I've never been on Primeval Whirl, but I would compare it to something we have at the Jersey shore--it's a ride called the "Crazy Mouse." It's a pretty tame roller coaster-like ride with some hills and dips. The ride cars are a circular shape which allows the car to spin as it moves along the track and moves around corners. It's a fun ride, but not something I would race to or get there early for. It would be a good family ride.
I think that explains it best.
It is a fun ride. We really liked it.
My son was not able to go on it because of the 48" height requirement but I know he would have loved it.
It really isn't scary at all
I agree with previous posters - I videoed it (just to make fun of my sister squealing throughout the entire thing) and showed it to a family last weekend who is (checks watch) currently landing at Orlando International. The family compared it to a ride called "Mouse Trap" they had ridden in, I think, Pennsylvania.
I rode PW last trip and I would compare it to a night of heavy drinking. I was sick with a headache when I got off. However, my DD11, thought it was a blast. As long as you don't mind spinning I think it isn't too scary.
We waltzed up to it last October thinking "It's in this cheesy, kiddie dino-land, it must be a piece-of-cake kid's ride."
That is until the CM stopped my DS 5 and measured him. He was about 1/2" too short. He was absolutely crushed. I'm talking huge tears, and the crying where they look like their crying, but there isn't a sound...at first. I know the CM was just doing their job, but my instinct was to inflict harm. It passed.
In a way, I think I booked the FTP specifically to get back down there and get him on this thing.
I still don't understand the height requirement for the ride. It is extremely tame and if a kid can do the teacups they could do PW too. That being said it is really fun.
I'm 28, and I absolutely loved PW. It is a great throwback to the mouse coasters from state fairs. PW was probably the most pleasant surprise during my trip to WDW last year.

I am not sure on the height requirement either.
My son (who was 43.5" last month) went on ToT, Test Track, Dinosaur, Splash Mountain, etc.
He really wanted to go on Primevil Whirl but was WAY too short for it.
I can see having a 40" requirement or even a 44" requirement, but I think 48" seems a little high. JMO
