Primary walk-around lenses

Just noticed there were boards below the planning boards. What a little scrolling will do for you huh?

So glad I scrolled . . . I was planning on leaving my 50 fixed at home. EEK! I've primarily used it for portrait shots. Hmmm . . .will have to be rethinking that one.

That is definately my night-time walk around lens.

I also agree it works- I used the active mode on my 18-200vr on KS and was impressed how many keepers I had.

Love to see them. Would you mind posting some here or giving us a link? Were there any situations that you found the 18-200vr didn't work for you? I was going to use it as my only lens during the day.

18-200vr is great for most daytime outside stuff. Not really suited for night and/or dark rides or shows. Here are some I was talking about from KS. Most were shot at 200mm. Lighting was very harsh but it gives you an example of how the VR helps on a very bumpy ride. I would say maybe 5-10% of the shots had any kind of motion blur. The shots I took with my Tamron 18-200 last year on the same ride were maybe 50-50 at best.

Nice shots Jeff! I can't wait to try out the 70-300mm VR when we go to Disney in November.

For a walk-around I now have the 18-135mm. Not quite the 18-200, but much much less expensive.

As for the poster who mentioned the 50mm prime. Definately take it. Great for indoor rides like IASM, GMR, PotC, etc. that don't allow flashes. Set it on aperture priority to f/2.8 or bigger (I just used f/1.8) and bump your ISO to 1600 and you should get some decent if not very good shutter speeds.

It also great for SpectroMagic. That can be hard to photograph and with this lens and no flash you get much better colors (same settings as above).

I probably use the 24-70f/2.8 EX the most, but a close second is the Canon 70-200f/2.8L.

Now I'm really excited to take my 18-200VR to AK in May.

It's a buddy of mine from out here in the SF Bay Area.

I do like the IQ/Range of the Sigma, but the 70-200 is a Canon L Series lens, and it's absolutely amazing. I must say though, the Sigma does a good job of keeping up. Wide open, they're very similar, but the AF on the L series is faster and quieter, and the IQ is slightly better.

With that said, the photo quality is really nice on both. From this weekend:
