Problems ordering a cake for FA child

We're going over for three days for my son's fourth birthday (he chose POFQ as his hotel, shocking). I've been trying for more than a month to get a cake for him. I finally got someone who could "help" me the other day.

The cake we wanted can't be made for him, that's fine. It comes premade. But they CAN make him a safe cake, but then they won't decorate it. They'll ice it, write happy birthday on it (but can't guarantee his name. Huh?), but won't actually decorate it. At all. No mickey mouse, no nothing. So then I asked if I could get a RK mickey head decorated, not unless I buy the $50 from goofy's (and I so don't need a RK that feeds 30).

If I was getting him a "normal" cake they would decorate however I want. But because I'm ordering a "special" cake they won't decorate it. What gives? How can I get them to make him a cake? They won't let us bring our own, and I just want him to have a birthday cake at his birthday dinner.

I wish I could be more help, but I am having a similar problem(Not with a cake but with getting an accomidation). The only suggestion I have is-have you emailed Brenda? She has always been wonderful in the food department.

Have you considered that they maybe CAN'T guarantee the decorations meet all the allergy requirements? they may not have control over those ingredients. I personally feel this would be the case because I'm sure considering how much Disney does to accommodate allergies and special needs they aren't doing it just to be inconsiderate or uncaring.

I also think that having a cake with his name and lots of candles in a special place- it's Disney for heavens sake! would thrill any 4 year old, sometimes as Mom's we stress out over way too much.

Maybe go back to the room or poolside after your dinner and have your own cake there???

We often have dinner and then dessert a little later somewhere else and really enjoy it much more.

It's not because the icing isn't safe, it's because they're unwilling. I KNOW this because she said she'd decorate it if we bought a bigger cake (which we don't need or want). The decoration is safe. It's the same icing they're writing with. It will fit just fine on the cake we wanted, we're willing to pay for the decoration, they just plain won't do it.

How do I contact Brenda?

Oh, and first we tried for CM but Contemporary flat out refused to even make him a cake at all. We tried another restaurant where they were more than willing to make it, but just don't have the skills to decorate it. Then CM called back and said they'd make it, but won't decorate it OR write his name on it, just happy birthday.

I'm probably going to just go to Goofy's and buy some chocolate covered mickey heads, put sprinkles on the ears only, and draw mickey faces on them. He'll be happy enough, and I can buy them with snack credits as well!

If they are using a "special" icing for the cake, that may be why they aren't decorating it. Some icings do not lend themselves well to piping decorations. Plus they'd need separately maintained piping bags, tubes, and possibly a separate prep area...because once in a piping bag, one icing looks pretty much like any other. It may be their policy to put a special low sugar or non-sugar icing on any FA cake, even if the person isn't allergic to their regular icing. I really can't imagine the hassle if they had different cakes/icings for each specific food allergy. For instance, a gluten free cake with nuts, a gluten free cake without nuts, a gluten free cake with regular icing, a gluten free, rice free, nut free cake...etc.

Disney does well with allergies, but at the same time, they need to try to follow broad guidelines to cover more than one allergy. If they get too specialized, adding in human error, someone could have a very serious reaction.

The icing is fine, and I could understand it if it was an icing issue. But she told me they would decorate it only if I agreed to order a bigger cake. First off, I don't need a $50 8" cake for one child. Nor do I need a ton of decoration. I'd love something special, but I'm fine with mickey mouse. Really, the easiest thing in the world to draw, disney or otherwise. And if I ordered a regular cake, they'd do it. And if I ordered a FA cake in a larger size, they'd do it. But if I want this size allergy safe cake, they won't do it. That's not unable, that's unwilling.

Since they won't let you bring your own cake, but are unwilling on the size, see if they'll let you bring your own cake. I know a local cakemaker who just might be able to help you, PM me if you can get them to accomodate...
