Pre-trip disasters

We leave in 5 days...DH dropped a fire extinguisher on his foot this evening. He keeps trying to tell me "it's not broken..." as it swells larger and larger and turns every shade of purple known to man. "It doesn't hurt when I walk...only when I HAVE SHOES ON and walk."

He won't go to ER to have it x-rayed, and probably won't go to doc tomorrow either.

I'm sure in the grand scheme of pre-trip disasters I bet this is truly minor, but maybe if YOU guys share your pre-trip shenanigans with me it will make me feel better.

About a week before our last trip, our oldest was at a church youth group party. The host had a zip-line in the back yard. Long story short she smashed into a tree. When I picked her up, she was holding her arm and limping pretty badly.
Ortho urgent care clinic next morning. Ankle was fine, but arm was fractured.

Check and see if any of the orthopedic offices have a quick care or urgent care clinic. It's much faster, and less expensive, than the ER.

Hopefully nothing is broken and the swelling will be all gone before you leave!

My dad came down with a massive bout of gout before we left for Disney in 2000. I was 20 then, and didn't really get how much pain he was in. I have no idea how he made it through 7 nights at WDW. Then they stole his golf clubs at the Grand Floridian. Needless to say, he refuses to ever go back to WDW.

In January 1997, we were taking DD on her first trip to Disney. We lived in MA at the time. DH walked out our front door and fell on ice on the steps, while he was holding DD who was 15 months. Her first trip including a full leg cast :(

Hope your hubby's leg is better!

I think I'm similar to your husband...

10 days prior to our trip in June I had a basketball go off my hand bending my wrist straight back. Of course...I finished the game despite the pain :headache:. When I got home I was worried I'd broken it, I had broken it before in middle school so I was worried because it felt kind of similar. The next day I couldn't move it at all, it wasn't swollen that bad though...so that's a good sign right? I iced and soaked it and wrapped it for a few days. It happened mid-week so I told my wife if it wasn't better by Monday I'd go to the doctor. I kept saying all weekend - I AM NOT going to Disney World with a cast...we can get this fixed when we get back!

It started feeling a little better on Sunday so I just let it go. It was almost all better by the time we left. Us men and our refusal to go to the doctor, it's just the way some of us are wired ;).

Anyways - my expert diagnosis is that his foot will be fine! Seriously though...hopefully everything is ok and you're trip is awesome!

Not Disney, but we planned to go to Maui for our second anniversary. The night before our flight, my husband picked up some sort of bug...he had a high fever, was shivering, and vomiting. Me, being the awesome spouse that I am, told him that he better suck it up and get on the plane the next day because our vacation was not being ruined or cancelled because of a little virus.

Luckily, when he woke up the next morning he was fine and no one else got sick! We had a marvelous trip and came back with a great souvenir--she turns 7 next month. ;)

We are leaving in 4 days and 10 days ago I spilled my entire cup of coffee between my legs leaving 2nd and 3rd degree burns on my inner thighs. They are healing slowly but will not be comfortable in the September heat with my pants rubbing on them :(
I never knew how dangerous my morning cup of coffee was!!!

I feel your pain! I spilled a burning cup of tea when DD decided to use the restroom on our morning flight to WDW and knocked into my arm! Luckily the flight attendant brought me ice to apply immediately. What agony!

Holy moly. Turn that coffee pot's water heater down! I'm sure you've seen someone, given the 3rd degree burns...do they have any sort of bandages/compresses/compression clothing suggestions to protect you from, well, your clothing?

Jennasis, I totally understand the avoidance of the doctor, but he could get a walking boot which helps him not hurt while walking. There's really not a losing scenario with seeing someone.

The morning we drove down to disney world this past July, dd8 woke up....and puked. This was a 5 year trip planned and she was puking. We loaded her up with a trash can and hit the open road. She threw up once in the car, once at a gas station. After that she was good. We rested that night and the next day with no throwing up. I don't know what it was but I am glad it didn't last long. We had a great trip. She rode some great headliners too without anything coming up! ;)

Add me to the klutzy group. Years ago, I fell down the stairs about a week before our Mediterranean cruise. Fell right on my **** and continued to bumble down the entire flight of stairs. DH came running in from the other room to find me sprawled out in the front hall. I was okay, my lower back hurt for a bit and I was moving a bit slowly for a while, I was good to go.

We're going in 3 weeks and my daughter had a collision and landed wrong, with her knee hyper flexed and twisted, during a soccer game last Saturday. I was pretty sure she tore ligaments in her knee or tore her meniscus, as it was unstable, she couldn't bear weight, and she couldn't extend it without extreme pain. I really thought we were going to have to cancel our trip to Universal because those are surgical fixes, they won't heal on their own even on children.

The Saturday sports injury clinic at my place of work is only open until 11am, and it was 11:30, so that was out. We're a military family so we are supposed to be stuck with base medical care, but they don't have an ER on base, so we were stuck either going to urgent care or waiting until Monday. I braced her, iced it, and made her sit for two days with it elevated. Monday I sent her to school wrapped in co-ban and braced, with a note asking the PE teacher to excuse her from running and jumping. By yesterday the lateral sides of her knee are still a little sore, but she's got her range of motion back and isn't limping.

I hope the same works out for your husband OP.

Three days before our trip many years ago, I ruptured the disc in my back. I have a bad disc, and as I was putting the Brita carafe into the fridge that night, I felt a twinge and then I was ON THE FLOOR. Crawled upstairs and into bed! By departure morning, I was OK standing or laying down, but sitting was pretty bad. DH wasn't on this trip, so he loaded up the car. I found a comfortable position and drove (w/DD who was 6) to the airport and let the skycap handle the baggage. Met my Sis and BIL at MCO and he took care of the bags after that. Believe it or not, I think all the walking around Disney really helped my back!

We also had the trip when about 5 weeks prior to departure, DD broke her foot while sledding (I think that was the year after the issue with my back). She had a cast up to her knee. Timing as it was, they removed her cast on the morning of the day we headed to the airport. Good timing! She did need to use a wheelchair for a lot of our trip- WDW is just too much walking on a freshly healed fracture!

THEN there was the trip I got food poisoning while AT WDW… but that's another story for another day!

I was in kindergarten in 1994, and my parents and grandparents were taking me to disney for the first time. I was so excited, I could hardly wait!!

Well...the night before we were leaving, my back was itchy...and my stomach...and my arms...guess who just got the chicken pox??? YEP. Me. My mom was devastated, as was I! The doctor said to spend as much time in the pool b/c the chlorine would clear them up faster. It worked! We had to spend the first few days at the resort, but after that, I was ok enough to go to the parks :)

Flu going around and 6 people living in my basement had it. My whole family had flu shots except my husband. Thankfully he did not get it.

Then there was the winter storm that was messing with our drive. We pushed our departure earlier and earlier. Ended up leaving 2.5 days early so we could beat it.

These were potential disasters.

Then there was losing my wallet before my cruise. Ended up I left it at a hotel had at the airport. But oh my word!

A variation on a theme. I was surprising my husband with a Carribean getaway for his 40th. The plan was to tell him Sunday and depart Monday. Friday evening I was so excited, I was bouncing out of my skin. I had a glass of wine with colleagues to celebrate, then went home and gleefully played tag with our then-toddler. I guess I was too gleeful because I ran right into a doorframe. I looked down and my second toe was pointing in the wrong direction. This was no hairline fracture - my toe was broken clean across in two places. I was in a boot for three months and almost needed surgery. I spent our vacation hobbling around on crutches. Didn't spend too much time on the beach - the sand was too hard to navigate.

Well, he got dressed and left the house early this morning to go to the doctor. Maybe it hurts more than he's let on? Or maybe he saw this thread (Hi baby! I love you!!)...but I will rest easier knowing what's going on.

Say some prayers for him!

It was two hours until of flight left and we were just heading out the door to the airport. My wife asked our daughter to run upstairs and grab her hat from the bedroom. My daughter, in all her excitement, threw the hat down the stairs instead of carrying it. The hat bushed against a picture frame hanging on the wall down the stairs and sent the picture falling - straight onto my wife's head. It hit her hard and her head starting bleeding profusely. After a few minutes of ice and compresses I was able to take a look and realized she really needed stitches. But there's no way we'd get to the doctor and to the airport in time (even with our Canadian medical system) to catch our flight. Had all kinds of discussions about options: she'd fly down the next day (but tickets weren't refundable or changeable), postpone the trip for everyone, etc. However she insisted that if she could hold a cold compress on it for a few more minutes it would be okay - even if her hair was full of blood. So she washed as much of her hair as possible, and put together a discrete compress to hold on the way to the airport and while waiting to board.

Fortunately the bleeding stopped and we made it onto the plane on time.

However on the plane a flight attendant brushed up against her head while serving the drinks which caused the bleeding to start all over again. FA felt awful thinking she'd hit my wife hard enough to hurt her and cause the bleeding, but once we explained the situation they brought us more ice and we were able to get the bleeding to stop once and for all.

Phew....

I hope this makes you feel better :) I dropped a 45lb plate on the top of my foot at the gym two weeks before our Disney cruise. I did that in the morning and by the afternoon my foot was so swollen, very colorful and it hurt so bad to walk on it. I thought I broke it so I went to the ER for an X-ray. I only bruised the bone. I kept icing it and using ibuprofen and felt much better after a few days.
