We have owned at Kidani for almost 2 years now and had our first/only stay at Kidani earlier this year. We really really really didn't like it.
I wanted to know - can you transfer your ownership to a different resort paying or receiving back any "differences" in cost/value? I am sure that's a "no" but just wondering??

Your gut feeling is right. You would have to sell, and there are people on the Disboards who have done just that. I'm sorry you didn't like your Kidani stay. Is there another DVC that you would prefer to have?

We own at Animal Kingdom but have only stayed at Jambo house and we love it there, must admit we visited Kidani last year and decided we did'nt want to stay there..

Well the old addage, "buy where you want to stay" but in the end unless you travel at peak busy times, I've found no trouble booking other resorts at the 7 month mark. I'm happy w/ OKW but because of kids, friends and family we usually only stay at OKW every other trip!

Good Luck!

Did you dislike Animal Kingdom Lodge in general, or just Kidani Village? Any possibility that you would be happy staying at Jambo House? I would think about that before I decided to sell.

I had a feeling and we did look into selling actually, but being less than 2 years in, we are looking at a loss...lol. I wish there was a "contract trade" option. We have only stayed at Kidani, OKW and SSR. We have stayed at SSR about a dozen or so times and we LOVE LOVE LOVE it there. We feel so "at home" - even on our 1st stay of just 1 night for MNSSHP in 2008. Our only drawback is the contract length. Also, having 12 months booking priority isn't really necessary there it seems as we have called twice for same day reservations and been able to get them no problem as well as other short term res requests.

Ok - our original thinking was that Kidani (or AK in general) would be cool because of our son and any anticipated future children (which we now have a daughter as well). The animals and the pools really appealed to us for that reason. We bought Kidani while it was still under construction so we had not had the chance to try it out first...Overall, we did not like how dark Jambo House seemed when we went over a couple times during our Kidani stay and Kidani lacked dining options...everything felt so dark and heavy and getting around was labored, inconvenient and somewhat annoying...I am not, in any way, hating on Kidani or AKL but it just didn't end up really being for us :(

DVC is a real estate purchase, so that would be like going back to the realtor you bought your house from two years later and asking to trade it for the house down the street. You'd need to sell your home and buy the other house. Same with DVC.

But really, there's no need for you to do that. SSR is the largest DVC resort, I doubt you'd ever have the slightest bit of trouble getting what you want at 7 months out. For Christmas-New Years, maybe. But not any other time of year.

I get my point on the resale Timeshare Store. I got a good price so it worked for me but I have stayed at AKV 3 times in the last 5 months. I would change my points because I am finding it hard to stay any place else.

Why don't you just sell it and buy a resale at saratoga. You will make a profit and be happy. Don't worry about taking a loss, you are actually making a gain.

Just like buying a home when you already own everything price wise is relative. When prices go up in the resale market your contract will be worth more but you will pay more for whatever you buy and same happens when prices go down. Write it all down figuring in annual dues (I believe AKL is on the high side correct?) and make a decsion from there. I also do agree if you love SSR you probably will not have a problem at 7 months booking there (along with OKW). Good luck

We spent a couple of years researching and visiting different DVC resorts before we bought. After our first purchase, we stayed at other DVC resorts before we bought again.

We eventually purchased 26 contracts at 5 different resorts to guarantee our 11 month booking advantage. It only takes a couple of disappointments to really make you understand the importance of buying where you love to stay.

The problem with taking the loss (which the resale store figured us at around 4k?) is bringing it to the closing table....Honestly, we should have bought resale but the matching builder points at SSR offered by DVC back when we bought was pretty enticing.
You know how people a few years back started house swapping because selling got so difficult? It would be awesome if a market for DVC contract swapping existed!
And you all are right - we NEVER have an issue getting a ressie at SSR so we probably would not buy there...

I would guess everyone that has bought in the last 3-4 years is taking a loss. But I really had no plans to ever sell my BCV so the point value is meaningless to me. And when the contract ends, the whole thing could be called a loss since you lose ownership at that point. But I'll be dead then so who cares. It's all about the enjoy time now.

No, I would never buy where I didn't love it first before I bought.

we bought BLT but have not gotten to stay there yet.. We love the design and location but our 1st visit home was planned in only 4 months since we bought in Aug 2009 and spent Christmas 2009 there...so BLT was not available, but we stayed at Kidani SV and LOVED it. We were in WDW for the actual day I could book Thanksgiving 2010 so I missed it and BLT (again) does not have availibility (we are taking extended family in 3 condos) so back to Kidani SV! I guess I can not complain too loudly, if it were just us I could have reserved BLT, but needing 3 condos for the group threw a wrench in it....Maybe that is a good reason for a trip home to BLT next October...now just to convince hubby :rolleyes1

So far we have stayed at BWV and AKV, I have not met a DVC I do not like and really am glad to have the option to try them all out, I would not like being tied to only one specific resort...

Disney's ROFR pretty much kills this concept. The good news is that if you had bought most traditional timeshares, you'd be looking at a much steeper loss.

And you all are right - we NEVER have an issue getting a ressie at SSR so we probably would not buy there...

If you love SSR and have no problem getting reservations there, why would you feel the need to sell and incur a loss? Just keep reserving at the 7 month mark. It will almost always be available.

Poll: If you had the option of transferring your ownership to a different resort, would you?
I'm having a difficult time choosing an answer for your poll. On one hand, I have no connection with my home resort (SSR). On the other hand, I've had very little trouble using my points to book other DVC resorts.

We purchased SSR sight unseen in May 2004 based on its longer contract and low dues. We continue to be happy with those aspects. We made our first trip to SSR in Dec 2009 (Treehouse Villas) and look forward to our next visit in Oct (Grand Villa). Beyond those two stays, our points have worked well for stays at Vero Beach, Boardwalk Villas (a favorite!), Animal Kingdom, Grand Californian Hotel (and soon GCV), Old Key West, and Wilderness Lodge (loved it!).

Bottom line for me: while I may not "feel the love" for my home resort, the points are working fine. I don't see anything much better on the horizon -- and thus no specific need to "switch resorts."

Room location might be a key to enjoying Animal Kingdom resort (lodge and villas)?

Our first stay at AKL (hotel side) was in 2005 following the late summer "Bring the Magic Home" Panama Canal cruise. We booked two standard savanna rooms on AP rates and were upgraded to a huge, end-unit, 2BR suite on arrival. We seriously loved it. :lovestruc The rooms were large with multiple large balconies and plenty of light. Everything about the unit was simply amazing.

With the memory of our magical visit in 2005 we seriously toyed with an add-on at AKV when it was first announced ... but chose to try booking on our existing points instead. With great anticipation, I phoned on the first day reservations were allowed for "non-owners" and was thrilled to (eventually) book a Club Level 1BR for our first stay in this new resort. We eagerly tacked these nights to the end of our annual BWV stay (conference) as the "vacation" portion of our visit and the opportunity to join the Wanyama Safari (evening event with dinner at Jikos). While we loved the Safari -- we really disliked the room for reasons including: dark (dark, dark, dark), awkward layout, lack of closets, and general feeling of being cramped. (Didn't help that we were assigned an HA unit without jetted tub and having no storage space in the bathroom, too few towel racks, no robe hook and no way to control the shower's water from running all over the bathroom floor.)

Looking back -- I think room location may have something to do with one's impression of AK rooms. Our first room, while having dark furnishings, didn't overwhelm us as it was filled with light from the many windows on two sides. The later CL villa was tucked way into the corner of the building, had fewer windows, and its light obscured by overhanging roof materials. Had the room been brighter (preferably using natural lighting) - I'm sure I could have better handled the cramped and cluttered conditions.

if I had to do it over again...I would have bought somewhere other than SSR..on the other hand, I have been able to stay in a THV which was amazing..and we have stayed at BWV, BCV, VWL all without difficulty..I tried to get BLT at the 7 month window without success...but I would NEVER buy there right now with how high the costs are..maybe when they go down we will do an add on..or a resale add on at BCV:)
