Private school

:thumbsup2 we live in Central IL, and just put dd12 in the 6th grade into private Christian school it's 4,000 a year , a 500.00 building fee, 100.00 to reapply for school, 100.00 save your spot for next year.

The school our girls attend will be $7805 for dd in the 1st grade with a $400 building fee and a $300 supply fee. $3290 for dd Pre-K 4 M/W/F mornings, with a $100 building fee, and a $150 supply fee. So my total bill is a little over $12,000, but no fundraising throughout the year. It is a little expensive, but our local public schools really are a big mess.

reading some of the tuition amounts..

our "kids" have graduated from HS already DS in 1999 and DD in 2002

but I remember well the years of tuition.

It steadly went up about 300 to 400 per year per person!

by the time DD tuition was 6500/pupil plus books another 300-400 yikes!!

we were lucky though if you were an Archdiacion (sp) of the city of Milwaukee we got a 20% discount--well DH taught religionous ed at our chuch and that quailified us for the discount!!!

we didnt have much choice in where to send the kids to school Milwaukee Public was totally worthless!!!! so our only other choice was private and pay the tution without any help or break (except for the teaching)

When DS graduated there was a girl in his class that was the last of 13 kids to go through Pius!!!!!!

I cant even imangine raising 13 kids let alone sending them to private school!!!!

The school awarded the parents with a plaque with all the kids and graduating years on it!! That was pretty nice but gee 13 kids!!!!!

For DD in K we are paying $3800, that jumps to $5850 next year and currently high school is $6200. The public school she would attend is horrid! (The students are failing standardized tests and parents are pulling them out. The solution, the raised my taxes $300 a year and built a new football field. The milage vote passed by less than 20 votes. Like that would change a parents mind?!)

We do have tuition prebuy. It splits tuition into 100 certificates that you buy (so I am buying them at $62 a piece for high school. ) because tuition keeps rising if I prebuy and hopefully by the time she is in high school I would have enough certificates to take care of the most expensive years as tuition will keep rising about $200 a year.

We pay about $9000 a year for 2 in christian elementary. We have a sliding scale, I believe 3 is around $11200. Our school does a ton of fundraising and has an awesome special needs program!

We pay $3000/year for our DD7 at our private Christian school. Half-day tuition (PreK and K only) is $2000. The school offers a 10% discount for each additional child, so DS will one day save us a whopping $300/year. :)

We pay $800/month for DS in Kindergarten, and DD who does 3-1/2 days in pre K. DS will be going to Catholic school next year and his tuition will be $2600/year. That is half of what we paid for Kindergarten.

It is expensive and we make sacrifices to send them to private school but we feel it it necessary. We are very satisfied withthe education they are receiving.

My brother's three kids go to two private independant schools, grades pre-K, K, and 2. Total cost this school year was $42,000. Next year it goes up another $3,000. This is only for tuition. Books, lunch, extra-curricular activities (piano, dance, etc.) cost more. Paying this much tuition sucks but the public schools where he lives are so bad that it's either private school or home school.

just under $3000 / year for kindergarten. They charge just enough to keep the lights on and pay the bills. This is a catholic school.

My 2 oldest ds are 10th and 12th graders and go to a private christian school. For the both of them I pay $10,600, its going up $500 total next year. They also hit us up for the non public books. That was was another $500. Little ds goes to a christian school associated with our church. He is in 8th grade and we pay about $4,600 for him. My mom passed away and we sold her house so we are using the money from that. Our school district here is very unsafe etc. The kids never have homework, etc. Just not a good learning enviornment. I dont know about the oldest ds school, but the younger ones you can ask for financial aid and the most they give you is 1/2 off. I was on the committee that reviewed those applications for a while.

We have 2 of our 3 kids in private Christian school here in SW VA. The cost for the two (first and fifth) is $3400 per year. Thats for both!! Seeing some of those high private school costs- I feel blessed. We pay about $180-$200 per child for books each year and registration is $150 per child per year. We have 2 fundraisers per year. No penalty for not raising "enough". Our school only goes up to 8th grade, so oldest DD16 (10th grade) is in public school.

OK, now I know I must live on a different planet. We have an 8th grader at a private prep school, tuition next year will be $29,500. (day student). That doesn't include books or bus and inevitably we are still nickled and dimed for other things through the year. My older son just graduated from another school in the same league (all boys) where tuition was a relative bargain at $18,000/year! Hopefully my younger son will attend that same school however it is intensely competitive admissions (less than 10% of those who apply are accepted). On top of this all my oldest is a freshman in college at $43,500./ year or thereabouts. If I ever added up all of what I will spend by the time they graduate from college I'm not sure I could handle it!!!!

jim and meesie,
I hear you! Mine are in private prep pn RI. Comparable tuitions (see earlier post), no boarding here we are just a day school. We could lbe sports rivals!

jim and meesie,

It's not hard to believe that you pay nearly $30,000 tuition for your son. Because the Boston public school system isn't great, my sister was looking for a private high school in the Boston area and all of the schools except one she applied to had a tuition of about $30,000. She eventually went to one right in Boston for about $11,000 a year.

Here in DE we will pay $ 5745.00 for my DD in 6th grade next yearan 11% tuition increase from this past year. Book fee is included but we have 2 major fundraisers a year plus a $ 250.00 yearly development fee and still field trips lunches etc etc but it is the best money spent because our schools here are not that great ( DE has the most private/parachoial schools per capita in the nation ) and not only does my daughter get a wonderful education hers is a Christian school that reinforces our faith in every sub. as well as in bible class. Not only that but since she has been there starting @ 1st grade everyone knows everyone and parent teacher communication is the best. I leave her everyday knowing she is learning and being loved by all around her ( and believe me she's not easy to love everyday ). Next year when she moves to the upper school I know things will change as she 's growing up but
trust that the feeling continues.

DS 15 will be attending a prep school in the fall that’s located 6 hours away from us at annual cost of $4,000 per year for Maine residents. Its a school where he boards and comes homes every 3 weeks for 5-6 day weekends. Non residents’ tuition is $30,000 a year.

The difference is that most of the people posting here have their children in parochial schools. These are heavily subsidized by whatever religious group is running them. Non-denominational prep schools tend to cost a lot more. that is why the tuition I gave was so much more than most people here are paying. However, when my older DD was in 3 and 4 grade and went to school in Manhattan her tuition alone (nothing else) was close to $20,000. Add in transportaion and books and we are talking about $27,000 for a grade schooler.

My DD11 goes to a Christian school and we pay $3,400.00 per year tuition, $160.00 registration, $275.00 books, plus $25.00 - $50.00 per after school activity (honor choir & soccer, ect.). They offer a catered school lunch for $3.50 per day, but she always takes her lunch. There are 2 fund raisers per year, selling candy and wrapping paper, plus a large carnival. We are supposed to volunteer 2 hours per month at the school, and buy $100.00 per month in Scrip. She has been in a Christian school since pre-school and would never go to a public school in the area we live in.

Yes, we do have several fund-raisers a year...carnival, book fair, read-a-thon, and the main one in which each family just contributes an additional dollar amount to the school fund. It's a great school, and unfortunately for us, one of the only good options (we feel the best!) The public school system here is in deplorable shape. The real kicker is that we have extremely high property taxes ($6500) of which 80% is school tax!!!!

Your property taxes sound wonderful to me!! Property taxes on my home are $11,000 per year. We add almost $1000 per month to our mortgage payment...yikes!!! About $8000 of that goes to our school system (although, those kids still fundraise a LOT), which is actually an excellent school system.

My dd goes to a private pre-school, which is $3800 for 5 days (3 hrs per day), and will jump to about $6500 for kindergarten. However, I feel it is definitely worth it, as the private K is montessori based, and encourages the kids to "learn at their own pace". And, the private school does CONSTANT fundraising...but, not for tuition breaks...for "improvements" and additional buildings (the waitlist for this school is insane...I'm not sure how we managed to get in).

It is interesting to see how much schools vary. When we were looking at moving to Dallas, many of the school districts we were looking at were awful. So, I began to look at private schools....the one I really wanted to send dd to was $36,000 per year!!! Okay....that is DEFINITELY out of our price range!!!

My dd's paroical elementary school is $2550, in-parish fees. Next yr ds will join her and fees will be I believe $3250. We are fortunate to be in-parish because if we were out-of-parish the cost of 1 child is higher than the cost of in-parish for 2 kids.
