My husband needs a new pair of prescription glasses. His broke

I remember someone posting here about a website that had a crazy deal...like 19.99 or something.

Can someone please direct me to that site?

Thanks so much!

Wow!! Thank you ALL so much! I am sure he will be able to find something on one of those websites. I truly appreciate it!

We have used and recommended zennioptical.com for years. No one we know has ever had a problem. We have saved so much money over the years!

Do those of you who have experience with these sites, have just simple prescriptions? I need progressive lenses and a few other issues so I'm wondering if this would work for me, sure would like to save the money!! Thanks.

I think that you will find that the selection of progressive and bifocal frames is limited and more expensive than the single-vision frames. But they are still cheaper than you would pay at a Lenscrafters. The only disadvantage would be that it is much easier to tweak the lenses for you if you bought them from your eye doctor or a local place. Trying to get a progressive lens just right can be tricky and not easily done online.

My mom orders progressive lenses from Zenni. WHen she first got her prescription they were over $700 at the eye doctor (no designer frames or anything like that). She spent about $60 on a pair from Zenni and no problems. She has ordered at least 3-4 more pairs and had no issues.

So maybe someone can help me.

My DD is having to wear glasses. Went to the eye Dr. and with ins. it is 200$

How do I get the prescription so I can get them from some place else? Does that make sense?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to this whole eye glasses thing and need to learn what to do if she breaks hers!

You ask for it. By law, they have to give it to you.

LensCrafters as kids glasses (frames and lenses) 50% off all the time. I paid 200 for my son's glasses but at was with transitions lenses.

Hs current pair becomes his backup pair. I also paid for their year long warranty.

Last year, I got him a basc pair for backup from BJ's for $60.

I work for an eye doctor. The doc will give you the prescription if you ask for it.

I would never buy glasses online. You could get away with it I suppose if you have a mild prescription.

If your prescription is stronger, if you have prism, if you wear bifocals (especially progressives) then I would steer clear of online suppliers.

When you look through your lenses, there is a central spot where you will see the best out of. That's why when you look towards the edges you will notice some distortion, especially if your prescription is strong. When you buy glasses in person, an optician will take these measurements.

If you do not wear bifocals and you must buy glasses online, here is what I would recommend.

1. Find the frames that you like first and make sure they fit. There is nothing worse than wearing glasses that don't fit you properly. They are uncomfortable. But there is no reason you can't find the glasses you like and then write down the manufacturer, name of frame, SIZE and then look for it cheaper. (Note: one size is not the same for all frames)

2. Just be honest and ask an optician for your PD number (pupillary distance). They won't like that you are buying them online but they know people will do it and would much rather you wear something made correctly. If you can't ask them, look up online how to do it and ask a family member to do it. You can't do it yourself and I wouldn't trust someone who is not a trained professional, but it's better than just guessing.

3. If your prescription is really strong, you have prism, or wear bifocals...just don't do it. You could buy a frame cheaper anywhere (making sure it fits first), but you are going to need an optician to measure the height for your bifocals in your frames. Buying online is a total guess. You might get lucky but it's not good odds.

ETA: One more thing. If you DO need progressive lenses or more complicated prescriptions, you do not have to buy them at your eye doctor. You can always take them to one of the cheapy eyeglass places in town. Just make sure you get someone fitting you who knows what they are doing, preferably a licensed optician. One thing to keep in mind, if you can afford to support your private doctor/optician, please do so. I imagine at some point they will all be out of business and everything will be left to the larger chains. We all know how that system works and it just is what it is nowadays. People buy stuff (anything) from bulk suppliers and then we all complain when there is no personalization.

Anyhoo....if you have a membership to the warehouse stores like Sams, Costco, BJs, etc. Those are great places to get what you need without spending a fortune.

Great info Bonniec. My husband and I are in the market for glasses and I was thinking of ordering on line to save money. I think I will look around locally.

Thanks

Here's a review I posted on another website about my experience with Zenni Optical::thumbsup2

DH and I both needed glasses, and they are so expensive we decided to try Zenni Optical .

We had our eye exam at our opthamologist and had him give us the prescriptions. There is a special number you need, a measurement the doctor should take. It's the PD number, you can't order online without it. It measures where your pupils are.

Ordering online was interesting. You upload a picture and "try on" different glasses. Glasses range anywhere from $6.95-$40, base price. There is an additional cost for things such as anti-glare coating ($5) and of course if you need a special prescription. It costs $4.95 to ship, whether you buy one pair or multiple pairs. We ordered a pair of glasses with progressive lenses for dh, a pair of glasses plus a pair of prescription sunglasses for me. For 3 pairs of glasses it cost us $115, including shipping. The big expense was dh's special lenses.

It took about 2 weeks for the glasses to arrive. They each came in a cheap but sturdy enough plastic case, with a cleaning cloth. They were shipped together in a padded shipping envelope.

DH doesn't like his glasses but it's mostly because he won't wear them. He doesn't like the progressive lenses. It's his issue, not a problem with the glasses.

I'm very happy with both of my pairs of glasses.

Funny story, I had to call the eye doctor to get dh's PD. The receptionist was asking me all about ordering online, etc. and wanted me to report back and let her know how I made out. I did end up calling her back but it was a few months later because I had wanted to use the glasses awhile before giving my review. She was very interested, and said she was just talking to somebody about it the day before.
