Prom Gowns...what are parents thinking?

I do not even know WHERE one would purchase these gowns unless there is like a porn catalogue out there somewhere.

actually...last year, around prom time, there was a news story about a dress similar to the one you describe. it was being sold in stores that cater to promgoers. I saw the article in my local paper and also on a national news website.

Can you say "Hookers At The Point"?!!!

Where I live the kids have a grade 8 graduation. Over the years this has grown to be quite the production with some kids showing up for the ceremonies in limo's etc.

I tell you I volunteer a lot in the schools but, I never saw anything like what I saw at my sons grade 8 grad.

The girls were dolled up like Baby Jane Hudson they had on sooo much makeup!! And some of these girls were only thirteen!! The dress were cut low and for most of them it was the first time they wore heels. Well don't you know NOTHING would do but, they wear the highest of high heels. It was hilarious watching them teeter totter over to get their diploma while trying to stay upright!! Not a one could walk straight in those heels. There were only about two girls who came dressed very classicly. Both of them looked absolutely wonderful that night. A tiny little bit of lipstick maybe and a very nice dress but no "bling" type of stuff. I thought how much nicer they looked and they were not the ones who looked so silly trying to walk across the wood stage floor in four inch heels!! LMAO what were these parents thinking?? :rotfl: I got a laugh out of it though. There wasn't much else you could do. :p

I really hate to say this.....but....

These prom dresses are the norm here in the South... :sad2:

OH MY GOODNESS!! I made my post before I saw those pictures!! Those "outfits" are waaaay over the top for a girl that age and especially for an event like graduation!! :sad2:

lighten up people...it's just a dress!!! If I want to buy my DD a booty showin, **** revealing dress, who are you to judge

jk ;) well ~ you all said you were waiting for it, I thought I'd speed it up a little!

my younger dd is graduating from 8th grade in a few weeks, and there's a semi formal party after the ceremony.

around here, many of the kids have spent most of 7th and 8th grade on the bar/bat mitzvah circuit, so they're used to dressing up and wearing heels.

but the school did feel the need to remind us it's a "semi formal" -- the dress code says "no evening gowns" and nothing too revealing.

Umm, I don't want to embarrass this girl, but her dress is on backwards.

Well Charade you were right!!

The dress in red is the one that the girl had on. Can you belive it? AS to lightening up...I guess maybe some of the parents thought the invitation said Porn NOT Prom

:rotfl2: Embarass her? LOL!! I wonder if that would be possible? :rotfl2:

Well it looks to me that you can see the line from the implant on the girl in the red dress ...do you think that would embarrass her...nahhh!

I work at a convention center and we host a few proms each year. Perhaps because of our rate structure we seem to avoid the inner-city type proms but we do alright with the upper-suburbian types. Our last prom was very nice and some of the young ladies were down-right gorgeous. Our only problem was we had an inner-city class reunion at the other end of our building and some of the reunion attendees seemed to want to find new dates...

You must work in Cleveland. There's no inner city in Akron. There's Kenmore and is it Firestone Park, but that's inner city lite. Those aren't major crime centers like the big cities have and I see no problem with mixing people from those neighborhoods with the Northwest corner folks. Now, the age difference could have been a problem.

If high school girls in Akron are dressing that skanky, I would be surprised.

Some of you probably know that I DJ. I will NOT do HS parties just because of this type of stuff.... Many of my DJ associates tell me of the "dancing" that gets done in outfits like these. Might as well be having public sex.

If I am alive in 13 years, when my twins want to head to the prom, you can be darn sure they won't be wearing anything like that. But, hopefully, I will have raised them well enough that it wouldn't ever become an issue.

Some parents need a baseball bat to their heads.......maybe knock a little sense in their heads.

That or her head is on backwards! This was my initial reaction.

Times sure have changed from when I went to prom. The more dress the better, add a hoop under it and ain't no guy getting closer than 5 ft :lmao:

Dresses like these are just asking for trouble :sad2:

actually, it is on backwards. according the the newspaper article I saw, there's more fabric on the other sife of the dress. someone put it on this way as a joke and someone else took her seriously...

You know I hate to say this, and my son would probably be a nervous wreck and delighted with some of these contraptions called "dresses" but, I'm not sure if he showed up with a "date" dressed like the girl in the red dress which is configured that way, that I wouldn't tell him he couldn't go out with her. I know, I know that is mean but, really!! He would be responsible for his date all night and I just wouldn't be comfortable with that! I really don't think our high school would allow those dresses though! *whew* *thanks the good lord right now that DS's girlfriend looks like Cassie off the real McCoys!" LOL!! Now I've totally dated myself. :lmao:

well it was not on backwards last night that i for sure. It was like that and it looked like wide suspenders. Maybe it was a joke last year but the ones last night were NOT joking. AND the one who had the crack exposing one on could NOT say it was on backwards otherwise it would have been a frontless dress.

Ok. I gotta tell my story.

My 16 yr old stepdaughter had a banquet this month. Her mom took her to buy her dress. We are thinking, "Wow! Great!" since her mom pays no child support and provides NOTHING for this child. Her mom took her to have the dress shortened. Again, we were pleasantly surprised at the participation. It never crossed our mind to check on the appropriateness of what her mother purchased. We did not get to see the dress before the banquet, so we waited up for the end of the banquet to see how pretty we just knew she must look. I was shocked beyond belief to see this CHILD (oh, yes, 16 is so a child!) wearing a black halter type dress split down to her navel!!! What could I possibly say at this point? I told her she looked beautiful and then asked if the dress was a pain in the behind to wear. She thanked me and then agreed that it was uncomfortable. She had another formal the next night and had planned to wear the dress again, but she traded with another girl and was fully covered the next night. Thank Goodness!

So, in answer to the op's question, I have absolutely no idea what dsd's mom was thinking. I cannot imagine sending my daughters out looking like sluts. I just hope dsd learned a lesson. We sure did. We will be approving the prom dress regardless of who pays for it!
