My mother and I were planning on staying at the Polynesian with a garden view in a handicapped room for our WDW vacation. Then we started thinking of the Contemporary and staying in a MK view room. When that didn't work, my mom realized I really wanted a MK view, and she really wanted to stay in luxury, so we decided on the GF with a MK view.

We called AAA and asked for the room. The AAA agent said that the GF had one handicapped room with a MK view, and if we didn't get that, we'd be able to get a shower bench and a hand-held shower head (which is the only thing my mom really needed).

Two hours after we booked our vacation, our AAA agent emailed me and told me that the ADA room and the accessories we requested would not be available for the dates we wanted. Frustrated, we called the GF, who told us that as long as we provide our own tub bench, they'll be able to provide the shower head.

Should I trust the GF about the shower head problems, or should I go to the Polynesian and get a MK view room? I know it won't be the same, but I'd rather have my mom be able to take a shower.

I would suggest calling special (medical) reservations at 407-939-7807 with your reservation information in hand and talk to them. Tell them what happened, and what was said. They will, at the very least, be able to make sure that the GF is able to provide the shower seat and hand held shower head.

You shouldn't have to bring your own shower/transfer bench- those are provided at the resorts. There is no MK view at the Poly that is accessible however if all she needs is a transfer bench and hand held shower, that can be provided in any regular bathroom. I agree...call DRC and ask to have Special Services help you with your reservation. If they are unable to do this because you booked thru AAA, then you'll need to contact your AAA agent to investigate. I wouldn't arrive at the GF and spend time trying to get the equipment that should already be placed in the room, and I wouldn't go out and purchase or bring a transfer bench that should be provided. ---Kathy

I agree with the other posters.
If she doesn't need the fully accessible room, they should be able to provide what she needs in any room.
You may find that because AAA "owns" your reservation, Disney won't talk to you (that's how things work with a travel agent - they are the 'go-between' for changes). Someone suggested a way around that might be to go to the AAA office and have the agent call while you are there. The agent can then hand over the phone to you so that you can talk to Disney Special Reservations directly.

After we were confirmed that we would be able to have the accessories provided, we were told yet again that we weren't (by the Special Needs supervisor).

How does the Grand Floridian get away with only having 14 disabled rooms when they need to have 18 for a property such as their size?

I'm not sure if that is the total number or not.
They would have had to meet the guidelines when it was built.
