Princess Power - September 2016 Weight Loss and Lifestyle Change Challenge

I will do that Flossbolna. I get to Millenia Mall for shopping session! All my current jeans are from our last trip in 2014. We can get them here too but on much higher price.

Yey for the scale being down!

Yes, I know all about crazy jeans prices in Europe!! I have a standing order to buy two pairs of Levi's for my brother in law every time I am in the US. If I can get them at one of the outlets, the jeans are about 80% cheaper than what he would pay for them here in Europe! It is crazy!!

Happy Friday Everyone!

I was reading some interesting Disney facts about Sleeping Beauty last night – it was marketed as being 6 Years in the making – but it actually took even longer than that. Walt reportedly lost interest in it during the making process as he had bigger things on his mind …. Disneyland! – This is why DL got Sleeping Beauty’s Castle – although apparently for 4 years no knew whose castle it was until just before the movie came out when he put the story walk through in – some of those scenes didn’t make the movie in the end. It didn’t go so well at the box office and they re-released in cinemas several times over the years to generate interest and $$. This was the last Princess movie Disney made for some time ….. a long time really ….. would you believe about 30 years until The Little Mermaid?!

Aurora had 3 fairy godmothers to protect and guide her when she was growing up living with them known as Briar Rose. This got me thinking about wise women that might be in our lives who help us along the way. Sometimes they are family and are around for our whole lives other times they are friends – who we might have known for a long time, a short time or they may no longer be in your life but their presence helped you along your journey.

OOOOOOHHHH - because here is where it will be the most appreciated. I finished week 5 of the c25k today which mean I RAN for 20 minutes straight and didn't die!

That's awesome! Congrats! It's a great feeling :)

QOTD: Tell us about the women in your life that have helped you along the way.

My mom is my number one advocate and my best friend. I certainly wouldn't be where I am today without her. I go to my mom for advice constantly. I can't imagine how I would function without her. The other woman I couldn't live without is my BFF/soon to be ex-SIL. I swear that she is my soul mate. She talks me off the anxiety ledge almost daily. We are the same person and I love her dearly.

I think I might only have 1. My mom. Thankfully she is very young and should be around for a long time. She is only 57. Not sure what i would do if she wasn't around. I have to talk to her every day. She has been through a lot in her life. I am slowly learning things as time goes by. She is getting more vocal about her childhood recently and it wasn't the best. She was also had an abusive husband (my dad). She was strong enough to serve him herself with divorce papers after 2 years of marriage and be a single parent of an almost 2 year old and a new born (me). I look to he for strength and advise. She did get remarried when I was 4 and had another child. My brother is 4 years younger then me. They have been married for 33 years now.

She will always give me her honest opinion. I send her pictures all the time to make sure what I am wearing looks good. She will tell me that something doesn't look good because of my weight or even if it does not match (I am horrible at matching). She has been very encouraging when it comes to weight loss too. At times she can be tough on me about it but lately she has not been. She knows I am trying and she can see the difference.

*****
Well yesterday and today have been a little stressful. Since my grandfather has gone into an assisted living home my mom needed to find a home for his cat. She can't take him and neither can I because my step dad and husband are allergic. My aunt told my mom that she was going to call the vet on Monday to have the cat put to sleep because we haven't found a home yet. We found a home so the cat was saved. Well it didn't work out. There cats were attaching my grandpa's. We had yesterday to find a home before we were going to have to take her to a shelter. Luckily a co-worker of mine took her. We are really hoping this works out.

Yesterday's drive home from work was horrible. It normally takes me 30 minutes to get home and it took me 2 hours. we had a highway closed because a state trooper was hit and killed by a driver and another had a multi-car accident that closed that one. I am very thankful I was able to go home to my family when other were not able to. I have heard that there was another bad accident on another highway too at the same time. I am not sure what happened yesterday but people were driving like maniacs. Even on the side roads that I took home it was bad. I had drivers fly around me in the turning lane to then cut me off and others did this to then be stopped on train tracks. It was just a very crazy stressful drive. By the time I got home I had to turn around and leave with my mom to drop the cat off. So I really didn't get home until 7:30. I only needed about 2500 steps but was just done with the day and vegged out on the couch.

On top of all of this we are having some issues with my son's English class. He teacher has been on medical leave all year so far. She was in an accident and has a concussion. They have had different subs in there everyday. She now has a D in the class and I have no clue who to talk to about it. We get to see the kids grades as teachers input there grades on different papers. The program is showing that my son is missing 2 papers but he says he did them. I am talking to the team lead which his his math teacher and getting nowhere on who to talk to. My son even started crying to my husband while I was gone last night saying he is over worked. I will talk to him tonight and see what I can do to help him. I am starting to think the set up that they have with the 5th grades on a middle/high school type of schedule is not the best for this age. He has never been like this.

Well hopefully I get some answers today and I can make his day a little bit better. Have a great day everyone!

QOTD: Tell us about the women in your life that have helped you along the way.

Only women, huh? ;)

My mom and my wife are the two that jump out. While she can be over protective and very opinionated, she was a fantastic mother growing up and a great provider. She traveled a lot for work, so it was my dad and I a lot of the time once my brother was in college, but she never missed anything that was important.

My wife has now taken over my mom's role and I couldn't get through a week without her. She has been very supportive during the weight loss over the past year... couldn't have done it without her.

And, of course, there are all of you! You are the ones that have to listen to all my weight loss ramblings. I know how painful it can be - and my wife does too!

Had a good night last night. Thursday's practices are always a little shorter and after dinner I went for an impromptu 3 mile run. It felt good. I felt somewhat fast (for me) and my time was a few minutes lower than it has ever been... and I still had some left in the tank. I feel like I could have done better if I wanted to push it. Thinking I might try a 10 mile run again this weekend. It's been a while since I've gone over 6, but last night has me motivated.

QOTD: Tell us about the women in your life that have helped you along the way.

There are of course my mother and my sister. My mother always encouraged me to not be shy and do things that were a challenge. And my sister is the best person to get me out of my bad moods - and tell me the honest truth about what I am doing wrong when I do things wrong.

Besides that my "three fairy godmothers" were definitely my three friends in college. I know you have heard the stories a million times already. But these three who have always been active and thin (even in their mid-forties now after three kids all three of them are thin without doing anything unhealthy to stay that way) kept encouraging me to tackle my weight issues. I learned a lot from them on how to stay active and how to eat healthy. And they never let me feel like an outsider because I was different, but encouraged me by taking me along to their fitness classes and things like that.

And finally my ex-boyfriends mother (I am still friends with him and his mother today) who in the late nineties encouraged me to give running a try.

Unfortunately I didn't have a good example to follow or lean on in my Mother. When I was in my early 40's living in Chicago, I was involved in a women's group that was really my first exposure to nurturing and mothering. I also worked with a therapist at that time to start healing and putting things back together. When I moved back to Seattle I lost those connections.

A couple years ago I joined Sisters on the Fly, a national women's camping group, to start to reconnect. This is a very powerful group of inspiring take charge women and I am learning so much from them.

I don't know what I'd do without my mom. Her and my husband are always the first two I talk to about everything! She's always honest, she always supportive and she's always there when I need help.

After I started running I found that I had built a "tribe" of women friends who also run and they are my other support system that I rely on.

My grandmother was my biggest cheerleader through my childhood and it was so sad to lose her when I was 14. We were super close and she did so much for me as a kid that it isn't until I look back that I fully understand the impact of her guidance, wisdom and love.

In relation to the background on Sleeping Beauty, I didn't realize the large gap between the princess movies. So basically a generation gap. Crazy!

That is so great the you and your ex SIL are still really good friends - that can be hard :-)

I think I might only have 1. My mom

She sounds like a strong lady - it takes a lot of courage to walk away from something like that.

She will always give me her honest opinion. I send her pictures all the time to make sure what I am wearing looks good. The matching thing sending her pictures made me laugh - that is cute! Great to hear she is doing a little better supporting the weight loss :-)

I am so glad it seems like you found a home for :cat: . That school situation sounds awful - I hate when there is inconsistency with their teachers that affects their learning.

That's what we are here for .... and we are happy to help your wife out by listening as well :D :rotfl: That's great you fitted in a run - good luck with your 10k on the weekend. Hey - did you have your TV interview yet?

There are of course my mother and my sister. My mother always encouraged me to not be shy and do things that were a challenge. And my sister is the best person to get me out of my bad moods - and tell me the honest truth about what I am doing wrong when I do things wrong.

You are surrounded by them you lucky thing! You should talk about those friends of yours often - they are the most amazing fairy godmothers - as we know not all girls are kind to each other and that is just a wonderful story.

A couple years ago I joined Sisters on the Fly, a national women's camping group, to start to reconnect. This is a very powerful group of inspiring take charge women and I am learning so much from them.

I am sorry that things weren't great with your mum growing up . I am very happy to hear that you have found a group of awesome women to be around :-)- feeling connected is a huge part of our wellbeing.

I don't know what I'd do without my mom. Her and my husband are always the first two I talk to about everything! She's always honest, she always supportive and she's always there when I need help.

After I started running I found that I had built a "tribe" of women friends who also run and they are my other support system that I rely on.

She sounds like a great mum. I am finding that friends to exercise with is a great way to help with our healthy life changes.

Crazy!

Good Grandmothers are wonderful - I am so glad you had her - losing them is hard - I lost my Grandmother when I was 17 - I only had the one grandparent her so that was it for me with grandparents.

On the Princess gap - I know I had no idea either - I am so glad they started making them again though - and you can really see the difference in the Princesses personalities in the newer ones to start to reflect modern times when you compare.

Well for me - my mum and I have a close relationship, she helps out in practical ways, we spend time together shopping or going to the movies etc. - she is 82 and her and I are the closest out of my siblings - and I live in constant fear and denial about what it will be like when I face the inevitable one day (I'm not saying it - but you know what I mean). She is there for me when things go wrong and will do anything to help - but she doesn't cope well with emotions and if I am having a big cry she tries to move me on from it quickly. She had a fairly hard childhood and upbringing and I think my grandmother would have been a hard mum at times as well - due to her bad marriage and things that had happened in her life (it can be such a flow on effect). So when I need a good cry and someone to listen I turn to my friends - I have one that I have known since Kindergarten - we don't talk regularly but that works for us and we have been there for each other through all of our crazy ups and downs, kids, marriages, divorces etc you name it. Family wise there have been lots of women around me - my grandmother - my great aunty (she was fantastic I always really liked her), and aunties from both sides of the family - even though quite a few of those family women have passed - there are times I feel their presence and know they are looking out for me. I have cousins who whilst I don't see them a lot these days - have been there for me over the years. One friend who I don't really see anymore but I will always be grateful for her friendship - as she helped me through my relationship break down and was the one who pushed me to go to university - some times you get the friend you need when you need them - if that makes sense.

It’s the weekend – yippee!
As weekends can be time for adventure let’s hear from one of our most adventurous Princess’s … Mulan.

86d565ad-e755-406e-9737-a6eed977dbe6.jpg

The Mulan story is based on a poem titled Ballad of Mulan. Mulan’s name was Hua Mulan. It is not certain when she lived but it is thought to have been during the Northern Wei Dynasty, which lasted from 386CE to 534CE. In the poem Hua Mulan was skilled with using weapons, riding horses and shooting arrows, the region in which she lived was known for practicing martial arts such as kung fu and sword use. There was no boy child in her family and she volunteered to join the army to spare her elderly father from doing so. According to legend she fought for 12 years and was offered 12 ranks during that time to reward her battle skills. In the end she turned down a title offered due to her battle prowess and returned to her family and quiet life. Disney’s version of Mulan was released in 1998, they added Mushu the dragon, and had Mulan learning her skills rather than already being skilled in them.

mulan.jpg

Asia is well known for many martial arts some include – Aikido, Hapkido, Judo Jiu Jitsu, Karate, Krav Maga, Kung Fu, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do and Tai Chi. I did some reading and some of the top 5 best health benefits from doing martial arts are: total body workout, stress relief, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, self-defence skills and improved self-confidence.
QOTD: Have you ever practiced a martial art? If yes – tell us about it – if no do you think you would ever try one – and which one?
Bonus: What adventures are you up to this weekend?

My son has done hapkido since he was 5 and my daughter did it for a short time. I would love for her to do it again just to learn self defense. The guy who does had one for adults so it did it for a year or two. I did it for two reasons self defense and just exercise. It is a lot of work. It was an hour and a half class. Some classes we would just do kicks. My legs hurt so bad for days after. He also had us do a lot of core work.

This weekend is going to be great. Other than eye therapy and grocery shopping I am doing nothing. First weekend like this in a long time.

Good morning all! I've been right out straight since I got back from the left coast and haven't even downloaded my pictures from my phone and camera yet! But I did get the suitcases emptied and put away before I got in bed on Wednesday... and believe me, I had to push myself to do that.... I was so tired and sleepy!

DD had today off and wanted to come home for a short visit, so after work yesterday I drove to my Mom's to meet DD halfway. Today is just laundry and a bit of sleeping in and relaxing and then we will stop by the dive shop to pick up her equipment that has been in for annual service and then continue south so she can get home tonight.

I totally forgot to weigh-in yesterday morning before I got dressed, so I will have to take today's number as my official one for the week. Not terrible, considering the treats that I indulged in while away! My "official" gain for the 8 days (including travel days) is 2.7 pounds. I'm still a hair under my official WW goal weight, so I'm not going to lament much..... but will work for the next two weeks to try and be sure those vacation pounds are gone by the end of the month, since my September goal was to end the month at the same number I started the month at!

Can't wait to have a bit of time to catch up with you all and share some pictures! Hopefully that will happen tomorrow!.......P

We had nice lunch out today and DH is playing tennis right now. If he wins he will go to a final so we are cheering for him. He was barely walking this year last time and on this day year ago we were suppose to be on romantic trip to Rome but had to cancel he had emergency procedure in a hospital. I forget that it was only year ago

While I am not the one playing, I count it as my adventure too!

I did yoga in the morning and my son football and swimming. Groceries shopping and cooking for the week tomorrow as DH will be away for the week so I need to prepare.

not very adventurous.

Happy Friday Everyone!

1 My granny was amazing and looked after me well when I lost my mum. She lost both of her children and both of her husbands but was never known as sad bitter woman. The whole village loved her. She was a tailor and always had the fashion channel on. Her studio was always busy. Many young girls/ladies would often visit for coffee chat and advice on what fabric to buy and what outfit to make. She had such kind heart, I will miss her forever. She thought me to be brave but also kind and have compassion for others.

2. My husband. He always say - "Nina, you can do anything you put your mind on. There is no stronger and more determent person than you." I know, he is a male but he does awesome job of being support

3. In terms of health and fitness it has to be my group of 6 women on facebook and this group as they have played big part of my successful weight loss.

Oooh those weekends are so needed sometimes! Its great that you have all done some martial arts at some stage - I have also tried to get DD interested at different time for the self-defence factors - but she has resisted so far.

But I did get the suitcases emptied and put away before I got in bed on Wednesday... and believe me, I had to push myself to do that.... I was so tired and sleepy!

One thing done! Unpacking and getting reorganised can be so hard after a great holiday.

DD had today off and wanted to come home for a short visit, so after work yesterday I drove to my Mom's to meet DD halfway

Can I say I just love to hear how your daughter likes to spend time with you. It kind of reminds me of the relationship with my mum and I - and I hope it continues with my DD in the future.

We had nice lunch out today and DH is playing tennis right now. If he wins he will go to a final so we are cheering for him. He was barely walking this year last time and on this day year ago we were suppose to be on romantic trip to Rome but had to cancel he had emergency procedure in a hospital. Isn't it amazing what difference a year can make? So glad to hear he is doing so well.

Women of certain generations are just amazing aren't they? The hardships some of them lived through but kept a positive attitude is inspiring. I am so worried I will turn into one of those bitter, sad women one day,

We have had limited adventures this weekend - as DS15 recovers from his big adventure last week lol. We almost forgot Hockey end of season celebrations yesterday - I was on the could with DD and she said to me "aren't you glad we don't have hockey anymore?" and it just made my brain go hockey! OMG its presentation day! Luckily it was just near our house (we walked there) and we weren't all that late haha. Today it is raining - but I was just saying to DS15 in the car while dropping him to work as I watched others walking/running in the rain - that I think I really just need to commit, restart and just do it no matter the weather.

DS15 did Karate for a few years - but as he moved up in belt where he was doing it didn't have that many kids his age and he would have had to start sparring with men. He liked doing the formation practice but he just isn't aggressive enough to enjoy the sparring - so he gave it away. I tried it many years ago for a short while - mostly to get some of the self-defence basics. I will say that it did help my son with self-confidence and strength - he had one 'friend' that used to think he could get at DS15 until he realised that DDS15 had gotten stronger and was more willing to get him back - thankfully they went to different high schools and that friendship ended - my son tried a few times to distance himself but the other kid just wouldn't go away (as he had no-one else).

I would like to get the twins into it at some stage - just so they have some basic self-defence skills for when they are older and going out. I just don't think I have it in me to try it again lol - maybe Thai Chi??
