But when you rent points from a DVC member, I thought I read we could buy the dining plan and pay for it when we get to the Hotel to check in. Is that right or does it have to be paid for in advance?

The DDP must be ordered at least 3 days before arrival and needs to be paid for when added to the reservation. This is the same for renters, guests and DVC Members.

sorry to be captain obvious, but keep in mind that means the dining plan must be ordered by the DVC owner 3 days ahead of time...which means a renter needs to give the DVC owner more notice than that.

But was just checking. She said we could pay with gift cards. So I need to find out if I can pay with a credit card also or if she only wants gift cards and if they have to be disney. Add we don't have any place around here to buy them. I'd have to go online and order them or make a trip to the big city. Thanks

Correction to those comments above:

For DVC, the dining plan must be paid for 48 hours in advance. For other resort reservations, the deadline is 72 hours.

That used to be the case, it was changed about 3 or 4 years ago.

It can be paid with credit cards also. I suspect the owner your renting from might have thought you wouldn't feel comfortable providing a credit card or might not have wanted the responsibility of accepting that but it is an acceptable form of payment.
