Prenatal Vitamins Question

First let me say, congratulations!

Now onto business, if you do use a neti pot just be sure to follow the directions about using distilled water or previously boiled water (obviously wait for it to cool, I think those are the two options, but don't use just tap water). I'm sorry, I really don't want to give you something else to obsess over.

Granted I've never been pregnant, I've just had to sit through many classes on prenatal care. Folic acid is the biggie. Really your giving your child a great start with just the changes you've written about here.

Thank you :)

Also, I seem to have developed a cold in the past few days-no fever but lots of sneezing, very runny nose, etc... I have not taken any OTC meds for it, nor do I plan to. I've just been drinking water and chicken rice soup. Should I be concerned about being sick so early in my pregnancy?

I don't think you need to worry, as long as you are staying hydradted and don't have a high fever. The water and soup sounds like a good plan! ;)

I can't swallow big pills to save my life and have taken the gummy kind for both pregnancies. I tried Flinstones, but my doctor said they didn't have enough "stuff" in them. They do make prescription chewable prenatals, but they taste terrible! That's an option though.

Good luck!

They really don't prescribe prenatals anymore unless there is a medical reason you can't take OTC. I don't know anyone who has been pregnant the last 5 years or so that had prescription ones.

I was taking prenatals in the month leading up to conceiving. I took the gummy prenatals until my morning (all day) sickness got too bad that I couldn't tolerate them anymore. Now I take 2 Flintstone chewables a day and an additional 1mg of folic acid. The folic acid was an rx because it is one tiny pill as the OTC ones wouldn't stay down for me. My insurance would not cover it since it was a "vitamin" but it was $4 so I could live with that.

I am finally starting to feel better and hoping to give the regular gummy prenatals another try in the next week or so.

I would just take the prenatals and maybe some extra folic acid. I really don't think there is enough folic acid in the prenatals and it is so important.

Prenatals made me constipated. My midwife suggested I eat Total cereal instead.

Congrats, OP, and good luck!

I don't know anyone that hasn't been prescribed prenatal (prescription) vitamins while pregnant or TTC :confused3

I am also pregnant with my first and I have been taking RX prenatals since we began TTC, mine are also covered by insurance. I am allergic to fish and it's hard to find a quality OTC prenatal that does not contain any fish products but that isn't the reason I was prescribed these.

OP, Congrats!!

How much Vitamin D3 is the recommended amount during pregnancy?

Well, that's a good question and somewhat debatable. Best to ask for your doctors advice. But in general from what I read, many will aim for a testing level around 50ng/ml. Everyone is different but it might take 5000ius or as little as 1000ius a day to reach that desired level. Or is you live in the south, spending some time in the sun.

Some further information that might be of help. The BBC has been running articles on the problem of mothers and infants with low vitamin D3 levels.

Congratulations by the way!

"Vitamin D deficiency major problem in the UK and is linked with ‘sudden infant death’"

The BBC here in the UK has had a recent blitz on stories relating to vitamin D, particularly vitamin D deficiency in children and its potential to cause rickets (and the characteristic weakened, deformed bones prone to fracture). However, some doctors are suspicious that vitamin D deficiency may be an underlying factor in ‘sudden infant death’.

Here is a link to an item which aired yesterday on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. There are comments from individuals within this item that leave one with the distinct impression that many health professionals are unaware of the issue of vitamin D deficiency in children. A lawyer who represented parents who were wrongly accused killing their child (who after death was diagnosed with rickets) tells of how a senior radiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital (generally regarding as the UK’s ‘best’ children’s hospital) failed to recognise rickets or the importance of vitamin D.

The item features Dr Marta Cohen (from Sheffield Children’s Hospital) who has discovered vitamin D deficiency in 75 per cent of children who had died of sudden infant death syndrome. This does not mean that the vitamin D deficiency caused any or all of these deaths. Nevertheless, there are ways in which vitamin D deficiency might cause death, and it’s clearly valid for vitamin D deficiency to be considered in children who appear to have suffered abuse or have died suddenly.

Recently, the BBC featured paediatrician Dr Benjamin Jacobs who is seeing increasing numbers of children with rickets where he works at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital here in the UK (video below)....

Wait the two weeks and take what your doctor suggests.

Big suggestion: Back away from the computer when it comes to your baby's health and your pregnancy. Strangers on the internet have their own experiences, at this point you need to find professional advice.

I found out I was pregnant in my fourth month with my second and my son was born healthy (thank God!!). I didn't take one vitamin before then.

Take your time and listen to the professionals first, loved one second and friends/internet third or last.

 Congrats!
