For those who were recently in Disney....How much is it for a Pressed Penny now?


How much do you normally Bring in Quaters and Pennys?

I would like to collect as many as I can.

They still cost 2 quarters to press your penny.

My whole family oves to do those so we usually travel with at least a roll of quaters.

There where some places it cost $1 last year to press pennies! I can't remember which locations, but I remember thinkin' it was a rip off!

I know it costs $1.25 to press a quarter, is that what you mean? I have 3 of those - and agree with you - bit of a rip off. However, pressed pennies cost 51 cents. I have a change "sock" filled with shiny new pennies (I prefer the shiny ones as opposed to the "older" ones) and am ready to roll - however, I have 4 months and 4 days to wait before said rolling starts!!!

Last October we took our 2 DDs to the World for their first time. We had already started a pressed penny collection for them, but we also knew, that there were a ton of machines at WDW. We brought 1 roll of pennies and 2 rolls of quarters.

At check in at Ft. Wilderness there was a penny machine. When the CM who checked us in noticed that we had visited the penny machine, he printed out a listing of all pressed coin machines in the world. It noted their location, type of coin pressed, and the cost.

I use old prescription vials and put 2 quarters, penny, 2 quarters, penny, repeat.

If I remember correctly the WDW penny collection books hold 36 pressed pennies and 6 pressed quarters.

We used the mini-M&M cases for the quarter, quarter, penny thing. My DNiece brought 1, I brought 2 and we were still scrambing for change....we were trying to fill the pressed penny books and probably had 16 or so empty slots by the end of the trip. So, bring more quarters and pennies then you think you'll possibly need! We did the pressed penny for each country in Epcot as well as my niece doing the passport at the Kidcots and I don't think she would have liked the World Showcase without that.

I'm not pressed penny collector but on our last trip in January my DFIL said he really liked to see Donald Duck screaming, so when I found a machine that made a screaming Donald Duck I couldn't resist getting one for may DFIL.

We went last year for our first WDW vacation so we kinda over did things But we do not regret anything... we spent what we could afford. This year however, the kids are really excited about adding to their collection of pressed pennies. We have been saving our shiny new pennies for just this. We also take a roll of quarters. We used one of those plastic (similar to the Mini MMs containers) but that you use at pools for your money. It worked perfectly! We will be having a somewhat tamer vacation this year.... and DDs have decided that the pressed pennies are a relatively cheap souvie.

I love collecting pressed pennies! Been doing it for well over a decade now, and I have 3 full Disney books. It's fun to look back at them and remember each trip! Soon I'll have even more!

I read (a long time ago) on another thread that OLD pennies are better (something about the "ingredients" in the penny being better for pressing) but I've noticed that many people reference bringing new pennies. Anyone have an answer on this or is it a matter of preference?

i pretty much think its a preference, each penny has its own pros and cons, and i guess it depends on what you want

When I went last Sept, I had a mix of new and old. It seemed to me that the new ones worked better actually.

We prefer the new pennies. However, the old ones clean up nicely with copper cleaner, a rag and a little elbow grease!!!

The reason why older pennies is because prior to 1982 the US mint used a 99% copper 1% zinc solution to create pennies. 1982 and after the Us mint changed their makeup to 97% zinc 3% copper in order to reduce costs.
So practically the new pennies are copper plated. So when they are "pressed" the copper plating stretches and will show the zinc underneath wich is subject to heavy corroding.
All the research I have done suggest to use pennies dated 1981 and before. DO NOT USE WHEAT PENNIES, why? could't tell ya
To clean those older pennies make a solution in a class bowl of 2 cups white viigar and 3 tablespoons of table salt. dilute the salt and place 20-30 pennies id the solution. you will see them almost instantly clean up. Then make a paste by combining baking soda and a little bit of water. Take the pennies out and use the paste to "polish" the pennies. They will look good as new in no time.
