Why are people saying that??

My FIL called and said he heard it at work that Pres. Bush was declaring this Friday (12/26) a National Holiday. DH came home today and said the same thing . . .

Anyone know what the heck they are talking about? It's nowhere on the web that I can find or news . . .

What makes a "National Holiday"? Does that just mean all government offices will be closed?

I haven't heard anything like that....but with so many companies closing on 12/26 this year maybe your FIL and hubby are trying to push their bosses to go along. ;)

We could call it Wrestling Day since Canada's is Boxing Day. ;)

Normally when the President does that it is for the military and goverment employees, not the nation.

He did give them (government employees and military) the day off

Executive Order Closing of Executive Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government on Friday, December 26, 2003

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1. All executive branch departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Friday, December 26, 2003, the day after Christmas Day, except as provided in section 2 below.

Sec. 2. The heads of executive branch departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 26, 2003, for reasons of national security or defense or other public need.

Sec. 3. Friday, December 26, 2003, shall be considered as falling within the scope of Executive Order 11582 of February 11, 1971, and of 5 U.S.C. 5546 and 6103(b) and other similar statutes insofar as they relate to the pay and leave of employees of the United States.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Does that include the post office and banks? They are usually closed when the government is.

I don't think the executive order includes the post office. As for banks - I doubt it. They are normally only closed on "official" Federal holidays. It's probably up to the individual Bank owners/mangers but in these days of ATMs, direct deposits, etc, bankers' hours and holidays no longer seem to matter.

It's a holiday here & always has been............

Boxing Day is 26th December for some countries.

My hubby got a copy of that letter at work. He's getting it off as a payed holiday. (Lucky duck)
He works for the department of defense. He's what they call a materials handler. (He loads and stores munitions.)
:yo-yo:

my DH is in the Air Force, and they were given off on the 26th as a paid holiday!

Normally any time the Air Force personnel get a "day off" it's a paid day off - they are paid monthly. Taking out a day of pay would be a nightmare for the finance office ;) Also most Air Force people get one extra day off a month - the many bases I've been at call it a "Goal day" or something similiar, for reaching their flying goal, training goal, etc. They've been doing it for years. You can also count on having the day after Thanksgiving off and depending on what day of the week Christmas is then you might get the day before or the day after off. Most bases I've been at also go to minimum manning for holiday weeks, half the squadron/office/shop get off the week of Christmas without having to take leave and the other have gets off the week of New Year as long as you aren't leaving the area of the base. When Independence day is on a Thursday you normally end up having Friday off too, if it's on Tuesday you don't have to work on Monday. It was probably one of the things I missed the most about the Air Force when I retired - the amazing amount of time off especially when you factor in the 30 days paid vacation and all the Federal holidays. It is one of the best kept secrets of the Air Force.

DH is in the Navy and works for NATO and he has Friday off. I am a Government Service (GS) worker, I work for the Department of the Army and I have to work Friday, business as usual.

This week of Christmas DH nad everyone in his unit had to work one full day and the other two days are half days (until 12) and then Thursday and Friday are off. I have a half day today (Christmas Eve) and am off on Christmas day.

DH is Active Army and worked 1/2 days (until Noon) starting Monday until Tomorrow then he has Thursday thru Sunday off. Here (at West Point) the Post Commander usually makes it a 4 day weekend when there is a Thursday holiday :D

I would think that the post office would be closed and the workers get it off with pay OR the workers work and get paid holiday pay.

So far the post office hasn't told me anything but to work. And, come in early at that in my case! (We're a bit shorthanded) Would be nice, though......:)

Guess I should have clarified.. my DH is in the Air National Guard, activated in March for a year (he is a full timer, even in the guard). He is at a Guard Base, where they have to take leave to get the time off, although we do usually get a day for Christmas, either before or after. They don't get to take the whole week, unless they take leave. You are right, though, they do get a lot of time off, which we love! Merry Christmas all, and enjoy the free day, if you get it.
