Pre-booking character meets?

I'm sailing on the Dream in concierge in May and recently received this email from DCL. I wasn't sure if this is something new they started, but previously I thought that meet and greets were taken care of once you were on the ship. It now sounds like you can make requests through shore side concierge before boarding. Is this something new?

This is something new! We are on the Dream in May as well. I called shoreside to book our meet and greets for our sea day.
