Pregnant and nauseous...help!

I'd hate to say this but I was sick EVERY day when I was pregnant from the moment I found out from when I was in the OR!!!! I lost 60lbs and nothing helped I ate ALOT of bread and crackers!!! I was able to eat very little foods most foods madee me sick. Bread worked best and pasta!! Good luck I know how you feel it sucks I've been there not so long ago my baby is almost 9 monthes! Congratulations and good luck again!!!

I never had it superbad, but it was bad enough for a few weeks. I liked to nibble on candied ginger. It's in the spice section. It really worked. Also, waking up in the middle of the night to have a bowl of cereal with a banana. It seemed to help the next day.

Of course I would recommend stopping that habit once the nausea subsides. I ended up gaining almost 60 pounds!

ginger tea or ginger ale. Mint aroma therapy. Protein sometimes helps with nausea. The two times I was pregnant, I ate rare roast beef with horseradish a lot. It helped.

In nursing school they told us to give lemonade (made from real lemons and sugar) and potato chips for morning sickness. In small amounts. I cannot imagine that this would actually work, but well, maybe you could give it a whirl if you get desperate and let me knhow it goes. Something about the combination of sugar salt carbs. Common sense would dictate otherwise to me, but heck who knows>?

Real lemonade is a natural anti-nausea or so says my Gastroenterologist. It is one of the few things I can sip when I am nauseated. Works better than ginger ale. :thumbsup2

So glad to hear that! I thought it sounded bizarre! Any thoughts on the chips?lol

I don't have any advice on foods, but wanted to give you a tip on drinking water. During my pregnancies, I had to drink water through a straw or else I would get really nauseous. I've shared this tip with quite a few women who have found it really helpful. Hopefully it helps you or someone else too.

While traveling abroad a few years ago, I had a bout of nausea for a couple of days and the only things I could eat without feeling sick were ice cream & potato chips so maybe there is some truth to this theory?

Try a baked potato with just a tiny bit of butter on it if you need the butter. This was the first food I was given while in the hospital for hyperemeisis and it tasted sooo good. This was after they started me on IV Zofran. The pills didnt work for me. Once back at home I would often eat a baked potato. Weirdly enough stuffed shells also worked well. In a previous pregnancy the easiest thing for me to keep down was jello.

Looks like you're getting some good advice here TAZ.:)

CCF!!!
I was thinking of you the other day. Looks like Taz and I are meeting here on the DIS for coffee after the baby's born sometime late June, early July. You're welcome to join us.:goodvibes By then she should be asking how to get spit up stains off of your shoulders.:rotfl:

I skimmed through the replies and I don''t think that I saw this.... But I get pretty bad motion sickness and have used the "Sea Bands" they are made to be worn on the pressure points of your wrists and THEY WORKED for me when I felt nauseous. You can buy a pair of these at a drug store or someplace like Walmart or Target for like $8.00. They are made of material like a sweat band and they have a little round plastic piece about the size of a small gumball.
They also have lolli pops called prego pops that my husbands oncologist gave to hime when he was going through Chemotherapy. They seem to help with easing the nausea. Good luck to you and treasure every moment of the miracle that is growing inside of you. I have a 7 and 4 year old and LOVED being pregnant and the labor isn't bad at all either--- it is soo worth it. Enjoy your little Nemo .

I second the lemonade answer, that did help me a lot. One of my co-workers swear that green olives helped her (she said it was the salt), but I never tried it. I'm not fond of olives, pregnant or not.

Hmmm.... now that I think about it I did prefer salty foods when I was pregnant over sweet foods so maybe that was because it helped with nausea. I know when I have a stomach bug I have been told to I sip ginger ale and nibble on saltine crackers.

Lucky Taz! New baby AND getting to meet up with Jo. :)

Army sent us back down South but not to SC (1 state West) so at least we are closer to the Mouse but shockingly we miss the mid-Atlantic.

I lived on "Preggie Pops" for awhile during my second pregnancy. They were ginger flavored and some others as well. They really did the trick.

Looks like they have "drops" too.

Hope you feel better soon!

add: the astericks cover the word "three"....not sure why that happened.

The biggest thing that helped me during my first trimester with all 3 of my kids was a 1/4 of a unisom as suggested by my OB. It took the nausea away but it did make me tired. I took tired over sick everytime!!!! I took the pill and then ate a green apple. I felt so much better after I did that. I cannot look at a green apple even today but being pregnant it helped *and it helped with being sea sick on cruises as well*

Congrats on the pregnancy! I hope you feel better soon!

I understand that years ago there was a drug they routinely gave pregnant women for nausea and it was the same as unisom -but it was taken off the market for that purpose because of worries about birth defects.
I understand that many think the company was over cautious

I think there are very few drugs marketed for anyone pregnant -because of the liability

I haven't read all the replies, but a few of the things I tried that worked were eating a few gingersnap cookies BEFORE I even got out of the bed in the bed in the morning.

Then I had to each cheese toast every morning later in the pregnancy....and I mean before I did anything else every day

And EVERY single day until I delivered DD, I had to eat dry cheerios the entire time was driving across the bayway to get to and from work. I just kept a huge box in the car. i think the motion of the ocean (actually the bay) made me queasy, but the eating worked!

You ladies are fabulous! Thank you so much!

Of course talk to your doctor about this, but I took a B6/unisom combo at night. It helped the following day. I was also on zofran sporadically when I got really nauseous (usually at night a few hours before I could take the B6/unisom).

With my first I was able to do acupuncture which helped a lot, my insurance covered it then, it didn't for this pregnancy so I didn't do it this time.

Good luck and feel better! I had to stay on meds until almost 16 weeks with this little one.

Some of these were already posted, but worked for me:
drinking through a straw
Cheering - I kept a small bag with me at all times to nibble from

I don't think anyone mentioned frozen food, but I could get down frozen fruits and vegetables. They were thawed just enough to make them slushy. The frozen things have less smell and less taste, so it seemed like I could tolerate them better.
I also had a lot of jello. The texture of jello made me gag, but I prepared it and then scooped some into a cup and melted it in the microwave to drink.

My 2nd pregnancy I was on Tigan suppositories. A pain to do that to eat, but they did give enough relief to get a meal down.
