I'm not computer illiterate, but I cannot for the life of me figure this out!

I have a document that I would like to scan to my computer. I would also like to be able to fill out this document from my computer, so that it looks professional, instead of just filling it out by hand.

I must be doing something wrong, because although I can surely scan it, I can't alter it by putting in my own text in the desired fields.

There must be a DIS'er out there that does professional looking documents and can tell me what I'm supposed to do.

Thanks for any help/advice you can give me!

Boy, I can't think of any way to do that from a scanned document. Is the document online anywhere? If it is in a PDF format you can usually do that online unless the document is protected.

Do you know anyone with a typewriter?

No, I can't find a PDF for it anywhere.

Maybe that's why I'm remembering filling things out "professionally" before, and why I can't get it to work now. It would make sense that I filled out a PDF online, and not a scanned image.

Maybe I could use MS Word or Publisher somehow and insert text boxes?

It's making my head hurt.

A scanned document is a "picture"...you can't type text in a picture(without specialty software). It took me FOREVER to explain this to my husband who INSISTED he could do this! LOL!

It can be done if your scanner has OCR capabilities (Optical Character Reading). I've done it plenty of times, especially at work.

The only way I know of is to use Adobe Acrobat Professional. I use it at work and that's how I turn a scanned document into a "fill in" form.

Ah, so there is a way. You just have to find the right software. Or an optical character reading scanner.

Ok, since I don't have either of those, I guess I'm stuck for now.

Ok, my scanner DOES have OCR. I just checked the settings, and it says "When scanning a document for editable text, a resolution for the best OCR results will be used."

So then why can't I edit the text then?

I have no idea! What kind of file is it saving it as?

(If you lived closer, I'd come over and help! :lmao: )

In my opinion, you can save the extracted text as txt or rtf, then you can edit it.

This is seriously maddening! Isn't there anything the MODS/Webmaster can do about those stupid threads on the bottom!?!?!?
I think it's just the way this site is set up. They scan of similar threads that you've hit on before, and suggest them. Since DISboards has never really deleted any threads, there's a lot of materiel for them to dredge up.

I don't think there's a rhyme or reason. A lot of the ones being suggested for me are budget and WDW trip threads (old ones at that). I've never even gone into those sub-forums before or even WDW in general.

I think someone was maybe doing a search and this thread came up? The poster that resurrected chose this as his/her first thread to post on the DIS. :)

The resurrection of zombie threads used to come about that way, and thankfully it was just an occasional thing.

Now that there are links to random threads (both old and new) at the bottom of every page, it's resulted in lots of old threads being bumped every day.

I would think someone would want to take a look at this, as it runs the risk of making the information posted on this site look dated.

Maybe keep the random thread links (because clearly people DO click on them!) but limit it to threads posted within the last month or something.

As an FYI, running adblock does keep the links off the bottom of the page (I only see them on my phone) but once the thread gets bumped it's on page 1 for everyone to start posting on again. Some threads are timeless. I think this thread proves that others are not.
