Hi Gang I have not been on in a while. But I just want to share with you all that on May 21st I will be going into the Hospital for A Colonoscopy. I need to do this because Cancer runs in my family. I lost A Great Aunt to cancer in 1997. A Uncle in 1996 and a Grandfather in 1990. Please send some prayers and Pixie Dust my way.

Thanks:goodvibes

FYI, I went through this last year.

The results were mostly good - it was a good thing they did it, as there were a couple of polyps that they dealt with right then...had I not had it, they could have eventually become cancerous. But the anticipation (and the preparation :( ) is worse than the procedure itself.

Good luck and pixiedust:

Sending prayers for you. My DH recently had one done too - his dad had cc (did not die from it). It turned out okay. Keep thinking positive!! Having the test and getting rid of polyps early is the best prevention!!!

I work in a colonoscopy unit as a nurse. Most people say the worse part of the test is the day before when you have to take the laxative. We use conscious sedation in our unit. Most people sleep through it and even if they get some cramps, they don't remember it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. It's important to get screened for colon cancer because if caught early, it's very treatable.

ps. I've had one done a couple of years ago, and I don't remember a thing about the test.

Same here...was asleep in about 30 seconds after getting in the exam room, and apparently didn't remember the doctor tell me how it went they made him come back a second time to tell me :)

I heard that the stuff You have to take is the worse part. Im glad my dad will alow me to stay with him that weekend. since the hospital is just up the street from where he lives. I thank my mom for pushing me to do this since Cancer runs in my Family

That's great. I hope you will post an update when it's all over. Maybe that will encourage others who have been putting off having it done to go for their colonoscopy.

I had it done 2 years ago...honestly,the prep before is the worst part. I don't remember a thing. I was very weak after and slept all day once I got home and had some real food. You will be ok...try not to worry about it...I know that's easier said than done. Prayers and PD headed yiour way.

How old are you? Is this a routine exam, or is there some suspicion of something?

I had my first at age fifty. As they all tell you, the prep... ugh!

The procedure, what procedure?
I remember nothing. My reaction - who stole an hour of my life?!?!?!! :scared1:
This was the first time I had been "knocked out" for a procedure and I found it very disconcerting.

Any way, you are doing the right thing. Best of luck with the hours before the procedure.

 for you, I've been through this twice in my life, and I'm sure that wasn't my last time, since I am at an increased risk for colon cancer due to having had endometrial cancer (all cured now, thank goodness).

As people have said, the prep is the worst thing about the whole process. But think of it this way - your insides will get a thorough cleaning, and some people pay big bucks to have similar treatments at fancy spas. :rotfl:

It was 10 years between my colonoscopies, and the prep process has greatly improved since the first time. Still, don't plan to leave the house (or get too far from the bathroom) once you start your prep. Follow the prep instructions and you'll be fine.

Good luck, and let us know the results.

I am sending you good thoughts, keep upbeat and try not to think to much about it.

It worked for me-went thru a scare a few months ago-spot on the lung. I try not to stress and took the attitude that it was something out of my control. It would have done my family no good with me stressing-wife knew-kids did not.

A friend of mine said I was burying my head in the sand-I was not-kept upbeat and things turned out fine.

A healthy attitude is so important in situations like this. Stay positive and try not to let it effect everyday living.

Good luck:flower3:

Same comments as prior posters. Prep stinks, as does the dehydration that comes with it. But, you will actually feel much better afterward, even if youre asymptomatic now.
I have one better. My last was about 3 years ago, and they removed a large polyp. I went about a year later and had an endoscopy for a possible ulcer. They found eroded esophagus (barrett's)..SOO..the next time I go (pending) Ill have to have the double double. BOTH procedures during the same visit. Isnt that a lovely picture?:rotfl2:

Arg, I'm sure you are nervous. My thoughts are with you!

Prep was the worst part for mine (did it about 6 weeks ago). Even that wasn't as bad as I made it in my mind.

My thoughts go out to you for the anticipation. That's definitely a tough part.

I am 41 soon to be 42 June 30th I have cancer run in my family. I lost My Great Aunt in 1997 and a Grandfather in 1991. I just want to make sure that I am doing well as a percaution

Good for you for taking this precaution. Take care and good thoughts for you!

My sister has had at least one, maybe two, since she has Crohn's disease.

She said she felt a little uncomfortable, but apart from that it was fine, and that's with an ulcerated colon!

Sending all my best!

My father was diagnosed with colon cancer close to three weeks ago. He is now in the hospital after having major surgery to remove his colon and reconstruct his insides. We are hoping it will allow him normal functioning (and no chemo --- still waiting on word about that) as the cancer was able to be removed. If he had had a colonoscopy earlier, it might have been found at an early stage. Good for you for taking the proper precautions. Stay positive!
