I was looking at a book that had pictures of Victorian times in it. It made me wonder, what will the country, and the world, be like in 100 years? Anybody venture to make guesses based on how things have changed in our times?
What do you think it will be like, In terms of :
Medicine
New technology
Education
Family life
Ages/lifespans
Politics/countries/wars
Style of clothing
Entertainment (movies tv music etc)
Social reform/new laws/changes in beliefs

One thing I predict in the technology area is no more electrical wires. I look at all the wire connections I have plugged in and it's a mess. I always say I hope I live long enough in the future when everything will be wireless.

Also gone will be the thick winter coats. They're already working on a material/fabric as thin as wetsuit that will be able to retain the person's own body heat.

I also predict no cash in 100 years. The actual paper money and metal coins will be replaced by debit cards.

Think of this...
Short term people always overestimate things
Long term people always underestimate things

For example one hundred years ago nobody could have predicted that the internet would be what it is today and that people would be walking around with powerful pocket sized computers(smartphone).

One hundred years from now I can only hope I am still around to see it.

It seems like our world has been more interesting in communications than anything. In 100 years, I can only assume that it will go further. I think that there will be something even better than a smartphone out there (not sure what else it'll do.. who knows), and flat screen TVs will be antiques. I wouldn't be surprised if television was broadcast in some form of a hologram.

I'd like to see transportation transform completely within my lifetime, but I don't even know if it'll change that much in 100 years unless our oil sources run out completely. I like the idea of green energy without the use of oil.. I like the idea of better public transportation, faster flights, and high speed rail more prominent in the United States.

Who knows what will happen though. While I can see technology improving the world, I could also see it being the downfall of mankind.

i honestly think the world will be over in 100 years...just my thoughts.

Really impossible to tell, the things we will be using haven't even been thought of. 30 years ago who could have predicted cell phones or the impact internet?
100 years ago people paid cash for their homes, today people take 30 years to pay for them.
Sadly, I'm pretty sure we still won't have a cure for cancer.

When you say the world might be over in 100 years, are you saying that because of religious reasons or are you saying it because of environmental issues or are you saying it because of extreme weapons/warfare? Just curious to know which way you mean.

Lol that was funny about Pluto!

I don't think anything will change. There will still be people dreaming about the good old days and others saying look how far we've come while we all seem to stand still, as one culture peaks another falls, on & on it goes.

I would like to visit outer space Disney though, I vote for Pluto too

Triple Stuff Oreo's - I hope it doesn't take 100 years for Nabisco to develop the technology to squeeze even more of that creamy goodness between their cookie ends.

Medicine... I think we'll have full body scans and blood tests at birth, for genetic dispositions to diseases as well as overall internal health. I do think we'll have a cure for cancer. I think we'll have affordable, safe x-ray technology that will be used for lots of things (I mean like full body scans that will be used commonly).

New technology - although it's not "new", I think holograms will be available for a lot of things (info at the mall, tv, movies, etc). Wireless everything. Ovens that cook for us when we're at work (that are refrigerators first, then turn to oven at a pre-set time). I think I've seen that already somewhere. Clothes washers will all be steam type. Maybe dishwashers too. Or the technology that cleans the toothbrushes now... I can't think of it... it's like a de-germer.

Education - this is hard. I see the homeschool movement (we homeschool) presently growing at a rapid rate. I see public school districts having no money... our local district was considering cutting out K. They took that idea off the table, but the fact it was even thought of was so surprising to me. BUT our district may go to 1/2 day K, (we've been full day K since before I was there, and I was in K there in 1973). I see teachers struggling and frustrated with the administration. I see learning styles being ignored in schools. I see us teaching things too early (ie - your baby can read - ugh!). I don't see us teaching kids how to think - just memorize facts. Not good. I hope we can learn to look around us and follow examples of more successful countries where education is concerned.

Family life - probably more spread out relatives than we have now, due to our world 'shrinking', transportation being easy. Probably close to the same otherwise.

Ages/lifespans - I think we're looking at things that are now shortening our lifespans (plastics - cancer, etc). Hopefully we'll figure out these things and our lifespans will again increase from the previous generations.

Politics/countries/wars - I hope we have a 3rd political party.

Clothing - it's gotten skimpier and skimpier - there's not much left to do. I'd assume fabrics will get 'better' (non wrinkle everything, lighter, warmer, thinner, etc).

that's all I can answer.

Good questions! Fun thread!

Medicine - I actually think we'll have HIV and Cancer solved within the next 20 years.. perhaps not every type of cancer, but a great majority of them.

As far as 100 years goes, I agree with a PP that said the world will be over. I agree with that. Not for any reasons specifically (religious or other) but just looking at the shape the world is in now along with the the recent uptrend in major disasters across the world. I know some people argue they are cyclical but I think something bigger is happening.

On top of the natural disasters that are happening, the global economy is in dire straights. There will be a global economic collapse probably within 30 years and life will really suck at that point.

I don't know.... I've recently read over and over that our generation (or maybe our kids) is the first generation on record to have a shorter predicted lifespan than the previous one. All the cancers, obesity and the multitude of problems that go along with that, the processed foods we eat, the pollution we live with, and on and on. There are probably a number of "articles" on both sides, but I'm sure I've read many times this is our current situation. BUT, I'm not a scientist, doctor, nor did I sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night ;):rotfl:

I'm hoping for a self cleaning house. Or maybe Rosie the Robot like on the Jetson. It would be nice not to have to do housework.
