Ok, so I've just broken both of my wrists in my 5 year old daughters sports day Dad's race. One minor, one still minor but needs surgery tomorrow. Both in casts for at least 6 weeks.

We fly the 5th August and I'm sole driver, whaddya think.

Anyone got experience of driving, will they even let me take the car?

Might need to pay for inlaws to come lol

What a nightmare for you :sad2:

Do you think you will even be insured to drive - I'd be doubtful.

Poor you........... :grouphug: No idea about the driving but just feeling awfully sorry for you (and the rest of the family who will be worried for you and their holiday). Have some pixiedust. pixiedust:

Oh deary me, you poor thing :goodvibes

I thought we had it bad, DD1 broke her wrist (but not badly) just over 2 weeks ago at school, her cast is due off on July 18th..... we are hopeful that it will be fully mended when the cast comes off....

I know if something happened to DH I would have to bite the bullet and drive but can't say I would be over the moon at the thought, I've never driven whilst on hols, I can picture the tailbacks I would cause!!! I know I would opt to take the in-laws rather than cancel but I guess you will need to ask at the hospital about driving :confused3

Best wishes for your surgery tomorrow and hope you manage to sort things out :goodvibes

Thanks all, some more reading suggests I'm either knackered or it won't be an issue lol. Got to love armchair experts on the internet. Particularly yahoo answers which seems to be full of idiots!

Maybe I should ditch the villa and car and stay onsite. That could get jolly expensive for 4 weeks.

Think I'll be too nervous for the aqua duck now too, booo

Oh dear :( Terrible news!

I wonder if you could be a quick healer and that the casts would be off before flying? Here's hoping so! If not, I think you'd find it difficult to drive, but on the plus side, the car will more than likely be an automatic, so once in drive, you've no gear changes to worry about.

Plenty pixie dust in the mean-time and I hope the operation goes well :wizard:

OUCH!!
Can't help but I will be able to spot you at the airport now on August 5th :rotfl2: (if you are flying from MAN)

Oh you poor soul.My DB is a Emergency nurse practitioner. Have you got a colles fracture is that why you need surgery? He says explain to the consultant you are going away.As long as your casts are off they should let you have the car but obviously dont mention youve had both wrists in casts. It is not a chronic condition it is acute.Oh and take plenty of pain killers.Get a stress ball to do gentle exercises. At least cars are automatic over there:happytv: sorry.I broke my wrist in 1999 and remember driving and working in AE with it on.If that isnt breaking the law, health and safety I dont know what is:rotfl:Good luck.

And you'll see us at port canaverel as well, we get on the Dream as you get off I think on the 25th

Thanks for the tips crabbie, I'm not sure what its called, counted about 5-6 fractures in total most on the left. I drive an auto at home anyway as prefer them so pretty confident, it's just things like pushing strollers, carrying kids and suitcases etc that make me think the in laws might be a good idea.

DB thinks its called comminuted fracture. They will put a plate in whilst it heals.Make sure you tell immigration or else:lmao: As for the in laws defo a good idea.Being serious you need to be careful and not over do it or you will be in more trouble and do more damage

I don't know anything about fractures and driving, but I wanted to drop in and wish you speedy healing! I hope it all works out for your trip too - you are right, I wouldn't rely on the internet too heavily for an answer, perhaps ask your clinician when you go for surgery?

Poor bloke! Just stay on I-4, big , wide with no sharp corners and you might be OK! Good luck mate.

The main problem is that driving with a broken wrist/cast invalidates your car insurance as you are "not proper control".

There is also the safety factor to think of.

Just hire a taxi and save yourself the hassle.

That's fine for a couple of days but we're offsite in a villa for 4 weeks and also have a cruise to get to, not sure how feasible 4 weeks of taxis are.

The right arm should be ok by then, the left is going to be longer but might still be in a travel cast that can come off for driving. We'll see.

seems to be a lot of it around - my dd broke her wrist in a fall at school a few weeks ago - her cast comes off on Saturday (we fly 9th August so all sould be good by then)

good luck with your operation and your travel plans, hope you find a good solution (even if it involves the in-laws)

Don't know if anyone likes little updates but after the fantastic impression I got of the NHS on Wednesday and how nice everyone was it's going downhill now as obviously the waiting list managers get involved!

This is no judgement on all the front line people whatsoever, they were all great but after waiting all day yesterday and a fair chunk of today for a phone call telling me if and when i need surgery, I got a letter saying bring my dressing gown and slippers next Tuesday!

This sucks bottoms on a number of levels, my arm friggin hurts and waiting 6 days for surgery off the back of a visit to A&E seems crazy. Why couldn't anyone give me a ring, like for example, what the flip are they even going to do on Tuesday, no-one has discussed it with me yet! I'm self employed so every day off is costing a fortune.

...and finally and most importantly, there is no way in hell I'm getting a dressing gown or slippers!!! I'd look like something out of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.

I'm beginning to consider if we're even going to be going to Florida this year now.

Edit: Wayne, I think you'll have even more chance of recognising me, at this rate I'll be coming straight from hospital in a green gown!

What a hassle. Hope you get soted. Is there the consultant's secretary you can ring - i've had most success going down that route.

Don't pass on the dressing gown - the hospital gowns are open at the back!

Not a good look for the airport :rotfl2:

Thankfully I have little experience with hospitals, also being self employed its one of my worst nightmares with private healthcare being too expensive.

I even looked at it a fortnight ago thinking I really should sort something but how much you have to pay before you get any kind of cover is bonkers. So many policies seem to be NHS top ups or glorified cashback schemes. Frequently you have to wait something like 2 weeks before you can switch to private etc. It's more important for the big illnesses like Cancer etc I think.
