Project Runway

I wound up enjoying this week's runway very much, despite my aggravation that we still haven't had a challenge to really let these designers show us who they are. The challenges have been far too constrained with team or materials or theme (lingerie shilling for Heidi). I would have had a difficult time selecting a winner between Kelly and Ashley, but I must say I was delighted for Kelly to get a win. Her humble attitude and self awareness that she doesn't know it all is an absolute breath of fresh air amongst the normally jaded, outre', snotty hipster artistes we've been overrun with, particularly since the Mondo era has overrun the show. Initially I didn't expect her to last long because I assumed her self taught sewing couldn't run with the big dogs, but she's surprised and impressed me, even if I don't always get her aesthetic.

Didn't he use too much muslin and break the rules in the hallmark challenge?

No, that was the guy I think from Germany (?) who scrapped his initial idea and used the gold letters with muslin. He got cut.

Swapnil did the "Alice on acid" dress that the judges liked.

They did like it but he used a lot of muslin on that one too.

Did any of my fellow PR watchers see Heidi Klum's review on "Fashion Police" recently? Apparently they did NOT like what she wore to the Emmy Award show, and I have to admit that even I laughed at it. As they said, her outfit was kind of reminiscent of Big Bird. I just thought it was ironic that someone who's is supposed to be such a design "judge" (although I don't think she's an official judge on the show) gets dumped on for her poor fashion sense.

What did everyone think of the most recent episode? I feel like the judge's split was because some judges (aka Zac Posen) weren't really in tune with what the target market might want and didn't really buy into the purpose of the challenge. Also, while I wasn't a fan of Kelly's outfit I think there's a real market for that outfit and that market shouldn't be discounted. I could see fans of Miley Cyrus for example wearing that. It was fun and definitely sellable. I also thought the red dress was a good choice. It was perfect for the brief, target market, and the customer (Just Fab). It could also be mass produced easily without looking like crap and paired with Just Fab accessories and shoes on the website to nudge buyers of the dress to also buy the paired items for a complete look. I think a good judge should be able to understand markets that are very different from their own and respect them even if it's not their thing. I think Zac can be a bit snobby sometimes and can't always do that. Not all challenges are about couture or high fashion.

I get that the challenge was about creating something sellable to the Just Fab customers, but I also agree that it would be nice to see something "new". That red dress HAS been done a million times. It has mass appeal but I can understand Zac's comments about it not being innovative.

I totally agree that it wasn't innovative. I think Edmund could have designed something innovative but he was smart and realized that winning the challenge was all about pleasing Just Fab which meant designing something that was sellable on their website and easy to mass produce. If the show doesn't want to see such garments win challenges then they shouldn't have challenges with clients such as this one. Innovative often means too out there for a client like Just Fab or too difficult to mass produce.

On another note, I wish they had been required to do something more interesting with their logo than just put it on a t-shirt and wear it. I feel like it was a real missed opportunity.

I liked the challenge a couple of seasons ago where they started using those computer generated printed fabrics. Maybe they should have something more like that?

I agree that the ******* between innovation and designing for the challenge wasn't fair. I was expecting them to produce the red dress and Ashley's jacket as both pieces could have worked together.

That dress was only $49 on JustFab. I was expecting it to be more.

I loved Ashley's jacket. The dress was so/so but I'm sure the cost to make that jacket was a deciding factor in who won the challenge.

Yes I heard Heidi say that Tim Gunn used more F-bombs on this season than he has in ALL the seasons. You'll notice he has not used his save yet. He probably doesn't think they ousted designers deserve to be "saved"

I liked Ashley'sjacket
The whole point was easily made quickly to sell cheap -that's why Edmunds was chosen......this week is my least fave challenge EVERY season - dressing the real every day girl

Oh gosh

All of the designers have gotten so BORING
It's almost like the ordinary girls I spire nothing
Yawn

Next week looks interesting.

Disappointed, but not overly surprised at this week's elimination.
