Procedure for II trading?

How does the "trading" with Interval International work? At what point in the year do you or can you book? Are many resorts difficult to get?

My DH wants to go skiing in CO. next year, 2008, the week after New Years. Would that be practically an impossibility? I am just not sure where we as DVC members fall in the pecking order.

Also, what is the quality of the various resorts? Up to Disney standards?

Any input would be much appreciated!!

Thanks tons!!

A great resource for timeshare reviews is tug2.net. The discussion forums are free - tugbbs, but to access the resort reviews section, you have to be a member of tug (timeshare users group). I think it's still $15.00 a year, but well worth it. I'm a member and always check the timeshare resort reviews to get an idea of quality on a resort before we try to stay there.

I would say any name brand should pretty much be up to Disney quality - like Westin, Sheraton, Marriott, Hyatt, etc. Our DVC Member Getaways brochure shows the names of resorts listed by state and it's also color coded to show you which collection the resort is from - Disney collection, Concierge, Adventurer, or World Passport Collection (Interval International).

I would think putting a request in a year in advance would help and it not being a holiday week should help. I don't know much about trying to trade into that area of the country during ski season, but maybe some other members will be able to chime in with their experiences.

littlestar has given you great advice. You should start your search ASAP after you know which properties you want. If you want the week that starts the following weekend after the first, that is a fairly low demand week and should be relatively easy to get. Still, you may be waiting to 3-4 months out. You might consider the CC with Keystone or a private exchange. The Name brands should be good except for Marriott Vail. Hyatt, Sheraton, other Marriott's, St James Place, Franz Klammer for places like CO, Utah and Lake Tahoe. Also Grande Timber, Westgate Park City come to mind. Note, I did not cross reference to the DVC list, only II, so you may fine one or two not on the DVC exchange list. There are others I'd consider but not that much using DVC points. You might also consider a rental as this can be a good time to get units in general as it's relatively low season for Jan after the holiday.

WOW I know I am new at this!! I have no idea how you would go about a private exchange. You two are both pros!! Thank you for the advice!

I have heard it is really not cost effective to go outside of Disney very often.
Is this true? We did not particularly want to get involved with renting, but that doesn't mean we won't try it sometime.

Thanks again -

A private exchange has some risk but it is controllable. TUG at tug2.net, her on this site for the Rent/Trade board and redweeks are good places to start. Exchanging DVC is rarely a good value but it's your choice as to how you want to use it and judge for yourself. Good luck.

If you go to Keystone, stay at Jackpine or Black Bear. those are closest to the River run gondola -- other than the real pricy places right by the lift. Google them. You can find decent deals that time of year. I don't know if it might be better to rent points and pay cash for the condo.
Word is that they are moving the gondola base across the river waaay closer to the lodges. That may happen by '08. I also heard they're putting a big, ugly Marriott right there.
Please post what you find, as I ski out west every year at least once. This year I'm looking at Snowbird, Lord willing. I just filled out a survey on my interest in a new resort there -- part or full ownership options. Have you looked at the timeshare there? Iron blosam. It's great, but a little walk to the gondola. It's truly less than an hour from the airport and an easy drive without any major switchbacks. You can go from rain to three feet of fresh powder in twenty minutes. But maybe I'm telling you what you already know.

I don't see anything in Interval right now. Deposits don't typically occur until within a year. There is a decent unit available through RCI at Fairfield Pagosa.
