I will be leaving my current school for a new position. I am giving my boss 8 weeks and want to write a letter to the parents. I will also be letting the staff know, and want to let the parents know before they hear it from anyone else. All the kids in my room will be going off to Kindergarten a month after I leave. Anyone feel like helping with a letter to the parents?

Dear Parents

I wanted to be the first to let you know that I will be leaving XYZ school on XXXX date. It has truly been my pleasure to work with you and your children.

They have meant _______ to me and I will always think of each of them fondly.

I hope to see you and your child in town and look forward to hearing about their accomplishments as they grow up.

Wishing each of you all the best always,

Short and sweet--they don't need details

And if you know, maybe you can add a line like I am sure that you will love the new teacher Miss YYYY she is ________ and will be in the classroom beginning ZZZZZ.

First (if you haven't already done so), I would ask your boss if and when it's OK to send the letter to parents. Many times a change-in-staff letter will come from the school first, then the teacher sends out a personal note to parents.

I agree with keeping it short and sweet. Just say something like, "I am writing to let you know that I have resigned my position at X School to pursue other interests. I have enjoyed working with your kids and watching them grow over the past years. I wish each of them the best of luck in kindergarten." Signed, Ms. X

Unless your boss says it's OK, I wouldn't make any announcement about a new teacher. That's something for the school do to.

Will you have kids upset that you are leaving? I might wait until you are closer to leaving to announce it to parents.

Would you normally have "moved on" with the kids and taught them in Kindergarten? Why do you feel you need to send the parents a note?

That's what I'm not quite getting either. I mean, we've found out from the grapevine when teachers are leaving and sometimes it came up in conversation when talking to the teacher, but I don't think I've ever gotten or known someone who has gotten a letter announcing it...

This is something you need to work on in conjunction with the Administration.

Because she's leaving a month before the students move to the next grade -- the kids shouldn't be blindsided by just showing up one day to a new teacher for the rest of the year, if it can be avoided.

Has your boss asked you to write this letter? This is something you should do together.

If you do it, just keep it simple. No need to go into details about why or anything.

Do the kids not have summer break though? I kind of assumed that she's seeing the school year out. Unless she isn't in North America, I suppose...

Kind of odd she joined to just ask that.

I assumed it was some sort of year-round school program, because of the way the OP was worded

I agree that if the school year ends and the job transition occurs during a break, the letter seems unnecessary. I'd only send one if the kids will be showing up to class one day with a new teacher

Well the title says pre-school so I'm guessing it might be more of a daycare/preschool that goes all year round. But either way, I would let the boss notify parents first.

Let's see if I can answer everything:
my boss asked me to write a note to parents, so they don't "hear it through the grapevine"
we are a close-knit community school (so parents are a big part of every day things, decisions, etc and even the hiring of new teachers)and are year round
(I've been a lurker for ~I think years~ and was always blown away by people's responses to questions like these)
The plan is to not tell the kids too soon, but let them know, for sure.
Usually, months go by before a new teacher is hired, so no replacement can be announced before I leave.
Thanks for your advice.
