Pregnant diabetic with asthma needs your help!

Hi There! We are leaving for a two week trip in 4 weeks. I have been diabetic (type 2) for 5 years and haven't had a problem controlling levels before (using pills and diet). My DH and I decided no more children (already have a 7yr old ds) after lots of health problems, then had an oops last October. I'll be 20 weeks when we go.

I have always had problems with my asthma at the parks before, twice comming home only to be hospitalized for pneumonia.

My question: Is there anyone else out there who has done Disney pregnant with diabetes and asthma and how did you handle it?

I am concerned that I won't be able to walk the long distances (although I try to walk at the gym 3x per week, I've had complications and haven't done much lately). I'm afraid that somethig is going to trigger my asthma, which usually happens down there, and the meds I usually take are off limits now.

And I have also been on insulin and NPH injections since getting pregnant and I'm uncomfortable with doing my shots in a resaraunt (I think bathrooms are an icky place to inject! Too many germs!)

Anyone have any advice on how they have handled this? We have the DDP and I have made ADR's after checking out the menus, but I was hoping someone else might have had a similar situation. I've never done Disney like this before!

Thanks!

I would definitely recommend that you look into renting an ECV for your stay; riding rather than walking should help you immensely in terms of limiting shortness of breath/respiratory difficulties. I think you should plan for shorter stays at the parks, with an afternoon rest for you in your room. Your DH and son could go to the pool, arcade, putt-putt golf, etc while you rested, then you all could head out in the evening for more fun. Make sure you let your resort know that you have asthma to insure they place you in a non-smoking room. I think the key is realistic planning and flexibility depending on how you feel on a given day. Have a great trip.....

Your asthma specialist should be able to tell you what you need to do to stay symptom free during your trip. You should be on a maintenance program even though you are pregnant. I used albuteral as my rescue drug and pulmacort for maintenance.

I also think it would be wise to rent an ECV. Save your energy for playing in the pool with your 7 yo.

As far as insulin goes, the first aid stations may be very far from where you are eating. So, if you are using a fast acting insulin and then have to walk a half a mile to your restaurant, you might risk a low. You may want to ask a CM if there is a private spot to inject. I'd call the restaurant before you go.

Thanks for the tips! I am on pulmicort also as maintenance, but for some reason, when we go to Disney it flares up. I wasn't sure about renting the ECV - sounds silly but I know how rude people can be and didn't want to get any comments. I will seriously consider it though.

I'm on fast acting insulin and need to inject right before eating, so I'll talk to the people at the restaraunts. Thanks for your help everyone!

I'd second (or rather 'third') the suggestion to get an ECV. A lot of people on these boards recommend renting from an off site vendor, as the parks can run out and you'll be able to use an off site rental in your resort. If you're staying on Disney property, the buses are easy enough to navigate with mobility devices (I don't know about off site, as I've not tried them on wheels). For more information on ECV rental and Disney buses with mobility devices, see the FAQ: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=595713 (posts 2 and 4 respectively).
Any ride marked on the map and the sign outside with a red triangle is not recommended for pregnant women.

Have a great trip :goodvibes

We are staying at OKW. We rented a car for the trip as well, in case I wasn't feeling well and needed to leave somewhere quickly. I was also unsure of how crowded the busses were at that time of year and didn't want to have to stand up in a crowded bus. We usually go in January, but are now constrained by the school vacation times since my son is in 1st grade now. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I called to see what rides I couldn't go on. I figured while my DH and DS were on those, I would find a shady place to sit and take a break.
