Predator: Badlands

Oh boy. TWDC going back to the Alien cross-over again. I do enjoy Elle though. She's really talented, IMO.

The daytime shots of the Predator do not work for me. They don't hide the weaknesses with GGI and make-up. I am not a filmmaker but my understanding that good filmmakers (i.e. Cameron, Scott, McTiernan, etc.) will often film creatures in dark locations to help the CGI and costuming/makeup look better on film. It hides the shortcomings.

I did watch Prey recently since it was on the D+ free Hulu stuff section. It was actually really good - certianly th ebest Predator movei in a while! It gives me confidence that this one should be good.

Will this be the first Predator Film to ever break $200M is the question. Highest a Predator film has ever gotten is $160M

So how much background is necessary for this film?

Watched the first Predator... but then kind of fell out of interest in the franchise.

Meaning to do Prey, but have not got around to it.

Will just understanding the basic premise of what the Predators do be enough? Or is there an important film I am missing

I haven't seen it, but it seems to be set on a different planet in a differnt time, so I doubt any prior knowledge is too necessary. Prey was really good, but takes place in18th century America, so I doubt it ties in. Knowing that the PRedator species are hunters the look for the strongest possible challenge is probably enough.

that is kind of what I thought, that pretty much all of the Predators are just individuals of the same species that seem to exist to hunt other aliens without really any other connections between the various movies.

I am current on the Alien movies and latest streaming series Earth so I am familiar with Weyalnd/Yutani which I think is the other pertinent background

While it does seem that there is some Weyland-Yutani imagery in trailers for Badlands, that actually doesn't have much to do witht he Predator series outside of the Alien vs. Predator movies, which may or may not be canon. It does seem that 20th may be working on officially merging the two universes officially though. The AVP idea originated in comic books where tehy were doing a lot of "X vs. Y" in the 90's.

Really, though you are right - each Predator movies has a different Predator(s) and group of people and are only loosely connected by the idea that a Predator comes a-hunting. Actually, Dutch was supposed to make a cameo in Predator 2, but they couldn't get Arnold for such a small role, so they used another gneeric commando guy. Well, it's Gary Busey, so he's not generic, but he's not Dutch!
