My 2 yo nephew Luke is spending what looks like his last Christmas in the hospital. Luke has a rare genetic disorder called "mitochondrial disease". It affects every cell in his body and is most evident in his digestive system.
For most of his life, Luke has been in and out of the hospital. He has had numerous surgeries to treat the symptoms of his disease. There is no cure.
Monday, he went into Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh yet again. This time, he has the flu. His temperature was over 105 when he was admitted. He cannot be given Tylenol because his liver is in very poor shape and cannot metabolize it. They are doing the most that they can to keep his temperature down. Because of a low red cell count, he got transfusion last night.
He has been pretty much "out of it" since Monday. He is rarely awake and therefore, we assume that he is feeling no pain. While we all have been aware that Luke's time on earth would be brief, no one expected that this child who was happily playing and watching Sponge Bob last week would be so very ill this morning. It is especially hard on Christmas Day, to think that we may have seen the last of his "good" days.
If those of you who believe in a higher power would please take a brief moment and say a prayer for him, his parents, and his doctors, it would be most appreciated. We have seen the power of love and prayer at work and know that if God is willing, Luke will recover at least enough to smile for his Mommy & Daddy today.
Thank you to all.
