Hi all, this is a vague post, but I am wondering if you can point me in the right direction to find out info about DL. We go to WDW every year, but we have decided with all of construction in Fantasyland, we would rather try DL. I don't know the first thing about DL.

I think we will stay off property-any suggestions as to where?

Also, where is the best location/website, to purchase tickets from?

Thanks so much!

Start here for Hydroguy's tips for WDW vets visiting Disneyland

Most important keep in mind that DLR is not WDW and WDW is not DLR!! Two very different vacation experiences each with their own magical qualities.

We've never stayed onsite at DLR because of cost. There are only three resorts all priced similar to WDW's Deluxe hotels. There are numerous hotels around DLR, many in walking distance. We have a car so we tend to stay a few miles away where prices are lower.

What type of hotel are you looking for? Value, moderate, deluxe, resort?

Most of the area hotels will sell discounted tickets but the discounts aren't often that much. AAA has discounts if you are a member.

Welcome! This board will be a great help- there is a thread by Hydro guys about differences between the 2 places that helped me alot. I have been home 5 days from our 1st DL trip ... it was terrrific. I have been to WDW many times, most in the summer, so Southern Cali in July was a treat! Fantasyland in DL was wonderful.... one of my favorite things at DL. I liked the Paradise Pier area at DCA- reminded me of childhood places. I also have a new appreciation of CMs as I had visited Hershey Park earlier this summer and encountered miserable worker after miserable worker. I was with a large group and we went over a 5 day period and we all had similiar experiences. Disney, whether DL or WDW, is magical.

We got our tickets from AAA which included free parking at the Mickey & Friends lot which saved $15/day. We stayed at Marriot Towneplace Suites which was about 6 minutes from the garage. I know there are alot of people that like to stay within walking distance but I got a great rate on a very clean room with a full kitchen and free parking. BTW, I always stay onsite at WDW and use their transportation. Driving to the park was different for us in Cali but not an issue. There was a standard hotel pool area at this hotel so if you have small kids another hotel with more kid oriented pool area (like HoJo) might be better!

Happy Planning!

We like to stay at Candy Cane Inn. It is an 8-12 min. walk depending on how tired you are. ;) You can see a review with pics in my sig. Also is a review of Embassy Suites South which we also loved but is too far to walk to DRL from. Walking distance is nice so that you can go back for an afternoon nap. I've seen other people post their review on hotels recently so you should check those out too.

You can check out Disneyland.com to see what attractions, shows and restaurants are there. The primary thing you might be disappointed with is that WDW, ultimately, has more attractions than DLR. BUT, the are spread thin compared to DLR. DLR is more "compacted" fun giving you less downtime. I'll touch on a few differences here.

Think of DLR as the Magic Kingdom and MGM, with nothing from Epcot or Animal Kingdom. The exception is that DLR has a different version of the Dinosaur ride from Animal Kingdom called Indiana Jones, and both have the Sorin' ride from Epcot. Also, DLR is missing some of the fun ride from MGM like the one that takes you through Wizard of Oz, etc. and the fun Little Mermaid show. From Magic Kingdom, instead of the Swiss Family Robinson Tree, you have the tree from Disney's Tarzan. No people mover, no carousel of tomorrow, and no Stitch ride. Disneyland's castle is smaller and, consequently, doesn't have a restaurant inside.

Disneyland's Fantasyland, however, puts WDW's to shame. You won't be disappointed there. Especially Small World. You'll be thrilled with Small Worlds brilliance at DLR. Also, Fantasmic at DLR isn't shown in its own theater. I really like this, because it gives the show a significantly more magical, intimate feel. If you like things super organized and structured, you might like MGM's theater better. But if you have an adventerous steak and like to see the park, itself, turn to the stage, you'll prefer DL's presentation. And, of course, the Haunted Mansion is better if only for the fact that the room ACTUALLY STRECTHES (well, you know..) instead of pictures that roll giving an obviously false appearance. Remember, too, that Disneyland is the original! There's a lot of history there.

Check out the DL website and browse what they've got. I hope I haven't made this too long and hope you can appreciate DLR for what it is and not worry too much about what it isn't.

Many people make that comparison but it should be noted that DLR has about 80% of the rides and attractions in two parks that WDW has in four. DCA does have Bugs Life which is found in AK as well as several attractions not found anywhere in WDW.

It is actually more like 90%. :)
