Hello all. I have been planning a great trip for 5 of us, and just recently found out I am pregnant. If everything stays happy and healthy, I will be 5 mo at time of said trip. I know my Dr. wont be happy about me going and doing all the walking, so I've already considered a ecv.

I feel a little obnoxious posting on this tread where there are people with serious disabilities, but, I suppose my health and that of the baby are serious in there own right.

Do I have to get a HC accessable room to have enough room to store the thing at SSR in a studio? I can walk just fine, just not long distances for days on end.

Also, any tips from anyone else in this position would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Hmm, my Dr wouldn't worry about walking, but he would be concerned about when I was going(ie heat) and staying out of the hot tubs.

My neighbor had to use an ECV during her last pregnancy last summer, in grocery stores or Target. She was on semi bed rest, due to complications. Her DH would drop her off at the door and she would get the ECV.

I was witness to alot of "nasty" comments about her on the ECV as we teneded to go grocery shopping at about the same time.

Are all 5 of you going to be in that studio? I have never stayed in one(we get 2br villas for my gang) but I think it might be a tight sqeeze.

I think you can get them at the parks, so you don't have to bring it back to the room. Hopefully someone here with experience in ECV's will pipe in.:thumbsup2

SSR is a "resort" type set up(that's our "home") and depending on where you get your room there is some walking involved in getting to the Carriage House(where the resturants are) and the main pool.

I have gone thru all stages of pregnancy, 2 1/2 months, 5 1/2 months, 8 1/2 months. My dr never had a problem with it. Walking is good for you just pace yourself.

My suggestions- good walking shoes, eat, rest when you need to, do not try to do everything

You could always just rent ECV, I am not sure that it would fit with you guys.

Just remember if you do request an accessible room you could be taking it away from someone that has no choice but an accessible room.

I am not a Dr. so can't speak from a medical standpoint, but at 6 months pg, I was still walking over 2 miles a day every day. I was over 35 and they were watching me for gestational diabetes. I gave birth to a happy and healthy baby boy!!!

I would rent an ECV in the park if you find you need one. Also, I would not get a handicapped acessable room, leave those for the people that have mobility issues.

Have fun, make sure your rest and drink plenty of water. Also remember to get some souveniers of your trip for the baby, his/her first Disney trip!!!

I was there when I was 6 months pregnant in mid June. I did not need an ECV, we just paced ourselves. Make sure to take breaks, drink plenty of water and use common sense.

I would NOT request a handicap accessible room. I think that these should be reserved for those that need them. You can rent ECV's daily at the parks, if needed.

I have never been one that saw pregnancy as a disability and by your post neither do you.

But that's not the question. The question is will you need an ECV when it's trip time.

Only you will know if you need it to improve the quality of your trip. If you answer "yes" than go ahead and use one and don't worry about what others may think or may say.

The point is for you and yours to enjoy the trip and if the ECV helps go for it.

As far as rooms, I agree leave them for those who truly need them.

All the best with your upcoming "little one" and enjoy your trip.

Be Big,
Alan

Unless you have complications with a normal pregnancy you shouldn't need an ECV at only 5 months. I was working in a hospital as a nurse much further along than 5mos and on my feet walking all day and I was 40. Disney would have been a piece of cake compared to that. 5 mos is about when you will be feeling your best and really won't be that big. I doubt your DR will blink an eye other than to tell you to drink enough, they want you to exercise. Go and have a great last childfree trip.

A rental ECV takes up less than six square feet. There is no problem parking them in any size room at WDW. You do not need an accessible room for the room size. And not that an accessible room will normally have either a roll-in shower or special tub with grab bars and othr modifications which are needed for a person who does not have normal or even decent mobility.

The accessible rooms are no bigger than the non-accessible rooms, so you won't need an accessible room.
Some of the accessible rooms have a raised seat toilet and a tub with grab bars. Those rooms are not arranged any differently than the other rooms/
There are also fully wheelchair accessible rooms that have a raised seat toilet, a roll in shower and roll under sinks that can be used while seated in a wheelchair. Those rooms are the same size, but are sometimes arranged a bit differently to accomodate a wheelchair.
That said, an SSR studio would be tight with 5 people.

As for the ECV, I think you should wait until closer to the time you are going and then talk to your doctor about it. I've had friends who continued to run thru their pregnancy - one ran a 10K race a few days before she went into labor. The big things that doctors are usually concerned about are not becoming dehydrated or over-heated (which you shoud watch for even if you do rent an ECV). Also, not suddenly becoming active if you have been very inactive.

If you do end up deciding you need an ECV, there is information about renting them on the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

Wow! Thank you everyone! I've never got such a response from my posts before....

I really appreciate all your help.

I would never take a room away from someone who truely needed it for mobility purposes. I'm glad to hear it will fit in my studio even on the upper floors which I prefer anyway.

It will just be the 3 of us in the studio, me, DH, and DD 4 1/2. It should be nice. My folks are at another resort, for numerous reasons.

It's nice to know the ecvs are available if I need them. I wouldn't even try to get them at the park, we are not early risers and I don't want to worry about availability or taking it away from someone else. I'm just in panic mode considering all the possibilities so my Dr. doesn't keep me home. Of course if I have some condition, it would be nice to know what my options are....

Does anyone know of any other boards or threads on pregnant tourists?

Thanks again!

No, you're not stopping there. Do tell! :)

Oh, you caught me! I rewrote that several times as it was!

First reason, I had planned the trip with just the 3 of us first. Then, we normally tell my parents and invite them to join us. We always go "dutch" financially, and separate ressies always help. At that point, my parents did book a room at the same resort as us hoping for adjoining rooms at POR.

Then, we bought into DVC and snuck in a May trip - enter in our precious "souvenier".

The whole time we thought we had paid for our October trip, until we came back from the May one, and had some time to organize and separate trip paperwork, etc.

Discovered we did not yet pay for the room, only the deposit.

Since we already had points just sitting there, and didn't want to put out any more cash or unneeded charges, we decided to switch as much of our POR trip to SSR.

So, now we will join them at POR for the last weekend of our trip, so we aren't paying the points for 2 weekends - just too much!

If you want anything juicier than that, you'll have to PM me:rolleyes1
