Problems with the DIS? Anyone else - or just me?

Both yesterday, last night, and tonight I've been having awful problems with the DIS.. Either I get a message that the page can't be displayed or it takes forever for a page to load..

Yesterday and last night I just didn't have the patience to deal with it so I signed off and now tonight I'm losing my patience as well.. Is it my computer - or are others having trouble as well?

I haven't been on that much either but I have noticed that sometimes it's really s l o w

It's intermittent, and it's been going on, for me, for months, really, but I think I know what it is. A year or two ago, there was a problem discovered, with vBulletin software, that essentially prompted many vBulletin forums, including the DIS, to ban "long threads". My guess was that the query associated with displaying a "long thread" was working with a dataset beyond what RDBMS could efficiently handle. Banning "long threads" helped this situation immensely. I now suspect that when we encounter these (very similar) delays in loading pages, it is because of another scenario that results in an inefficient/long-running query. My guess this time is that it is related to some members' subscription lists. I had thousands upon thousands of subscriptions, most of which hadn't had a new message posted since before 2008. I trimmed my subscription down to just recent threads, and I noted a very substantial decrease in the amount of latency I was personally experiencing. I suspect when I do experience the problem, now, what is happening is that the server is busy processing some other long-time user's subscriptions list.

If it's still extremely slow, I'll get off and go back to reading my books.. Wonder if we're due for another upgrade or something?

But that's not fair - because I haven't made the final decision to be baptized into the church yet!

Still no progress on getting the Amish buggy and the horse from my DD and her DH for my birthday either.. DD asked me if I had found any good Amish recipes yet and her DH spoke right up and said, "I am NOT becoming Amish!!" So I said, "Fine - take your fraa and your kinner and hit the road.."

That was the first R-rated movie my parents ever let me watch....actually, they made me watch it. I was happily watching Little House On The Prairie reruns upstairs and my mom came and got me and brought me downstairs to watch Witness.
