses! i have a heck of a time trying to find dresses that dd (11 1/2) can wear for school events and the like-everything out there looks like something a freshman in college might get away with (since she's away from home and not under the disapproving eyes of parents :teeth: )-but nothing i'de let my daughter wear. i was very sad to see that loads of young girls (and i mean as young as 8/9) were wearing VERY revealing dresses on our last disney cruise. i could not believe the minimal amounts of top coverage let alone the slit up the thigh numbers these kids were wearing.

dh and i just shook our heads and thought "if they are dressing like that now, god knows what they will expect to be allowed to wear when they enter their teens" :sad2:

our school has a realy strict (by most standards) dress code-in fact 2 of the 8th grade graduates decided to get matching dresses for the recent ceremony. when the teacher/principal saw that they were halter dresses both girls (and their parents) were told to cover up for the duration of the event or not attend (can you say "mad dash home to find a couple of shawls"?)-i think both thought they were going to get away with it by virtue of showing up 30 minutes ahead of time wearing the outfits-no such luck, the teacher/principal took a stand on the preexisting policy and stuck to it (personaly, i can't believe the parents let them blatantly disregard the rules, but then again these are the same parents you see dropping the girls off in belly baring shirts and "painted on" jeans that the teacher/principal makes them wear buttoned up oversized men's flannel shirts over the minute they hit the classroom :sad2: ).

barkley -

It is hard to find age-appropriate clothing for my DD as well, but I was able to find a very pretty dress/outfit for my DD(13) at The Gap Outlet. She got a "VS" Very Small women's size dress for her confirmation today. Everybody said that she looked beautiful. If anyone is looking for prom dresses in the future, I have seen some *very* inexpensive (& beautiful!) full-length dresses at Talbots Outlet. I was able to get a beautiful dress for myself there, originally-priced at $190 for only $13.

My DD & I were chatting about appropriate clothing last week. I said "well, you wouldn't want to see Mr. _______ teach class in a swimsuit, right? That would be inappropriate."

I figure if she ever does want to dress like a prosti-teen, I can dress like a hoochy-mama & embarass the h*ll out of her :lmao: !

agnes!

all i can say is EWWW!!

We had a SUPER strict dress code for our prom completely decked out with 'monitors' checking out everyone that came in and turning people away that showed a bit too much!!
