Privacy Gripe

I agree with Kathleena,

How is it an "invasion of privacy" when it is all info they already have on file, and we are just verifying it? It's not like we're giving them new info, it is info that any MS rep can call up on their screen.

The fact that the MS reps can call up all of that information is an invasion of privacy. Especially the SSN. Most companies are too lazy to create a unique id for their members/customers/patients. Really ticks me off.

I wish years ago that I had refused to give my SSN to anyone. Now it is too late (for the most part).

I don't ever remember having to give an SS #. I give the member # and phone #.

I made a reservation for OKW last week and they did ask for the last 4 #'s of my social security # after I gave my member #. It really doesn't bother me. It's possible only those last 4 numbers are made available to MS reps, so they would not have access to your full #.

It is indeed the last 4 #'s of your social security # that they request. I can accept that. But when they insisted on knowing the shoe sizes of everyone in my family they CROSSED THE LINE! If it weren't for the chance of getting my hands on one of those adorable little Palmolive bottles I swear I'd just give my points away.

It was the request for a sample of my DNA that put me over the edge.

:jester:

When I originally read this post I was not going to respond because I worked for a company that has appx 3000 call center employees and I know that they have to ask many security questions. However, I made a ressie on DCL today and when they asked for my name the advised me that they already had the names and ages of my kids. I had called previously and checked rates and didn't give them any info. I had also called DVC and asked them to chekc availability. So I am wondering if the DVC rep provided them the info on my family! Is this really a big deal? I don't know. I know companies can share you NPPI and usually share this info within their subs, however, I don't like the fact that Disney seems to have done this to me!

Very interesting responses. I think next time they ask for a soc number, even partial, I'll tell them that privacy prohibts me from giving that out. Let's see what happens then.

I have no problem with it. I mean in this day and age anyone with a computer and a basic knowledge of using one
can find out anything they need to know about anyone. Why would I care if DVC knows the same info everyone else has access to.

If you have ever stayed with Disney or DVC your info is now on file.

I had made a 1 night AP reservation at OKW in May to go with my points reservation. At the time of the reservation, I planned to take my niece, Stephanie, along with my mom. Stephanie didn't end up going, but I didn't take her name off the reservation (it was last minute). I made a code reservation for October at BWI and when I said 2 adults, the cm said "what about Stephanie?". That kind of shocked me. I didn't think I would have to explain why I wasn't including her.

I agree. I know that my name, address and phone number are all info for public record. I have no problem giving that info. But my SSN is not public information and everyone does not have access to it. My DVC membership number is not availible to just anyone, only DVC, so I have no problem with them using that number as a unique ID (with DVC).

But it is the combination of someone having your name, address, phone number and SSN that is not good. It can be used in ID theft. And I think we have all heard the horror stories of people that have used that information to steal IDs.

I am glad that for those who have given their SSN that they only have the last 4 digits (or at least I hope that MS only has that info and not the whole number).

I am not paranoid. It is just that all of these people are out to get me ::yes:: :earseek:  .

To those posters objecting to giving the last four numbers of their SSN, here's what I don't understand. The CM at MS already HAS the last 4 numbers of your SSN, they are just verifying it. So what new info are you giving out that is making you paranoid?

Sorry if I am thick headed, but I just don't understand the thought process of not giving out a number that is right there on the computer screen of whoever is taking your ressie. Again I may sound like a broken record, but the CM is just verifying to be sure You are really You. What am I missing?

I do not mind all of the questions. They're verifying the information anyway, since they have it in front of them.

I called Monday and Tuesday this past week to make reservations and they asked all the previously mentioned questions on Monday. I thought perhaps they periodically update all information to make sure no one has moved, etc..., but when I called Tuesday they asked the very same set of questions so I assumed that this was now standard procedure. Whenever I have emailed MS, I've only given my member number. Maybe those who would rather not give out all that information over the phone might feel more comfortable contact MS through the email. It takes a little longer, but maybe you might feel a little more secure.

In what way? Isn't it better to verify information than not? I am willing to bet everyone here upset about this would be DOUBLY upset if MS wasn't thorough and someone who was unauthorized was able to use your account.

In my case (and I am one of the major objectors to the 'no SSN' will be given out) MS, DVC, WDW does not have, and never did have my SSN. Trust me, I do not hand that out freely.

Did you finance your DVC membership through the Disney financing? If yes, then of course they have your SSN. In fact, I'm willing to bet it may be required that at least one operating arm of Disney/DVC has your SSN...they may be required by law to have it on file for tax purposes, DVC Dues billings, or some other financial reason. In fact, don't many high dollar purchases require a disclosure of the SSN as part of the internal revenue tax code, to try to catch those that cheat on their income taxes?

In fact, many folks that buy resales and haven't received their mem numbers yet can call MS to see if they are in the system. They look it up by SSN, so it must be disclosed on the paperwork somewhere.

That's nothing, I made ressies for 7 additional family members and they are all still under my "profile" and they "cannot" remove them. None of them live with me and I will probably never pay for another trip for any of them so the likelyhood of them ever going again is probably never. But I get the same questions and answers every time I call CRO. And they say they cannot remove them.

After we bought our resale, I called MS to see whether we were in the system. They only asked for my name, address, and phone #. They subsequently gave me my membership # and all of the PINs, etc., that I needed to check out the DVC website. They also, without any request from me whatsoever, gave me my husband's website access PINs.

Never did they ask for my SS# or DH's SS#.

This was in August, btw.

Nope, I did not finance thru DVC. In fact, I remember sitting there filling out the paperwork and the sales guy asked us for our SSNs. We both asked why they needed it. He then sat there for a minute and said that he actually didn't need it (but if we had financed he would have). A year or so later I called to make a reservation thru MS. They asked for my SSN and I said no, I will not give that info and she said that she noticed that it was not in the system anyway.

I make issue of this because if I had given it to begin with, it would have been in the system. I hope people understand that just because they ask you for it, you do not have to give it to them (unless of course you finance thru them).
