I really should start a blog about the loony tunes I hear from on Craiglist. One of my clients is looking to rehome a pony she rescued. I placed an ad on Craigslist for her since she is not computer savvy in any way...not sure she even has a computer! Naturally, since the ad contained the word FREE I have been inundated with e-mails from interested parties. Seriously, maybe 50+? Mind you, I put right in the ad that the pony's age is unknown, breed unknown, training uknown. She is a cute little mare though. She rescued it from a neglectful neighbor when it was half starved with hooves in terrible shape.

I've gotten the following responses:

How old is she? (pretty sure I said age uknown in the ad...) :confused3

I'm looking for a safe horse for my grandbabies to ride. (perhaps you should lookl for one with some kind of training then?)

How high can she jump? (I did say training unknown right?)

Has she ever been to a horse show? (What??? Is anybody reading the actual ad??)

Would she be suitable for my daughter? (Am I Kreskin? How should I know?? I don't even know what your daughter is capable of doing!)

What type of horse is he? (I said it was a mare, moron). :headache:

Many responders are looking for a companion for a horse they already have, which is perfect for her. My favorite response came a few minutes ago. Lady says she thinks the pony (Misty) would be a perfect buddy for their other horse who is all by himself. She goes on to say "if you would like a good home for Sweet Pea (which is what I am calling her) then please call me"

Lady you can name the pony whatever you want...AFTER you actually own it. You don't get to change it's name now. :sad2:

lol I hate CL. Let me add some of my goings on. I was trying to sell an older SUV and I had someone email me asking to BORROW it for the weekend to move. I also had someone offer to trade me stolen GPS units and cell phones in exchange. Um NO.

Lol. CL is full of crazies.

I'd be really, really careful -- there are people with rotten intentions who can present themselves very well in order to get something they want for free. I'd do a home check, at minimum, to make sure their story holds up.

You'd be amazed at the yarns people weave in order to try to get a dog from rescue... then you drive by where they say they live and there's no house there, or it's an apartment building and they said they had a fenced yard, etc.

Sounds like the pony's already had a hard life, so please don't place it for free without being really, really sure it's found a good home and not just somebody intending to flip it and sell it for cash.

My boyfriend put an ad on Craigslist for a free piano, and you wouldn't believe the nutjobs that contacted him. He had so many requests that he had to pick and choose, and then those (of course) flaked out. He made numerous appointments for people to come get it, and they just don't show up, or call him and ask him if he knows any piano movers, etc. He said he's going to wait a few weeks and then list it again, with a price of like $25 or something. He seems to think putting ANY price on will weed out the riff-raff.

Yes...we know. Not our first time at the rodeo ;) I just LOVE weeding out the crazies though.

Im scared to death to give anyone my home address... anytime I list something, I tell them Ill meet you LOL I just know Ill have someone get miffed that I didnt hold something for them, and then Ill have an instant stalker!~

Good luck rehoming the pony :(

My sister put her horse on CL for $200, he is a yearling stallion with good bloodlines, very social, but not at all trained yet. She got a number of scam emails asking if the "product" was still available, asking to purchase and asking her to take him off CL until sale was complete, which she did not agree to do. 2 weeks later she gets a cashier's check from the guy, but he has still not called about picking up the horse. She calls him and tells him she has another offer, and is sending his check back, he wants her to cash it and Western Union the cash to him!:rotfl:

That's awesome!

Hey OP....

I'm out of town but can I have my secretary send you a certified check via overnight mail? I'll have my moving company contact you and arrange for a pick-up. :rolleyes1

No way, REALLY? Awww, that'd be awesome! :lmao:

OP, I am LOL here at my desk at work. Some people are just different, aren't they? :rolleyes1

And I just have to say, I LOVE the pics on your signature. They make me crack up every time! :lmao:

Tons of crazies out there. On the other side of the coin, this site "itemnotasdescribed.com" is hysterical. It lists things that people are trying to give away/sale on Craigslist that they really have no business passing on to another person.

I think the mattresses are the worst.

Or take it to the local auction house to sell as a killer.

The place where I boarded my horses, a well known show barn at that, also had a sleezy side market of buying up really cheap/free horses and hauling them down to auction to sell to slaughter houses. The owners had a great spiel going - show barn, use for lessons, give to some needy student who would love the horse, etc.

Haven't been around it for awhile, so don't even know if these auctions still exist, but I would definitely put some kind of price on the pony and do a very, very thorough check of the home it is going to.

It's illegal to sell horses for slaughter in the US now.... which is why the bottom fell out of the horse market.

Can the pony be shipped to Nigeria? I reently found out I have a relative who is a Nigerian prince. :cool1: He'd love the pony! :yay:

There are many reasons the bottom fell out of the market (sky-rocketing corn prices caused feed prices to sky-rocket...a drought year before last caused hay prices to soar...and the tanking of the economy in general). HOrses are too expensive for many people now.

The kill-buyers just ship the horses to Mexico and Canada.

Me too! We must be related! My prince-relative has sadly passed away though. I am planning on using the inheritance to buy into DVC. You want in? We can adopt Jennasis's client's pony and board her at Ft. Wilderness.:rotfl2:
